A Note From the Governor

Rick Baumgardner
Greetings!

After all the training, after all the planning and hard work, it's finally here, Rotary Year 2011-2012.  As we all volunteer our time to Rotary, we can and we will "make a difference" in our clubs and in our communities.  I thank each of you in your commitment of "Service Above Self".

Our Rotary International President, Kalyan Banerjee, has a 2011-2012 theme of "Reach Within to Embrace Humanity".  In this theme, he has set three emphasis for Rotary International and all its clubs:

  • Our first emphasis will be the family
  • Our second emphasis will be on continuity, on finding the things that we do well and taking them to the next level.
  • Our third emphasis will be change and we start by being the change we wish to see in the world.

So lets all Reach Within to Embrace Humanity in peace, harmony and friendship.

I am asking each of you to think of these emphases as you plan and execute the programs of your club.  I am also asking you to improve on your public image in your communities.  A good public image is good for your club and will increase membership.

I look forward to visiting each club this year with visits starting in mid July.

Yours in Rotary,

Rick O. Baumgardner
District 6710 Governor

District and RI Dues Now Payable

Checkbook
By now all clubs should have received their Semi Annual Report (SAR) from Rotary International.  You can also view and pay your SAR via the RI website's Member Access Portal.  To view the SAR you must be listed as the current club president or secretary.  Club presidents and secretaries can then grant access to the club treasurer, if necessary.  Payment of the SAR invoice is directed to Rotary International.

Also, District Dues statements have been mailed to all clubs.   Payment of District Dues is directed to the District Treasurer. The 2011-12 District Treasurer is Bill Doerr, PO Box 622, Elizabethtown, Ky 42702.  Phone: (270) 765-4188.  E-mail: doerrman@hotmail.com.
Save the Date: District Conference 2011-12

For the 2011-12 Annual District Conference, District 6710 is trying something new.  For the first time, we will hold our annual district conference in the fall rather than the spring.  We realize the spring-time is busy with other Rotary events such as PETS, the International Convention, the District Assembly, etc, and so we hope this new timing will be more convenient for you and your club members.

CalendarSo, save the date:
October 7-8, 2011
The Galt House Hotel in Louisville

Some highlights to look forward to:

  • On Friday, October 7, the Rotary Club of Louisville, one of the largest clubs in the country, will hold its regular weekly lunch meeting in conjunction with the district conference.
  • New topics for breakout sessions
  • Fantastic social events

Do you have suggestions for break-out session topics?  Send them to conference@rotarydistrict6710.org.

New District and Club Database Implemented

District 6710 has recently purchased a new database system that will benefit the clubs as well as the entire district.  This new system, known as the District and Club Database, or DaCdb, was presented more in depth at the recent District Assembly on June 11 in Elizabethtown.

Because the district has purchased this system, many tools are FREE to the clubs to use.  These free tools for clubs include things such as maintaining your membership data, updating data with RI, communication tools for your club, and more.  In addition there are several additional modules which clubs can purchase for dues invoicing, weekly attendance, club website, and club newsletter.

All incoming club presidents and secretaries for 2011-12 will be receiving an e-mail with details and log-in information.  Our district point of contact for DaCdb is Mary Kathryn DeLodder, mk@rotarydistrict6710.org; 502-592-0930.

For additional help, or for information on purchasing the additional modules, you can contact DaCdb at DaCdbInfo@DaCdb.com or by phone at 252-257-2563.

Rotary Day at the UN 2011

UN Logo

Bill Miller, PDG from Frankfort, KY and RI Alternate Representative to the UN, would like to invite you to the 2011 Rotary Day on November 5 at the UN.  Rotary and the United Nations have a long history of working together and sharing similar visions for a more peaceful world.

Each year at Rotary UN Day, more than 1600 Rotarians including many Rotary International Directors, Foundation Trustees, past Senior Leaders, and guests come together at UN Headquarters in New York.  The program is designed to inspire and educate all participants as well as provide insight into the relationship between Rotary and the United Nations.  In the past, the day has been very successful and has sold out.

For more information and to register visit http://riunday.org/

Club Secretaries - Submitting Attendance to District No Longer Required

Returning Club secretaries will be familiar with the practice of submitting your monthly attendance records to the District.  For 2011-12, DG Rick has decided that we will NOT collect this information.  No awards will be given out for 2011-12 based on attendance.  So, club secretaries, there is one item you can cross off of your monthly to-do list!

Meet the District Interact Chair Interact Logo

Organizing an Interact club is one of the most rewarding activities a Rotary club can undertake in its community. The Interact program gives Rotarians the opportunity to mentor dynamic young men and women who want to help the local and international community.  An Interact club can bring new energy to a Rotary club, inspiring fresh ideas for service, increasing support to projects, and spreading knowledge of Rotary into other sectors of the community.

The Interact program lays the ground work for RYLA and Rotary Youth Exchange Programs.  Interactors, with the experience they've gained through this Rotary-sponsored program, make exceptional future Rotaractors and later Rotarians.

If you are a Rotarian who serves as an Interact advisor I am looking forward to visiting you and your club these next months. You can reach me at 270-522-5565.  I am at your disposal to help with ideas, provide information, or just to talk. My goal for District 6710 is to have the most active Interact program in Zone 30.

Rotaract Leadership Training Seminar 2011

On June 25th and 26th the third annual Rotaract Leadership Training Seminar (RLTS) was hosted by District 6710 was held on the campus of Bellarmine University in Louisville, KY. RLTS is an intensive one-weekend training program for Rotaract leaders from around the region.  The extensive curriculum was devised by seasoned Rotaract leaders with international experience in conjunction with Rotarian trainers from the Rotary Leadership Institute and Rotary Mid-South PETS.

RLTS 2011

The training seminar provided a valuable opportunity for Rotaract members from our several districts in Kentucky, Indiana, Missouri, Illinois, and Arkansas to share thoughts and ideas in order to strengthen and improve the future of Rotaract.

August is Membership and Extension Month

Recruiting new members and starting new clubs are important to Rotary.  Membership is always a hot topic at any Rotary gathering.  August is Membership and Extension Month and a perfect time for your club to examine its membership practices.  Are you, as a club leader, encouraging your club members to each take responsibility for recruiting new members?  Do you provide your members with tips, ideas, and tools to recruit new members?  Visit the RI website and browse the membership resources, and be sure to share the resources with your fellow Rotarians.  Consider purchasing Rotary Basics (available from shop.rotary.org) to give out to prospective members.  Create new member packets or implement a new member orientation program.  Organize a recruitment competition among members. There is no end to the ideas for membership recruitment.  The resources are out there, so make sure you are taking advantage of them and putting them to use.

Browse www.rotary.org for resources, or contact the District Membership Chair John Wade at John.Wade@goodwillky.org.

Club extension - chartering of new Rotary Clubs - is also important.  While we have 58 clubs in District 6710, there are still areas in our district where no Rotary clubs have been established.  Take a look at a map of our district to see where we have room to grow.  Do you have acquaintances in a community in our District where no Rotary club yet exists?  Contact District Extension Chair Kevin Mays at kmays@hollandcpas.com to discuss the possibilities.

Editor's Note

YouHenry James DeLodder might be wondering why the July edition of the Spectrum District 6710 Newsletter is coming to you a bit later than usual.  Well, our District Administrative Assistant and Newsletter Editor, Mary Kathryn DeLodder and her husband, Eric, welcomed their new baby boy, Henry James DeLodder, to the world on July 14, 2011.  It was quite a surprise since Henry was not expected for another month!  A future Rotarian, for sure!
