March 2012

Letter from the Chair of the Board of Trustees
Lori Rudd, Board Chair

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It is my distinct pleasure to recognize and commend our Executive Director, Mark Logan, for earning his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Lesley University.

One of the cornerstones of our school is to teach and promote life-long learning for both students and faculty.  As the chair of the Board of Trustees, I am extremely pleased to see our school leader demonstrate a commitment to his own professional learning and for setting a positive example for our entire school community.

During the past several years, Dr. Logan was heavily engaged in coursework and research, leading to his own comprehensive study.  His dissertation, Creating a Learning Environment to Increase Early Adolescent Motivation, examined student and teacher perceptions that impact student engagement and learning; identified influential factors that support and impede motivation and engagement; analyzed the relationship among these factors, current research on cognitive neuroscience, and early adolescent brain development; and made recommendations for school districts to improve the learning environment for all students. This past November, he publicly presented and defended his research.   Please click here to read the abstract of the study.

I would also like to take this moment to applaud Dr. Logan for achieving this honor, while at the same time maintaining a focus on strengthening the academic, social, and emotional programs at our school, overseeing our facility expansion project, and for constantly striving to make FRCS the best school it can be.  We are fortunate to have him leading the way.  Congratulations, Dr. Logan!

Enjoy your month and thank you for your continued support!

Lori Rudd

Dear Families,

This month, I want to inform you about some changes that may happen to Foxborough Regional Charter School's regional bus program.  Regional bus service is vital to our families and to our school.  It supports families in exercising their right to school choice.  It allows FRCS to be a truly regional K-12 community.  It provides safe, reliable transportation to 46% of FRCS families.  It reduces the number of cars coming and going from our campus in the morning and afternoon.

For more than four years, FRCS was fortunate to participate in a Federal Voluntary Public School Choice Grant.  This enabled the school to create and run a regional bus program.  Grant funding made it possible to add buses where our families live, add late buses so students can stay for after-school activities, and still keep ridership fees at $80 per month per family. We recently sent a survey to FRCS families whose children ride the buses now and families who are on the bus service waitlist.  The survey had two purposes: to present different options and to gather information from families about ability and willingness to pay increased ridership fees.  The survey results will influence 2012-2013 bus routes, numbers of buses offered, and where bus stops will be located.

Regional bus transportation to and from Foxborough Regional Charter School will continue, even though this is the last year of the multi-year Federal grant.  The program is expensive, but it is essential.  We expect ridership fees will increase in 2012-2013. We also expect some changes in bus routes and bus stops. We are studying alternatives to keep costs low and meet the needs of as many riders as possible.

We will keep you posted as we move forward.  Please watch our website and weekly Friday Folder for updates.  As always, if you have questions or comments about other aspects of the transportation program, please don't hesitate to contact transportation@foxboroughrcs.org.

By mid-March 2012 we will share the results of the survey with the whole FRCS community.  Any proposed increases in transportation fees will also be made public at that time.  Once fee schedules and the school budget are finalized, which should be in late spring, online registration will take place for 2012-2013 transportation.

Enjoy your weekend!

Updates from the Executive Director
Mark Logan, Executive Director

Mark

Dear Families,

February was a busy month! We held our second annual high school science fair, as well as kicked off our inaugural middle school science fair. The quality of the students' research, analysis, and findings were highly impressive. Congratulations to Brianna Sheehan and Hason Khan who tied for first prize in the high school and to Nora Kingman for winning the middle school fair. Please check out the following links for a list of all participants and award winners - middle school and high school. Thank you to Mr. Yates-Berg, Mr. Pavao, and Ms. Kraus for their tremendous leadership in making these events so successful.

One of our fourth grade traditions during the month of February is our African American Wax Museum project. Each student selects an influential African American figure who has served as an inspiration and had a positive impact on our society. Students research the life of their historical figure, produce a meaningful biography, and dress and perform their part as if they were wax figures in a museum. This year's fourth grade presentations were exceptional. Congratulations to our 4th grade students and teachers, Ms. Gimler, Mr. Keaney, Mr. Texeira, and Ms. West-Smith, on a job well done!

This week, I was honored to lead students and staff to the State House in Boston to meet with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Robert DeLeo. It was a tremendous honor to showcase our school accomplishments, such as our Spanish language program, service and leadership best practices, and other high levels of achievement, to such an influential leader. We were also fortunate to meet with FRCS friend, State Representative Jay Barrows. In addition to meeting with our elected officials, the day included an education into the legislative and public policy process and a tour of our state capital building. Of course, our students represented our school with the utmost professionalism and respect!

Today, March 2nd, we are kicking off our annual Art Show from 3:30 to 5:30 at Option Realty on West Street in Mansfield. The opening reception will highlight a month-long display of several exceptional works by our middle and high school students. As you may recall, many of our students demonstrate their talents throughout the year and consistently win awards in a variety of competitions. If you are unable to attend today's event, please contact our off-site "studio" at Option Realty for viewing times.

As a reminder, the school will continue its commitment to supporting exceptional teachers with a full day of staff development on Friday, March 9, 2012. Continuous and focused professional development is critical to help all students achieve to their potential. We take our role in providing the most qualified and professional staff seriously, as we coordinate a thoughtful and comprehensive annual plan. Training occurs throughout the year, including during the summer months, at our week-long orientation for all staff, through monthly meetings held during school hours and through after school initiatives.   As a result of this staff development day, there will be no student attendance on Friday, March 9th.

Finally, March not only brings spring, it also launches the standardized testing season. Over the next four months, students in various grades will take MCAS, SATs, PSATs, and/or AP exams. First up: English Language Arts MCAS later this month. Please click for the testing schedule, including some important tips to help prepare your children at home.

Sincerely,

Mark Logan, Ph.D.
