APRIL 2012

Letter from the Chair of the Board of Trustees

Lori Rudd, Board Chair

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Each day at Foxborough Regional Charter School, we aspire to our personal best and demonstrate to others that we are proud of our school!  On the trails of our new wing opening and looking forward to celebrating our 15th year starting in the fall, the school leadership has examined the core beliefs that exemplify school pride and revisited how we can work together to strengthen them to continue to grow and build our sense of community.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees I am pleased to support the school leadership with the approval of the new dress code. The Board supports this effort to enhance our dress code and make it easier for parents!

While the colors of the revised dress code policy will remain unchanged, the styles will be defined more clearly and the falcon logo clothing will be provided through a school vendor at a cost comparable or better than retail stores! In addition to providing highly competitive pricing, the school plan is to create a convenient one stop purchasing process including online, in person, and mail order options to support your shopping needs.

Enjoy your month and thank you for your continued support!

Dear Families,

Announcing 2012-2013 Transportation Registration - Tuesday, May 1, 2012, 6:00pm Sharp.

For more than four years, FRCS was fortunate to participate in a Federal Voluntary Public School Choice Grant.  This enabled the school to create and run a regional bus program to facilitate access to the school.  The grant funding made it possible to offer regional transportation, provide late buses, and keep ridership fees low. It is the intent of the school to continue transportation services. However, this is the last year of the grant funding and we are faced with a challenging situation for the fall.

In a recent parent survey, results showed that an unavoidable increase in fees would be feasible for most families and that their interest in, and commitment to the school would remain strong.

In light of this information, the Board of Trustees has approved the school to move forward with transportation registration this spring for the 2012-2013 school year. As the Board develops the budget, we will determine how many buses will be affordable.

At the same time, the school will register families on a first come first served basis. All applications will be date stamped and routes will be designed once the Board has granted final approval for number of buses. Fees will be $1,200 per family and will be due in four payments.

Although we would like to offer transportation to all students, please know that seats are limited by capacity laws and demand. A seat on the bus this year will not guarantee a seat on the bus next year. All seats will be first come first served.

In preparation for Registration, please download and review the 2012-2013 Transportation Program information.

Enjoy your weekend!

Updates from the Executive Director
Mark Logan, Executive Director

Mark

Dear Families,

Last night, we welcomed Eva Paddock, a Jewish Holocaust survivor, who had an amazing story to tell. We were so fortunate to hear from someone whose direct experiences are often only read about in the history books.  This event served as an opportunity for us to better understand and appreciate the profound impact the Holocaust has had on the world both past and present. This lesson is connected to Mrs. Sheer's 5th grade CSL Holocaust Stamps Project, in which students are learning the importance of respectful behavior, including acceptance, tolerance and diversity. It is important to remember that embracing the differences among others in our society enriches our own existence.  Along with our FRCS core values, this project demonstrates one way that our students learn that tolerance is respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world's cultures and forms of expression.  Thank you Mrs. Sheer for bringing this enriching experience to our school community!

What another GREAT MCAS Prep Rally at FRCS!  Last month, just prior to our students taking English Language Arts MCAS exams, we held our traditional academic rally.  Thank you to Ms. O'Callahan, Mr. Aronian, and Mr. Shaw for coordinating such an incredible event.   This year, they created challenging obstacles in our new gym, so students could participate in a number of ELA, Math and Science competitions!  We were also extremely fortunate to be joined by New England Patriot cornerback Rasi-I Dowling who shared with our students the preparation tips that have helped him perform at high levels.  Lastly, thank you to Mrs. Sepe, who helped get the gym rocking as our Falcon mascot!  Please click here for a brief video, courtesy of the New England Patriots.

This in from Mr. Griffin, our Director of Teaching and Learning:

"I'd like to recognize some brilliant pedagogy displayed by Christine Davidson this week! Christine teaches a 9th grade math course designed to close some significant mathematics skills gaps. Her students have traditionally considered themselves "bad at math". Christine has turned that attitude on its head this year through some incredible work, an illustration of which occurred this week. Christine's students became 'student teachers' in preparation for their exams. As a class, they broke down the course into composite skills and self-identified peers who consider themselves 'master teachers' of each skill. Through a carousel model, students with difficultly in a given skill visited the master teachers for a lesson and practice on that skill and vice versa! The planning behind the instructional strategy was terrific and the result was highly engaged, student focused learning, with the instructor serving as a facilitator! It was a brilliant example of what we can accomplish at FRCS!"

Thank you, Mr. Griffin, for sharing, and thank you Mrs. Davidson for your commitment to our students!  We have amazing faculty and staff!

On a similar note, I am excited to announce that one of our all-star teachers, Linda Morse, has been named as the new editor of the New England Journal of History, a publication distributed to members of the New England History Teachers Association.  "Founded in 1897, the nation's oldest association of teachers of history and social studies welcomes to its membership all persons interested in the field of education.  The NEHTA is a founding member of the National Council for the Social Studies and remains its senior affiliate.  The Journal is beginning its 8th decade, is published twice annually and offers historical research, reviews and methodological articles."  Congratulations, Mrs. Morse!

I am also pleased to announce Foxborough Regional Charter School has been chosen as the recipient of the 2012 Green Difference Award!

Green Schools, a non-profit, charitable organization, recognizes outstanding GREEN work being done in our schools and communities.  Their mission is to create greener and healthier learning environments through education and awareness.  The Green Difference Awards recognize significant contributions to environmental education made by students, teachers, leaders, activists, and communities.

Download and view our nomination which highlights the tremendous work we do here at FRCS.  On May 4, 2012, I will lead several students to the State House to accept this award on behalf of our school.

At last month's Board meeting, the trustees approved the 2012-2013 school year calendar.  Continuing with our past practice, we will begin school on the Tuesday immediately following Labor Day.  For the upcoming year, this will be September 6, 2012.  Please click here for a list of other key dates.

Finally, next week we will hold a special Spirit Day on April 13th.  Jake and Josie McNeill will serve as Directors of the Day, seizing control of school operations.  They have elected to have a special non-dress code day for all staff and students.  Given April 13th is also the home opening day for the Boston Red Sox, this special Spirit Day will have a Red Sox theme with all donations going to benefit the Jimmy Fund.  I look forward to my day off :-) and I thank Jake and Josie for choosing such a meaningful charity for their first decision.

Sincerely,

Mark Logan, Ph.D.

News and Updates

Science Fair News!

Congratulations to Hason Khan who is officially registered in the State Science Fair being held at MIT on May 4th!  His project, titled The Efficiency of Helicopter Propellers in Various Attitudes, earned a first place finish at our local fair and a Science Forum citation in the Regional Science Fair.  A special thank you to Roy Pavao and Sue Kraus for their part in coordinating the HS and MS Science Fairs, respectively.

April is College Month at FRCS!

Promoting conversation about college is an important way for students to set academic goals and plan for educaiton beyond high school.  Each year in April we have a number of events that support college awareness.  On Wednesays, K-12 staff will wear their college shirts or sweatshirts.  Juniors are assigned three interviews with staff about their college search and experiences.   College conversations will take place in classrooms all over the school. On April 10th, a group of students will visit Bridgewater State University in the first of a series of trips to local colleges this spring.  In Achievement Teams for 9th and 10th grade, lessons in April will focus on visiting a College Fair.  Sophomores and Juniors will go to the National College Fair in Boston on May 3rd.  Finally, 8th grade has begun a five lesson seminar on early college planning with Mrs. Malfa and Mr. Elsner that will include an overview of college types, exploration, preparation, and admissions.  Students will also complete a four year high school course plan.  If you'd like to support our "College Conversation" in April - wear a college shirt when you come to the school, get a college brochure from the Guidance Office and look it over at home, or take a drive or tour through a local college this spring.  Seeing is Believing!

Advanced Placement Exams

Advanced Placement courses are our most difficult classes, typically requiring 10-12 hours of work outside of school each week.  These are college level courses and are open to juniors and seniors.  This past Saturday morning, AP teachers and students came to school for practice examinations.  Students who do well on the AP exams in May can earn college credits.   Good luck to all our AP students and a thank you to our AP teachers for their support!
