A Note From the Governor

Greetings! DG Woody Northup

I am writing this letter to you on June 1st, which happens to be my birthday (I'm not telling which one), but I can't help but also look ahead to July 1st, which is the date I will become a Past District Governor. All District Governors joke that all they ever really wanted was to become a Past District Governor, but don't let that fool you. It has been a distinct honor and privilege to be your Governor for the last year.

That "year" actually started well before July 1st, 2010. There was a terrific amount of time and energy expended in preparing your presidents at the President Elect Training Seminar in March 2010. Hopefully, that helped prepare each of them for one of the best years your club has ever had.

Probably the highlight of my year was visiting each of your clubs last summer and fall. I started my visits on July 21, 2010 and finished the 58th visit on November 2, 2010. In between, I saw the tremendous energy and goodness each of your clubs brings to your community. It was very inspiring to me! I was able to meet with each of your boards and deliver my message to your members about the chance for our generation to make a difference in the world through Rotary.

If there is anything I would want to leave you with as we close out our year, it is that your Rotary club makes a wonderful difference in your community, and the 34,000 Rotary clubs around the world make a huge difference in the world. But it takes each of us as individuals to make sure that continues to happen by doing the following:

We must evangelize a little in our own communities to attract more members.

We must personally contribute our $100 to The Rotary Foundation so that our world-wide impact is maximized.

We must support our own club's projects with money and manpower.

And we must be sure we let others in our community know about our efforts to make a difference.

If we do these four things, the future of Rotary is indeed in very good hands. As I said above, I have loved serving as your Governor. Thanks very much for your support this past year.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Woody Northup
District 6710 Governor
June is Rotary Fellowships Month                     Rotary Fellowships Logo

Rotary was founded on fellowship, a concept that has been expanded internationally through the Rotary Fellowships, groups that bring together members from different countries and cultures to enjoy a shared interest. In addition to fostering lifelong friendships, Rotary Fellowships keep members active in Rotary, sustaining their interest and further inspiring commitment.

The nearly one hundred Rotary Fellowships encompass a variety of vocations and avocations, ranging from sports and hobbies to professional interests - all of which serve as a way to extend international fellowship, friendship, and service. In addition to offering
members an opportunity to share their passion for a particular interest with like-minded Rotarians, many individual fellowship groups enable members to use their hobbies or skills to serve others. For example, the Fellowship of Canoeing Rotarians has
organized cleanups of polluted rivers, and members of the International Computer Users Fellowship of Rotarians conduct training sessions for Rotarians and other people in their community on how to use electronic media. Members of the International Fellowship of Rotarians with Repaired Hearts - or the "Zipper Club," as they call themselves - have provided life-saving surgeries to
disadvantaged children with severe heart defects.

Do your club members know about Rotary Fellowships?  Would some of them enjoy membership in one of these groups?  Consider a program in June that showcases Rotary Fellowships.

Zone 30 Success Seminars                                Zone 30-31 Map

Coming in June is the Rotary Zone-wide (multiple districts in our area) Success Seminars for Membership and The Rotary Foundation.  This is a great opportunity to attend informational and educational sessions that span well beyond just our district.  Any interested Rotarians are encouraged to attend, but especially your Membership, Foundation, and PR chairs.

Two dates are offered.  However, please note that the June 11 date in Alabama conflicts with our District Assembly.  Therefore, you are encouraged to attend the June 18 date in Covington, KY.

Topics to be covered include: RI Strategic Plan, RI Programs, Membership, Building Bigger, Better and Bolder Clubs; TRF Future Vision Plan, TRF programs and emphases, and Public Image and PR.

Please share this information with those who may be interested and encourage them to attend on June 18 in Covington.

Rotaract Leadership Training Seminar 2011

Rotaract logo

When: June 25-26, 2011
Where: Bellarmine University, Louisville

What: RLTS is an intensive one-weekend training program for Rotaract leaders hosted by District 6710.  The extensive curriculum was devised by seasoned Rotaract leaders with international experience in conjunction with Rotarian trainers from the Rotary Leadership Institute and Rotary Mid-South PETS.  Because of the amount of information covered in the weekend, participants will also be provided with a detailed resource packet for use as a reference tool after the seminar.

Who: Any Rotaract member can attend. Rotaract officers for 2011-11, particularly incoming club presidents, are especially encouraged to attend.  Rotaract club advisors and Rotarians involved with Rotaract are also highly encouraged to attend.  Topics will be applicable to both university and community based/young professional Rotaract clubs.

How Much: Because District 6710 believes education and training is vital to our Rotaract clubs, there is no cost for registration, materials, and most meals for those from District 6710.

See our website for full details.

Columbia, East Louisville Sunrise Selected as Pilot Clubs

In an effort to accommodate changes that have occurred in our professional environments, in family structures, and in personal commitments, the RI Board of Directors tests new ideas, methods, and organizational frameworks for clubs by conducting pilot projects. These projects are aimed at securing Rotary's future as a premier humanitarian service organization. Pilot clubs that participate in these experiments are fully functioning Rotary clubs that are exempt from some requirements in the Standard Rotary Club Constitution.

In November 2010, the Board approved four new pilots to run concurrently from 1 July 2011 to 30 June 2014.  We are proud to announce that two clubs in District 6710 were accepted for these pilots.

The Rotary Club of East Louisville Sunrise was accepted for the Associate Member pilot program, and the Rotary Club of Columbia was accepted for the Innovation and Flexibility pilot program.  Read more about the pilot programs on the RI website.

New District and Club Database Implemented

District 6710 has recently purchased a new database system that will benefit the clubs as well as the entire district.  This new system, known as the District and Club Database, or DaCdb, was presented more in depth at the recent District Assembly on June 11 in Elizabethtown.

Because the district has purchased this system, many tools are FREE to the clubs to use.  These free tools for clubs include things such as maintaining your membership data, updating data with RI, communication tools for your club, and more.  In addition there are several additional modules which clubs can purchase for dues invoicing, weekly attendance, club website, and club newsletter.

All incoming club presidents and secretaries for 2011-12 will be receiving an e-mail with details and log-in information.  Our district point of contact for DaCdb is Mary Kathryn DeLodder, mk@rotarydistrict6710.org; 502-592-0930.

For additional help, or for information on purchasing the additional modules, you can contact DaCdb at DaCdbInfo@DaCdb.com or by phone at 252-257-2563.

GSE Team to GermanyGSE Blog

We are now half way through this year's Group Study Exchange.  The German GSE Team from District 1810 arrived in Louisville at 1:30 AM Sunday April 17th after a 6 hour weather delay in Washington DC.  Other than what seemed to be bad weather following them for much of their stay, they had a great time in Kentucky and at the multi-district conference in Nashville.  They returned to Germany on Saturday May 15th.  A big thank you to all of the host clubs and families that made their experience so enjoyable.

Our GSE Team left for Germany on Saturday, June 4th and will return on Sunday, July 3rd.  District 1810 has put together a great itinerary and our team is already enjoying this exchange.   Keep up with the team on their travels through their blog:

Ambassadorial Scholar

Chase
Our Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, Chase Warner, needs our help! Cure Kids was co-founded by a Rotarian in 1975 and is responsible for funding vital life saving medical research for life threatening illnesses that affect children. The organization does work in New Zealand, Fiji, Australia and the United States. The NZ Ambassadorial scholars of 2011 have entered one team; Caresse Bucchan of District 5810/9930 and Chase Warner of District 6710/9980. Caresse and Chase need to raise at least $8,000 NZD for the 3 day Queenstown Challenge event on August 16-19. The challenge is to get from Queenstown to Auckland on $10

Our scholars are working together to make a difference in the lives of our kids and they need and would love the support of all Rotarians in 6710 district as they represent us in this challenge bringing publicity to a youth oriented Rotary to help their team reach our goal as soon as possible. They will do all the rest by successfully making the journey on ONLY $10!!

Here are some ways you can help:

1.  You can DONATE.  They've set up a fundraising page where you can view their cute faces, read some blog posts as they post them, read about the challenge and contribute any amount of money you can spare for a wonderful, truly good cause...the health of children everywhere.  Here is the website:
Support Cure Kids: Chase and Caresse!

2.  You can SPREAD THE WORD to people or businesses that you think may be able to donate.  We recognize that times are tough, but anything "publicity" you can help them with would be much appreciated.  Maybe start a coin bank in your office?  Perhaps you know a business that would love to donate?  Get creative!

3.  You can send WORDS OF SUPPORT!  While they love dollars and cents, they also love encouragement.  The challenge is difficult and they're going to need some major morale boosters as they head closer and closer to August!  Feel free to e-mail Chase at cmwarner88@gmail.com with your support.

The scholars thank you all for your support any way you can give it!

Rotary Day at the UN 2011

UN Logo

Bill Miller, PDG from Frankfort, KY and RI Alternate Representative to the UN, would like to invite you to the 2011 Rotary Day on November 5 at the UN.  Rotary and the United Nations have a long history of working together and sharing similar visions for a more peaceful world.

Each year at Rotary UN Day, more than 1600 Rotarians including many Rotary International Directors, Foundation Trustees, past Senior Leaders, and guests come together at UN Headquarters in New York.  The program is designed to inspire and educate all participants as well as provide insight into the relationship between Rotary and the United Nations.  In the past, the day has been very successful and has sold out.
