Professionalism, stewardship, integrity, diversity, independence, continuous improvement, objectivity, credibility, consistency, knowledge, experience, accountability, and collaboration are the primary cornerstones that distinguishes CALEA from all other forms of public safety accreditation. |

The Value of Serving as a CALEA® Assessor
The role of CALEA® Assessor has always been recognized as a critical component within the broader CALEA Accreditation process. It has long been said that assessors serve as the "eyes and ears" for the Commission; but even more importantly, they serve as the framework through which many of the new processes and programs have been built. In short, the CALEA Assessor assumes tremendous responsibility and the work of these individuals ensures the accreditation model is successful and provides a return on investment for participating agencies. Reminder for Recognition Agencies
In 2010, CALEA elected to dissolve the CALEA® Recognition and the CALEA® Recognition Through Alliance Programs, and transition to a tiered law enforcement accreditation program concept. The new programming has been tremendously successful and has brought new options for agencies seeking to participate in CALEA® Accreditation.
Despite the obvious benefits of the new programming, CALEA clearly wants to ensure it supports agencies enrolled in CALEA Recognition and Recognition Through Alliance as the transition occurs. A timeline has been established for agencies seeking the initial Recognition award and those already awarded. It is critically important that affected agencies' personnel remain aware of the following:
- Law enforcement agencies enrolled in the CALEA Recognition Program must have their initial on-site assessment by the end of 2012. These agencies must also be presented for their initial award no later than the March 2013 CALEA Conference in Charleston, South Carolina.
- Law enforcement agencies enrolled in CALEA's Recognition Programs must have any Re-Recognition on-site assessment by the end of 2013. They must also be presented for final Recognition award status review no later than the March 2014 CALEA Conference in Garden Grove, California.
These timelines apply to agencies enrolled in both the CALEA Recognition and Recognition Through Alliance Programs. Those having questions about assessment and award dates or program requirements should contact their Regional Program Managers for assistance.
CALEA looks forward to working with law enforcement agencies as they transition to CALEA Accreditation. CALEA is the Gold Standard for Public Safety Agencies and we are prepared to assist in any way possible. |
CALEA Participates in National Officer Safety and Wellness Group
In 2011, the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) and the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) announced the formation of the national Officer Safety and Wellness (OSW) Group. The OSW Group brought together law enforcement leaders, criminal justice practitioners, researchers and others with subject matter expertise to examine issues impacting officer safety and wellness in the United States. CALEA was asked to participate in this group because of its responsibilities regarding the management of best practice standards within the field of public safety. More |

Program Manager's
Corner
This month's PM Corner serves as a reminder of available resources and recent changes to the CALEA® Accreditation programs.
Agencies that do not use CACE software must go to the CALEA website to access the data tables that are submitted to the assessment team during the assessment process. The Assessment Tables page can be found under the Clients tab, Forms and Documents. You must login to access this section. If you use CACE you have the option of completing the tables in CACE, or using the link to access the tables.
The tables found on the website are presented in the form of Excel workbooks with multiple pages that include the appropriate formulas for accurate calculations.
As an additional note, the time is approaching for the conclusion of available online Change Notices for all hard copy manuals. If the Commission issues changes to any publication during the Scottsdale, Arizona conference in July, the associated change notice will be the final post to the CALEA website. Clients are encouraged to make the transition now to the CALEA Electronic Publications applications, created by PowerDMS™ and become familiar with navigating the electronic manuals. Each client agency is required to sign an electronic access agreement and pay for the manual to receive access. If you are unsure if your agency has signed the agreement and/or paid the fee, please contact your program manager. The agreement can be accessed on the CALEA website under the My CALEA Store, CALEA Manuals page. When accessing the link scroll to the bottom of the page to download the agreement.
Finally, during the March 2012 Conference in Mobile, the Commission approved the removal of standard 53.1.1 from the CALEA® Law Enforcement Accreditation process, but the standard is still a part of the CALEA Advanced Law Enforcement Accreditation program. If you are unsure which level of award your agency participates, please contact your program manager for guidance.
As always, feel free to contact CALEA staff with any questions or concerns. Each edition of the CALEA E-Communique includes a link on the right vertical banner for suggestions and other feedback. We welcome your comments and want to ensure our process continues to complement the needs of today's public safety agencies. |
