We hope all of you enjoyed a meaningful Yom Kippur experience yesterday. In preparation for this spiritual holy day on the Jewish calendar, our students participated in a variety of activities.
Kindergarten through second grade students came together to listened to Ms. Bat Sarah chant the beginning of Kol Nidrei and discussed how music creates a particular tone and mood. Ms. Feldman read the story of Jonah and talked with the children about how it is important to do things that are difficult; we cannot only do the "easy stuff". When asked to take on a challenge we need to try our best, not run away out of fear. The children also heard for the last time this year the shofar blown with a very long tekiah g'dolah.
Third through fifth graders participated in the mitzvah of tashlikh, by writing down on paper things they did this year that they thought were not good; things they wished they had not said. Traditionally tashlikh is preformed alongside a moving body of water with the "casting off of our misdeeds." These notes were cast off into the office shredder. They also enjoyed listening to the story, Taslikh at the Rock.
The Book of Jonah, traditionally read on Yom Kippur afternoon, was reenacted in a dramatic play that our middle school students performed. Afterward, a discussion ensued that examined what the story tells us about our ability to flee from our conscience. They also explored through a text study why the story typically tells of a whale while the actual biblical verse says that it was a fish.
Next Friday we will share with you the Holiday Happenings experienced by Weizmann students in celebration of Sukkot. What a festive time we are enjoying!

I would like to enlist a few parents to help on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 1:00-2:15 when Kindergarten and 1st graders will be participating in a Sukkot program. The children will move through two activities, one of which is the garden. I have about 40 little plants, and many seeds, given by Muir High School's Ranch. Two or three people total would be great! Thank you!

Dear Weizmann School Community
|
I want to thank you for the overwhelming number of offers and opportunities that have been given to us from the community from our science minded friends and family to our middle school. The reply has been nothing short of humbling and moving. It is such a wonderful feeling to come home to a email box full of incredible offers, things that WDS science has never seen or done and it is because of you and your dedication to this school, to our students, to our curriculum, and to our learning. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. The response has been so thoughtful, generous, and kind. But this is only the beginning, so if you think you know someone who is involved in science in anyway, please let me know. I promise you, no offer or opportunity to learn from you or someone you know is too small. If you have an idea, please come talk to me. We want the students to see all aspects of science, from biological to chemical to physical to mechanical etc. If you think it relates, it probably does, and we want to hear about it, and have you come take our science classes to a whole new level of amazing. Let's continue to drive our science program to be extraordinary. You can reach me at amarks@weizmann.net. I hope this new year is one full of health, happiness, love, and laughter for you and your family. Kol Tuv, Albert Marks 5th-8th Science |
