A Note From the Governor

Greetings! DG Woody Northup

The great baseball pitcher Satchel Paige once said, "Never look back...something might be gaining on you."

At the risk of violating Satchel Paige's maxim, I must look back to our Multi-District Conference and tell you how pleased and happy I am at having so many of you participate in this very successful event. Great weather, great people, great events, and great speakers...it was truly a celebration of Rotary and Rotarians, and I thank those who took the time and made the effort to come to Nashville for making it a wonderful weekend. I know I was rewarded for attending, and I trust you were also.

There are a couple more upcoming events which will reward you as well. The first is the Rotary International Convention May 22-25 in New Orleans. This is the last convention to be held in the USA for six years, so don't miss the opportunity to visit one of America's legendary cities. There will be great dining and wonderful entertainment.  The RI Convention is also a great way to experience the global aspect of our wonderful organization. So come on down and celebrate Rotary on a grand scale in New Orleans! Details can be found at www.rotary.org or further down in this newsletter.

The second event I want to emphasize is our District 6710 Assembly, which will be held on June 11 in Elizabethtown. This year's assembly will take a different format than assemblies of recent years.  The 2011 format will include educational sessions for your entire incoming leadership team.  This includes incoming presidents, secretaries, treasurers, Rotary Foundation Chairs, PR chairs, and anyone else that is considered to be a part of club leadership. See below for more details, and don't miss this opportunity to make your club Bigger, Better, and Bolder.

Finally, I want to remind you that before the Rotary year slips away you need to make your $100 donation (or more if possible) to The Rotary Foundation. In my visits to your clubs last summer and fall, I talked about the importance of The Rotary Foundation in making the world a better place. Giving a gift to The Rotary Foundation is one way our generation can make a difference in the world. Don't miss that chance to do good in the world! If you haven't done so already, write your check and give it to your treasurer so he or she can send it in. Your organization-Rotary-does great things all over the world, including in your own community. Make sure you do your part.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Woody Northup

Membership Corner

The future of Rotary depends on our ability to make Rotary meaningful, relevant, and attractive to the next generation of Rotarians. As members leave due to health concerns or die, recruiting younger members secures the club's future. The strategies adopted by each club to recruit new members will affect the continuity of Rotary and its ability to serve the future.

Membership LogoThus far for the Rotary year the District membership has a 0.87% decrease which can be considered not bad considering our country and local communities economical challenges. Some of our clubs have experienced impressive club membership increases such as the Clinton club with a 35% increase followed by Columbia at 27%. Other clubs with double digit increases are as follows; Union County 21%, Dawson Springs 16%, Hickman 16%, Scottsville 10% and Auburn at 10%

Who: Any Rotaract member can attend. Rotaract officers for 2011-11, particularly incoming club presidents, are especially encouraged to attend.  Rotaract club advisors and Rotarians involved with Rotaract are also highly encouraged to attend.  Topics will be applicable to both university and community based/young professional Rotaract clubs.

Each year at Rotary UN Day, more than 1600 Rotarians including many Rotary International Directors, Foundation Trustees, past Senior Leaders, and guests come together at UN Headquarters in New York.  The program is designed to inspire and educate all participants as well as provide insight into the relationship between Rotary and the United Nations.  In the past, the day has been very successful and has sold out.

June is Rotary Fellowships Month                     Rotary Fellowships Logo

Rotary was founded on fellowship, a concept that has been expanded internationally through the Rotary Fellowships, groups that bring together members from different countries and cultures to enjoy a shared interest. In addition to fostering lifelong friendships, Rotary Fellowships keep members active in Rotary, sustaining their interest and further inspiring commitment.

The nearly one hundred Rotary Fellowships encompass a variety of vocations and avocations, ranging from sports and hobbies to professional interests - all of which serve as a way to extend international fellowship, friendship, and service. In addition to offering
members an opportunity to share their passion for a particular interest with like-minded Rotarians, many individual fellowship groups enable members to use their hobbies or skills to serve others. For example, the Fellowship of Canoeing Rotarians has
organized cleanups of polluted rivers, and members of the International Computer Users Fellowship of Rotarians conduct training sessions for Rotarians and other people in their community on how to use electronic media. Members of the International Fellowship of Rotarians with Repaired Hearts - or the "Zipper Club," as they call themselves - have provided life-saving surgeries to
disadvantaged children with severe heart defects.

Do your club members know about Rotary Fellowships?  Would some of them enjoy membership in one of these groups?  Consider a program in June that showcases Rotary Fellowships.

Club Secretaries - Submit Your Attendance Numbers
