For Leonor, success has never been sweeter

"The holidays - oh that's when it's difficult because you want to eat everything!" Smiling, 6 -month pregnant Leonor Rodriguez shakes her head and chuckles, recalling the delicious temptations of the holiday season. Seasonal enticements are one of the many challenges she faces as a mother with diabetes during her pregnancy. Yet, thanks to MOMS Orange County's Pregnancy & Diabetes program, Leonor was able to safely make it through the holidays and continues to take control of her diabetes rather than allowing it to reign over her. Three years ago, Leonor was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes at the age of twenty-five. "I remember finding out after I attended a community health fair. Babies born to mothers with untreated gestational diabetes have nearly double the normal risk of becoming obese in childhood, not to mention developing diabetes and serious health problems in adulthood. MOMS Orange County's Pregnancy and Diabetes prevention model uses in-home health coordination and education to raise self-awareness about diabetes risk and management, and promote healthy habits through lifestyle change. Diabetes Prevention-Based Classes in Full Swing
In the Fall of 2010, MOMS Orange County began piloting a series of prevention-based classes in conjunction with its Pregnancy & Diabetes program taught by bilingual Diabetes Coordinator, Martha Londono, MPH (click here to read about Martha) The comprehensive curriculum ranges from guiding clients on how to control fat and sugar intake and creating a meal plan for oneself and family, to overcoming barriers to physical activity and identifying appropriate activity for each individual.
