A Note From the Governor
Greetings!
As I sit here writing this letter to you, I can look out my window and see flowering trees and shrubs of all descriptions. The sun is shining, the sky is clear. Spring has returned to our Commonwealth in all its grandeur. I suspect we are all ready for it.
However, I don't want you to get Spring Fever and forget the wonderful things we still have in front us this last quarter of the Rotary year. First of all, the best District Conference ever held in our district will be held this month. The Music City Encore will be held in Nashville, TN April 29th through May 1st. It will be a grand celebration heldby the two districts in Kentucky and the two districtsin Tennessee, and in addition to being informative, social, and entertaining, it will be FUN!
On Friday night, we will set sail on the famous General Jackson Showboat and cruise the Cumberland River while being wined, dined, and entertained by some of the best young talent
Nashville has to offer. Our own Mary Kathryn DeLodder will be our luncheon speaker on Saturday. Finally, the leader of the Rotary world Ray Klinginsmith will speak to us at the gala dinner on Saturday night.
Invitations and brochures have been sent to all of you, so make sure you register as soon as possible. You can also go to this site to register: www.kytnrotary.org Or simply fill out the information and send or fax it in.
Then in May, be sure to make plans to attend the Rotary International Convention May 22-25 in New Orleans. This is the last convention to be held in the USA for seven years, so don't miss the opportunity to visit one of America's legendary cities. There will be great dining and wonderful entertainment, but the RI Convention is also a great way to experience the global aspect of our wonderful organization. So come on down and celebrate Rotary on a grand scale in New Orleans! Details can be found at www.rotary.org
Finally, I know that many of our clubs have their main fund raisers in the months ahead. So work hard for your club and your community. The opportunity to make a difference in your community and the world doesn't come along every day. Make the most of this chance to do so.
Yours in Rotary Service,
Woody Northup District 6710 Governor

Membership Corner Educating perspective members about Rotary membership contributes to long-term retention of new members. Your club's prospective member information program should provide a broad overview of Rotary International and the Rotary Foundation, with a focus on the benefits and responsibilities of membership in your club, including an overview of your club's primary projects and activities. Your club's program should cover the following topics in three separate information sessions. - Rotary policies and procedures
- Opportunities for service
- Rotary history and Achievements
An effective orientation to Rotary begins as soon as a qualified prospective member is identified. Learning the expectations and benefits of Rotary membership early in the process helps prospective members make well informed decisions to accept the formal invitation, when it's extended
A guide offering recommendations for developing each stage of your club's orientation, from prospective member education to new member orientation can be provided. Just let me know and I will mail it to you and you are encouraged to customize it to best meet the needs of your club.

Murray Charters Two New Interact Clubs
On March 24, the Rotary Club of Murray welcomed two new Interact Clubs to the Family of Rotary: the Interact Clubs of Murray High School and Calloway County Middle School.
Especially notable is that the Calloway County Middle School Club is the first middle school club in District 6710, and one of the first middle school clubs to be chartered anywhere. The RI Board of Directors only recently lowered the minimum age for Interact allowing Interact Clubs to be chartered at middle schools for the first time.

KET/Rotary Show
Our District 6710 New Generations Program is working on an hour long KET television show that will feature this years' annual Speech Contest. I n addition, the show will provide an opportunity for us to tell our Rotary story in and around our youth speech presentations.
In order for the show to be effective we will need the assistance from as many of our District 6710 individual clubs as is possible - Rotary International is providing all the digital photos and disc we will need to tell our international story, but we need as many digital photos and discs as we can get to tell our Kentucky Rotary story.
Please, look into your clubs photo albums. We need photos showing your club in action - doing the many, many good deeds and community service projects that so many of our clubs do each year. We also need photos showing Rotarians having some fun time as well.
The photos and /or discs must be of digital quality in order to show effectively on television - please send what you can to:
L. Thomas Sorrell BCCLT, Inc. 601 Main Street Shelbyville, KY 40065 Or via e-mail: Sorrell@BCCLT.com
Please, send what you can by the well remembered date of April 15, 2011.
Also, if you or anyone in your club is willing to provide sponsorship dollars for the show please contact Chuck Cicchella, PDG and District New Generations Chairman at geriandchuck@earthlink.net. All sponsors will be presented as required by KET Underwriting Guidelines. |
