This is an interesting word isn't it? To some it means giving up; raising the proverbial white flag. Losing control or letting "someone else" win.
When I looked up surrender in the dictionary one definition said,
"To give oneself up to the power of another - especially as a prisoner." With this definition, in order to surrender, it would mean I have to relinquish control. But I
need control my life, don't I? The answer is no, you don't need control your life. In fact, holding onto the illusion of control only makes life tougher for us. The biggest illusion we have is we think we know what is best for us, so we map out our lives and push circumstances to fit in that direction. When we do this, going against our Higher Power, we create unrest and turmoil within ourselves. But if we surrendered, we would realize our Higher Power wants more for us than we can even conceive or imagine.
What if I suggested that surrender could also mean
yielding to the power of another. And then, to go even further, how about if I suggested that the "power of another" is really ourselves? That in truth,
we are prisoners only to ourselves and to our beliefs, thoughts and patterns? Hmmm, now this gets interesting.
We are continually evolving into new versions of ourselves. The problem with the evolution of our soul is that as human beings, we are heck bent on patterns - patterns of thought, behavior, responses and the
need to seemingly control our experiences. But what if we surrendered? Surrendered to our heart and those little voices trying to guide us?
That involves letting go and if we let go, well gee, our path might not be the one we thought it was. We might be poor or single or live a life of perceived inadequacy.
But that's not the case - ever. When we let go and surrender to the gifts already inherent within us, our lives shine brightly. We radiate love and abundance. But because the undertone of surrender is one of "giving up" we become fearful. What if we give up what we have? Then what? We don't know.
Surrender means yielding to the power and the gifts inherent within us. It means letting go of patterns inhibiting us from living our life full out. It means believing in the abundance and love that is there for us all the time.
Surrender - it's a natural progression to becoming our most authentic self.
