A Note From the Governor
Greetings! January is Rotary Awareness month for the 1.2 million Rotarians and almost 34,000 clubs worldwide. For millions of people around the world, January is also a time to be aware of their particular situations in life, both good and bad, and resolve to improve in areas where they feel it's needed. For those of us in the Rotary world, it's an especially good time to evaluate our current position. We are exactly half way through our Rotary year. We started out last July 1st resolved to have the best year ever for our Rotary clubs. I visited all the clubs in our district and got an up-close and personal view of the plans each club had for the coming year. So how are we doing as we start the second half of our journey? Have you and your club made plans to attract and sign up some new members? Remember that attracting new members to your club is essential to both your present and your future. New members bring new perspectives and passion that invigorates those of us who have been around for awhile. It's also good to be aware that Rotary clubs on average will lose 10% of their members every year. Finding new members to take their places is essential. How is your club doing on your charitable projects and the fund raising to support those projects? Service Above Self is what distinguishes Rotary from other purely social clubs. We are dedicated to making our communities and our world a better place. How is your club doing with soliciting and attaining contributions to The Rotary Foundation? Remember that The Rotary Foundation is the vehicle which allows us to make a difference in the future of our world. It is our time to make the same kinds of contributions that our parents and grandparents made to make the world a better place. You can do this by donating $100 or more to The Rotary Foundation. Have you personally made your contribution yet? Many of the clubs in our district did a wonderful job of earning money for Polio Plus by working at the World Equestrian Games. But remember that each club has an obligation to donate $2,000 to Polio Plus this year. How is your club doing on this? So regardless of what happened in the first half of the year, we still have a full six months to make sure we achieve our goals for the year. Let's resolve to do the following: - Be aware of where you stand.
- Take stock of your club's goals.
- Get to work and get it done!
Yours in Rotary Service, Woody Northup District 6710 Governor |

The RI President's Monthly Message - Test Time!
We are at the halfway point in this Rotary year, and now is the time to test the strengths and weaknesses of our clubs. Perhaps a strange idea for some Rotarians, but how else will we learn how the activities and programs of our respective clubs match up to those of other clubs in our districts - and around the world? Therefore, I encourage all Rotarians - not only the club officers - to become involved in evaluating their clubs during the month of January. The Presidential Citation program for 2010-11 has been designed as a score sheet for all the Avenues of Service. It also is a checklist for many of the activities and programs conducted by most clubs. Club presidents are required to complete the score sheets and submit them to their district governors by 31 March 2011 for their clubs to be eligible for the Presidential Citation awards. The scores should be shared with all club members either as written reports or as presentations at club meetings. Starting work on the Presidential Citation test in January will provide an opportunity to correct any discovered deficiencies in club activities before the submission deadline of 31 March. It also will cause the club leaders to notice that a new Presidential Citation with Distinction award is available this year for clubs with a good balance of activities in all Avenues of Service. This year I am recommending that all clubs review their practices and procedures to see if they are truly best practices or merely traditional practices. Annual evaluations of our clubs are certainly best practices, and more Rotarians than usual need to be involved in the evaluations for their clubs. The Presidential Citation score sheets are a good place to start the process. How else will we know if our clubs really are becoming Bigger, Better, and Bolder? Ray Klinginsmith, RI President

Group Study Exchange - Host Clubs Needed!
Things are coming together for the GSE with District 1810 in Germany. Becky Ricketts and her team are hard at work preparing for their trip to Germany in June 2011. During the last week of December I received updated biographies and a "Wish" list for the GSE team from Germany. These will be posted to the District website and forwarded to the clubs that have indicated they want to be hosts so that appropriate vocational activities can be scheduled. At this point, we have more host clubs that have volunteered than we will be able to accommodate, so having good vocational opportunities for the German team will be critical in the selection process. One big problem so far is that no clubs in the western half of the district have applied to be a host, which is just unacceptable. It is planned to make final host club selections by the end of January, with the final itinerary sent to RI within 2 weeks after selection. At this time, we are taking applications from Rotary Clubs to serve as hosts to this team.
We have had several clubs express interest in being a host club for this exchange, however the concept of putting a tentative schedule together eludes most. To apply as a host club, send a tentative itinerary by e-mail or postal to: Lauch Hines, 5601 Coral Berry Place, Crestwood, KY 40014; LauchHines@targetretire.com
Each final itinerary should show the location and a contact person for each team member at every moment during the tour. If a district does not submit their complete host district itinerary to the GSE department prior to departure, they will not be allowed to travel.
Any club selected to host must provide: - Names, street addresses and contact information of each host family.
- A schedule of host families and all planned activities.
- Specific location of all planned activities.
- Names and contact information for any Rotarians escorting the team.
- At least one day's activity devoted to the vocation of each member.
This MUST be done IMMEDIATELY AFTER being selected, as the itinerary must be sent in to Rotary at least 45 days before the scheduled arrival of the team. GSE hosting is a most rewarding experience for all involved. If there are any questions or comments, feel free to call Chair Lauch Hines at (502) 243-3525.

Consider a Gift to The Rotary Foundation from your IRA
Rotary International News -- 21 December 2010
New legislation has extended the IRA charitable rollover -- a provision that permits individuals age 70½ and older to make tax-free distributions of up to US$100,000 from an IRA directly to charity.
Donors have until 31 January to make distributions that will be treated as if they were made in 2010.
Consider an IRA charitable rollover if you are at least age 70½ and you do not need the additional income generated by the required minimum distribution, you do not itemize deductions, or you want to use unneeded assets to secure a Rotary legacy.
To make a gift to The Rotary Foundation from your IRA, download the IRA transfer forms, or contact Planned Giving at plannedgiving@rotary.org for more information.
Download the Nurture Your Rotary Dream brochure (PDF) to learn more about the IRA rollover.

February is Literacy Month In 1985, Rotary declared basic literacy to be a pre-condition to the development of peace. Through this organizational emphasis, more than half the world's Rotary clubs address the full range of literacy and mathematical challenges for primary, vocational, and adult learners as well as teacher training. Many Rotary club members promote what is termed "lighthouse" literacy projects - those that can be replicated easily, thereby increasing the scope of their impact. Lighthouse literacy projects have been created for formal schooling, older children who are not in school, functionally illiterate adults (particularly women), special groups, and teacher's training. The purpose of these projects is to inspire, guide and support national authorities toward alleviating mass illiteracy in developing countries. In Thailand, for example, the "lighthouse" literacy effort has been so successful that the government adopted it as a national program. Similar literacy initiatives have been sponsored by Rotary clubs in Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, and South Africa. The Rotary Foundation promotes education and literacy for all by - Ensuring that children have access to quality basic education
- Reducing gender disparity in education
- Increasing adult literacy
- Strengthening the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy
- Supporting studies related to basic education and literacy
Search www.rotary.org for resources and examples of literacy projects that your club can implement.
