A Closer Look...

Behind-the-Gift

adoptafamily donor 2010

In the last two weeks of December, MOMS was abuzz with volunteers, babies, staff, and of course, our community "angels" dropping off gifts full of smiles and holiday spirit.  Oftentimes, we don't get a chance to hear the "behind-the-gifts" story of our donors and their efforts.  This month, we're very excited to share a personal anecdote from Sandy Sorenson from the Manufacturing Team at The Disneyland Resort.

Once upon a time in one of our morning meetings, I mentioned it was time for our Adopt-A-Family Holiday drive and Manager, Gale Maxey of our Animation/Figure Finishing Department, suggested we put on a fundraiser. He also suggested cooking chili dogs along with a bag of chips and a soda for $5.  We have done fundraisers before, so we're kind of experienced!  We decided on a sunny Wednesday.(continue reading)

MOMS Orange County is pleased to be one of the first Orange County non-profits to partner with GroundWork group, an expert nonprofit IT provider.

Launched in 2005, GroundWork group is an Ohio-based nonprofit that provides affordable information management, education and technology services to nonprofits so that they can focus their efforts on the most important elements of their mission.  GroundWork group's arrival to Orange County was a result of a technology assessment of Orange County non-profits initiated by a convening of Orange County funders, non-profit leaders and technology professionals.

Grow Up Great: The Medina Family

Grow Up Great: Medina

As part of their 10th Anniversary, the Children & Families Commission of Orange County has spotlighted a number of Orange County families in their "Grow Up Great: Early Investments Yielding a lifetime of benefits" Campaign.  Check out MOMS 2010 Client Mother of the Year, Nancy, and her son Ricky, in this month's issue of OC Family or click here to access online version (pg 42).

0-5 Funding At Risk

One-third of MOMS annual budget comes from the Children & Families Commission of Orange County through Prop 10 funding.  Recently, due to the state budget crisis, this funding is in danger of being cut or eliminated.  Subsequently, this would mean a dramatic loss in services for all commission-funded organizations serving children 0-5 years in our community, including MOMS.  Read more about this issue (click here) or go here to see how Orange County may be impacted.

March is Women's History Month

Did you know - National Women's History Month was initiated in 1857 when women from New York City factories staged a protest over working conditions.  Moreover, International Women's Day (March 8th) was first observed in 1909, but it wasn't until 1981 that Congress established National Women's History Week and in 1987, Congress expanded the week to a month. Every year since, Congress has passed a resolution for Women's History Month, and the President has issued a proclamation (Click here to read).

Did you know - there are 82.8 million mothers of all ages in the United States. bwmommybaby

At MOMS Orange County, we believe that women anchor our societies and families, particularly in the area of well-being and health. A baby meets life by way of its mother and she, with the support of her partner, often has a large effect on the health trajectory of her baby - oftentimes, even before the baby is born.
