CALEA® and PowerDMS™ Introduce
Standards Printing Feature
We are pleased to announce that, after receiving feedback from CALEA® clients, a print feature has been added to PowerDMS™ for electronic standards manuals. This feature now allows a standard-by-standard printing option. The print button can be found on the blue bar title line of each standard.
CALEA® and PowerDMS™ embarked on an affinity-based partnership to offer CALEA® agencies seeking more robust electronic accreditation management an optional process that was more effective and efficient. Over the past year, we have streamlined the delivery of CALEA® Standards and the CALEA® Process and Program Guide. We have developed strategies to update the manuals with the latest versions immediately following approval by the Commission. And, we have ensured the applications are Web-based to provide the greatest accessibility by clients in a manner that supports policy integration.
In addition to these accomplishments, we have worked to ensure client agencies remain aware of the value and functionality of PowerDMS™. This has included online tutorials, conference training, specialized training for assessors, and the delivery of information by CALEA® and PowerDMS™ representatives at various PAC meetings. In short, resources have been applied to make certain CALEA® clients have access to the most contemporary solution for managing the CALEA® Accreditation process. The CALEA® and PowerDMS™ partnership has recognized great success and promises to deliver even more in the future.
CALEA® and PowerDMS™ are pleased to offer this new printing feature and we look forward to future upgrades that will certainly add further value to the accreditation process and its management. As we listen to clients, we will continue to make enhancements that demonstrate CALEA® is the Gold Standard for Public Safety Agencies and it has partnered with the leader in document management systems, PowerDMS™. |
IACP Seeking Feedback on New PREA Standards
In support of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), the U.S. Department of Justice has recently released standards of care for detainees in local lockups to help prevent, detect, and respond to sexual abuse in confinement.
The IACP is working to help law enforcement leaders with lockups to better understand the PREA standards. Agencies with lockups or holding cells (even just one holding cell) are encouraged to visit the Elimination of Sexual Abuse in Confinement Initiative webpage (www.theiacp.org/PREA) to learn more about the standards.
They are also seeking feedback on local law enforcement's current efforts to eliminate sexual abuse in confinement and how IACP can best support them as they consider voluntary compliance with these standards: to participate in a brief needs assessment survey, click here or visit www.surveymonkey.com/s/IACPPREA. For additional information, contact IACP Program Manager Dianne Beer-Maxwell (Maxwell@theiacp.org). |
CALEA® Sample Policy Library
Requests for Contributions Being Made
CALEA staff is working on the development of an online library of SAMPLE policies for all the CALEA Accreditation Programs. This library will be available to all clients as a resource for shaping or creating directives that satisfy CALEA Accreditation requirements. The policies are to be regarded as a sample or one example; they are not to be considered MODEL policies and do not ensure standards compliance.
In order to populate the library with policies that complement the standards, staff will be contacting agencies that have recently been awarded accreditation asking them to submit specific policies. Contact will occur through a web-based application linked to calea@calea.org. The goal is to gather these policy resources for every standard in each program. Clients are asked to respond as promptly as possible when requested for a sample. This will allow us to launch this valuable resource as soon as a significant number of policies have been collected.
More information on the new resource will be provided as the library evolves. Contact your CALEA Regional Program Manager with questions. |

Program Manager's Corner
Security of Property Used for Training Purposes
CALEA's Standards for Law Enforcement Agencies, Chapter 84, requires the property and evidence control function custody to provide for the security and control of seized, recovered, and evidentiary property as well as abandoned, lost, or found property in the of the agency. This is critically important in supporting investigations, in helping to guarantee successful prosecution at criminal/civil trials, in facilitating the timely return of property to its rightful owners, and in establishing the agency's reputation as an honest, reputable agency worthy of the public's confidence and trust.
To this end, it is critical that agencies develop and maintain strict measures for the receipt, handling, security, and disposition of property. This includes controlled substances, weapons, and other items the agency uses for training purposes, which are often illegal to possess. The most common example is narcotics used by canine handlers for the purpose of training drug detection in field situations. Read more. |
