A Note From the Governor
Greetings!
Well, it certainly is the Dog Days of Summer this year with all the record heat and Rotary is also hot with all its many programs and Service Above Self.
August is Membership and Extension month for Rotary and we all must remember our obligation to recruit new members for our clubs. Membership is Rotary's Present & Future; without new members we will not be able to carry out the Objectives of Rotary.
As President Elects each of you were asked to complete the Planning Guides for Effective Rotary Clubs. I would ask each of you to review those guides and the club goals for membership. There are many tools available to you to help with membership recruitment and retention. One simple tool is the 25 minute membership survey. This tool gets your whole club membership involved as it asks them to submit 30 names of professional colleagues, community leaders, and acquaintances who might qualify as potential Rotarians.
You can also log on to Member Access at Rotary International web site for other ideas for Membership Recruitment and Retention.
Don't forget our District Conference is set for October 7-8 at the Galt House in Louisville, KY. We will have several sessions that will give you information for making Bigger, Better, and Bolder Clubs, ideas for your clubs, and great speakers. RI will be sending a President Rep for our Friday night dinner, so plan now to attend, and mark your calendar. Can't wait to see you there.
Yours in Rotary,
Rick O. Baumgardner District 6710 Governor

August is Membership and Extension Month
Recruiting new members and starting new clubs are important to Rotary. Membership is always a hot topic at any Rotary gathering. August is Membership and Extension Month and a perfect time for your club to examine its membership practices. Are you, as a club leader, encouraging your club members to each take responsibility for recruiting new members? Do you provide your members with tips, ideas, and tools to recruit new members? Visit the RI website and browse the membership resources, and be sure to share the resources with your fellow Rotarians. Consider purchasing Rotary Basics (available from shop.rotary.org) to give out to prospective members. Create new member packets or implement a new member orientation program. Organize a recruitment competition among members. There is no end to the ideas for membership recruitment. The resources are out there, so make sure you are taking advantage of them and putting them to use.
Browse www.rotary.org for resources, or contact the District Membership Chair John Wade at John.Wade@goodwillky.org. Club extension - chartering of new Rotary Clubs - is also important. While we have 58 clubs in District 6710, there are still areas in our district where no Rotary clubs have been established. Take a look at a map of our district to see where we have room to grow. Do you have acquaintances in a community in our District where no Rotary club yet exists? Contact District Extension Chair Kevin Mays at kmays@hollandcpas.com to discuss the possibilities. Learn more about starting new clubs. |

Interact and Rotary's $200 Million Challenge
Congratulations go out this month to The Trigg County High School Interact Club. On July 29-30 The Trigg County High School Interact Club held a Rock A Thon to raise money for the US$200 Million Challenge. The group of 13 Interactors gathered to rock the night away and to rock polio off the face of the earth.
The event was kicked off by three lead-up Saturdays at local grocery stores. The students had the Eradicate Polio Challenge brochure and the Beat Polio Comic Books to hand out and posted the Beat Polio Posters on display. They went to the radio air waves twice to make sure the public knew what was going on and asking for pledges for each hour they rocked. On Friday, July 29th they met up at 7 PM with rocking chairs and rocking horses and began to "Rock" the night away. There were definitely some sleepy Interactors by 8 A.M. on Saturday morning, but they all made it and raised over $1400.00 in the process for Rotary's US $200 Million Challenge!
If your club has done something for Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge please let me know about it. Share your efforts with everyone! For advisors if you didn't know there is a new Interact Contribution Form designated for Interact Clubs who give to the US$200 Million Challenge. It is found at here.
Note this form is only to be used for contributions crediting an Interact club it is not for individual donations. According to Rotary International Foundation, Special Certificates of Appreciation will be sent out in the October 2011 time frame. Appropriate address is included on the form and all checks should be made out to Rotary Foundation. The form shows amounts of US100, US200, US300, and other. What a great opportunity to recognize our Interactors for the work they are doing to eradicate polio from the face of the earth!
If you have any question about the program or anything else please give me a call at 270-522-5565 or email your success story to myers.sandra@mchsi.com.

Paducah Rotaract Wins Grant for Charity
The Paducah Rotaract club was recently featured in the Rotary New Generations Newsletter and in The Paducah Sun newspaper for receiving a $1,000 Ventures award from MetLife Foundation. The money will go to support Child Watch Children's Advocacy Center, which provides child abuse protection and prevention services to the eight counties of the Purchase.
Each year, MetLife encourages its employees to submit videos that feature a charitable organization they care about. MetLife chooses the best videos and award grants ranging from $250 to $7,500. This year, the company accepted 35 video submissions.
Child Watch's video was shot in Paducah and features organization spokespeople and local leaders, including Mayor Bill Paxton and Police Chief James Berry.

Paducah Rotaract Vice President Sheloa Nichols said that she was inspired making this video.
"It practically made itself," she said. "Child Watch CAC works so quietly and so diligently, the public is largely unaware of the incredible impact they have on this community. I was so proud to be a part of bringing awareness to such a deserving non-profit organization."
To see Child Watch's video and learn more about services and volunteer opportunities, visit childwatchcac.org.

September is New Generations Month
We've all heard it said that today's youth and young adults are the future, the next generation, a new generation. This is true for Rotary as well. Today's youth and young adults are tomorrow's community and business leaders, parents, and Rotarians. That's why we underscore the importance of of Rotary involvement in shaping the lives of youth and young adults with September as New Generations Month. Now that New Generations is the 5th Avenue of Service, Rotary's commitment to youth and young adults has even more emphasis. The Rotary Manual of Procedure says, "It is the responsibility of each Rotarian to prepare the New Generations - all young people up to the age of 30 - by improving their life skills to ensure a better future, while recognizing the diversity of their needs. All clubs and districts are encouraged to undertake projects that support the fundamental needs of the New Generations: health, human values, education, and self-development." In District 6710 we support youth and young adults through programs such as Rotaract for our young professionals and college students, Interact, RYLA, and the Speech Contest for our high school students, District and local scholarships, and the many, many projects of individual clubs. How does your club support youth and young adults? How can you highlight New Generations Month? Check out some of the resources below.
