Spring Trends

Even when the weather is not exactly spring-like, your wardrobe can still look springy.  Perk up your closet and the weather with these refreshing trends.  Happy spring!

1. Floral printed skirts - Pick a skirt with splashes of flowers then grab a color fresh from the skirt's color palette for an ensemble that will carry you from baby shower to graduation party.  Add a necklace that picks up the colors of the skirt.

2. All over eyelet - Eyelet is smart and always a summertime favorite.  Especially in white, eyelet looks and feels cool.

3. Wedge sandals - Wedge soles give you height and elongate your legs.  And who wouldn't want longer legs?.  Wedges with cork or woven straws are fun.  Cork is lightweight so kick up your heels in style!

4. Barely neutral - Buff, blush, muted pink - whatever you call it - consider it beige with a hint of peach or pink.  The colors look soft like the blush of your first love - all rosy on your cheeks.  These new neutrals are feminine and flattering.

5. Nautical stripes - Navy and white are forever friends in stripes shown in traditional boatneck tops, jackets and cardigans like this  navy & white striped sweater from Target.

What's in YOUR closet?
The Empire has ruled.

With many of the fashionable tops and dresses styled with an Empire waistline, it is critically important that this style line fall on the correct part of your body.  A Empire silhouette is styled with the bodice (top part of dress) gathered into the seam under the bust and then falls into a flowy dress (silhouette named after the late 18th century Empire period).  Empire waistlines can be very flattering as they can lengthen the figure, enhance a small bustline or camouflage a midsection.  An empire waistline can be a straight across seam or an upside down V like the one shown below.

Too often I see the empire seamline sitting on top of the bust or cutting through the full part of the bust.  This draws attention to the breasts which is unattractive especially on full busted women.  If the seamline doesn't stay put directly under the bustline, then pass on the garment.  To avoid the maternity look, make sure the fabric skims along the body without too many gathers under the bustline as excess fabric will have people guessing, "Is she or isn't she?"  An Empire waistline can be found on dresses or tops.
