TV Show to Feature the Best Law Enforcement Agencies in Community Policing
Film Garden Entertainment, a highly respected television production company, is seeking police agencies interested in being a part of a new television show, currently in the development stage. This new show is titled "Undercover Citizen", and will center on agencies and their community policing programs using citizens to help them in their crime fighting efforts around the country.
Retired Chief of Police, Jim Murray, the Creator of the show, is working as a consultant and law enforcement specialist for this production. Chief Murray was a long time Chief of Police of CALEA accredited agency and has also been awarded the Egon Bittner Award from CALEA.
Currently, Film Garden Entertainment is seeking agencies to submit their interest to being included in future consideration for this show by submitting an email to that effect to Jim Murray, jvm111@verizon.net. You can also contact Mr. Murray at 828-837-3623, if you have additional questions.
This is a unique opportunity for agencies to showcase how they are fighting crime though "Community Policing", on national TV. Because there are productions dates, please submit your interest as soon as possible. |

Program Managers' Corner This is the sixteenth in a series of short articles from your CALEA Program Managers.
Team Leaders and Technology: Strategies to Control Costs
Over the past several years CALEA has mailed flash drives to Team Leaders prior to on-site assessments. These devices have been used as a medium for saving electronic documents associated with assessment activities. The process has served the Commission well and has been much more cost effective than mailing reams of paper to the CALEA Offices for archiving. In fact, CALEA has built on this opportunity and has now reduced office and administrative costs by transitioning to a paperless archive system. This makes for more seamless redistribution of documents and controls photocopying and mailing costs. Furthermore, electronic versions of assessment reports are being used by many Commissioners during their review of agencies for accreditation/recognition. This has also been an operational savings that continues to result in overall lower costs for client agencies.
Since the introduction of flash drive technology, the cost of these devices has fallen significantly. In fact, when conducting an online search for pricing you can quickly find 2 GB USB flash drives for less than $9, and devices with less memory are even less expensive. As a result, effective October 1, 2010, CALEA is authorizing Team Leaders to purchase a flash drive for each assessment they conduct. A receipt for this purchase should be attached to the Assessor Expense Report and captured in the miscellaneous section for reimbursement purposes. Team Leaders should not purchase flash drives with more than 4 GB of memory and should attempt to purchase devices with less memory when available. CALEA has historically distributed devices with 256K of memory, which has been sufficient for saving documents related to assessment activities. Ideally, these purchases should not exceed $10 - $12 as a guideline and Team Leaders should practice good stewardship when making these selections. Team Leaders should discuss questions concerning this administrative change with Program Managers when they are assigned to conduct assessments.
To further capitalize on this strategy, CALEA will redistribute collected flash drives to Team Leaders during conferences and other meetings. The reissuance of these devices will also work as a cost control strategy and prevent any resources from being wasted. To that end, the entire concept will contribute to more environmentally friendly office operations.
CALEA staff will continue to strive to control costs for client agencies and review our administrative processes to ensure we are working smartly. We are also open to new ideas, so please feel free to contact your program manager or other members of CALEA Staff if you have suggestions regarding process improvement opportunities. |

ATTENTION CALEA ASSESSOR
If you have not completed and sent to CALEA your Conflict of Interest Form, please do so at your earliest convenience. The CALEA Assessor Conflict of Interest Policy was developed by CALEA for all assessors and team leaders. It should be noted a similar policy was developed last year for selected staff and all Commissioners. This new policy provides general guidance on conflict of interest issues and establishes a reporting requirement for active CALEA assessors.
The policy can be found by assessors in the CALEA Assessor Forum (www.calea.org/Online/Assessor/assessors.htm), under the News Section. After reviewing the policy, please complete the Assessor Conflict of Interest Form and return it to Ms. Peg Giglio electronically at pgiglio@calea.org or by U.S. Mail to:
CALEA 10302 Eaton Place, Suite 100 Fairfax, VA 22030 or Fax to: 703.591.2206
As always, the Commission appreciates your service within the accreditation process and looks forward to working with you in the future. If after reviewing the policy you have any questions, please feel free to contact any of the CALEA Program Managers for additional guidance. |

ATTENTION CALEA CLIENTS
CALEA has been actively involved in a strategic planning process that has resulted in several new initiatives. These initiatives will likely have direct impacts on future training for assessors and team leaders. Subsequently, the new assessor and team leader training classes have been suspended until the special projects are completed. This will reduce any retraining that may be necessary as a result of the strategic initiatives CALEA is currently undertaking. We anticipate new assessor and team leader training to resume in 2011.
For additional information regarding this issue, please contact CALEA Deputy Director Craig Hartley. |

Message to CALEA Client Personnel In early 2010, CALEA Staff began using a new software package called Accreditation Management System (AMS). AMS is a very innovative, intuitive, and robust system that assists CALEA with the management of the accreditation process and provides staff the ability to correspond with client personnel electronically from within the program. The items transmitted include requirements and documentations for upcoming on-site assessments, annual report reminders, and assessor reports and forms. All messages from AMS are sent from the email address of calea@calea.org. Because of the potential that you or someone from your agency will receive messages from us in the future, please check your computer and network settings to ensure that our mail address (also our domain name: @calea.org) is not deleted or filtered into a "junk" or "bulk" folder. If you are unsure of how to view or adjust your email control settings, please contact your network administrator for assistance. Thank you for the continued support of the Commission. |
