Fall Issue #116 Kathy Reichs, William Kent Krueger, Mystery Cookbooks, Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Sister and much more!
Forthcoming Fall Issue | Hi everyone, We've got a terrific Fall Issue in the works. K athy Reichs, whose forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan stars in both print and TV, has taken multi-tasking to unprecedented levels. She's a fascinating person and a great interview. We also talk to William Kent Krueger, long known as a "writer's writer," but now a general favorite. Sherlock Holmes gets his comeuppance from a source close to home in Nancy Springer's terrific Enola Holmes YA novels and we review hundreds of the season's best books. When Brian and I took over Mystery Scene in Fall 2002, our first issue coincided with the one-year anniversary of the September 11th attacks. In remembrance, that first issue offered essays from several crime writers. SJ Rozan's contribution, "My New York," is one of the finest pieces to ever appear in Mystery Scene and one we're proud to offer now at the MS Website. Look for more contests and giveaways in this newsletter, at our website and in the magazine! Sincerely, Kate Stine Editor-in-Chief

Writers on Reading: Deon Meyer Ed McBain, King of Crime
Don's Book Exchange was a dusty secondhand bookshop about half an hour's bicycle ride from our
home in Klerksdorp--an oasis of affordable reading for a 14-year-old South African kid from
the wrong side of the tracks. It was where I bought my first Ed McBain novel. For 50 cents.
It was, in retrospect, a rite of passage.
Regrettably, I can't recall which of the McBain's 87th Precinct titles was the first one I read. However,
I do remember the fever and intense pleasure of discovering a new kind of book--grown-up, thrilling,
wry, suspenseful, gritty, witty, human...and a whole new genre; the police procedural, that somehow
captured my imagination like none before or since. It was like coming home.
And for the next four decades, I would buy and devour every book the late, great man wrote,
including a signed hardback copy of Alice in Jeopardy for $22.50 from Mysterious Galaxy in San
Diego during a US book tour, my most prized possession. (The very thought that I was sharing
a space Mr. McBain had also visited, thrills me to this day. And my only real claim to fame is
that he and I shared adjacent pages in our mutual Dutch publisher's catalogue some years ago.)
His books have inspired, taught, and greatly influenced me as an author. From the vivid city settings,
to the fallible, affable cop characters, the great dialogue, the perfect plotting, the word economy, and
his incredible work ethic, he will always remain, in my estimation, the King of Crime.
Deon Meyer's latest thriller is Thirteen Hours (Grove Atlantic, September 2010). www.deonmeyer.com

Mystery Crime Time TV Buzz on the best of the new fall lineup
Boardwalk Empire Debuts Sept. 19 on HBO When Martin Scorsese (Goodfellas) and Terence Winter (The Sopranos) whip up a cinematically stunning, $65 million production about Prohibiton-era style politics, gambling, and thuggery on the picturesque boardwalk of Atlantic City... It's at least worth a look. Featuring Steve Buscemi as the bug-eyed, bad-to-the-wallet politician Nucky Thompson, based on the real-life Enoch "Nucky" Johnson of the times.
Chase Debuts Sept. 20 on NBC Emmy-award wining producer Jerry Bruckheimer (CSI franchise) brings viewers tough Texas U.S. Marshall Annie Frost (Kelli Giddish) in this fast-paced action-drama. Also on the elite team are cowboy Jimmy Godfrey (Cole Hauser), intelligence expert Marco Martinez (Amaury Nolasco of Prison Break), weapons specialist Daisy Ogbaa (Rose Rollins), and eager rookie outsider Luke Watson (Jesse Metcalfe).
Hawaii Five-O Debuts Sept. 20 on CBS New and old fans alike will be interested in this update of the original classic series, which ran from 1968-1980 and starred Jack Lord as Detective Steve McGarrett. Alex O'Loughlin takes a stab at the new Steve McGarrett, head of the special Hawaii task force. Rounding out the team is ex-New Jersey cop Danny "Danno" WIlliams (Scott Caan), Hawaiian Detective Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim, Lost), and Chin's rookie cousin, Kono Kalakaua (Grace Park, Battlestar Galactica).
Undercovers Debuts Sept. 22 on NBC J.J. Abrams (Star Trek, Lost, Alias) and Josh Reims (Brothers and Sisters) bring their twist on the spy loves spy story of Mr. and Mrs. Smith to the small screen with plenty of sexy, international, espionage action. Retired CIA operatives Steven and Samantha Bloom (Boris Kodjoe and Gugu
Mbatha-Raw) are drawn back into the game when their colleague and close friend, Leo Nash (Carter MacIntyre), goes missing. With Abrams' name on the project, it's sure to be flashy and fun.
Blue Bloods Debuts Sept. 24, CBS New York Police Commissioner Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) manages the politics and dramas of a multigenerational law enforcement clan. On the enforcement end are officer sons the tough Iraq War vet Danny (Donny Wahlberg) and ambitious Harvard man Jamie (Will Estes). On the law end is assistant district attorney daughter Erin (Bridget Moynahan), also a single-mom. A police procedural with topnotch acting cred, it is already garnering good advance word from critics. Also new: Nikita (Sept. 9, CW); The Event (Sept. 20, NBC); Detroit 1-8-7 (Sept. 21, ABC); Law & Order: Los Angeles (Sept. 22, CBS); The Whole Truth (Sept. 22, ABC) The Defenders (Sept. 22, CBS); Outlaw (Sept. 24, NBC); Body of Proof (TBD, ABC)
Plus returning old favorites: Castle (Sept. 20, ABC); House (Sept. 20, FOX); Bones (Sept. 20, FOX); Chuck (Sept. 20, NBC); CSI: NY (Sept 21, CBS); NCIS (Sept. 21, CBS); NCIS: Los Angeles (Sept. 21, CBS); Criminal Minds (Sept. 22, CBS); Law & Order: SVU (Sept. 22, NBC); CSI (Sept. 23, CBS); The Mentalist (Sept. 23, CBS); Bored to Death (Sept. 26, HBO); Dexter (Sept. 26, Showtime); CSI: Miami (Oct. 3, CBS).
