A Note From the Governor
Greetings!
September is New Generations
month in the Rotary calendar. This year, that designation has taken on added
significance. At the recently completed Council on Legislation, New Generations
was added as the Fifth Avenue
of Service, joining Club, Community, Vocational, and International Service. Why has Rotary International
chosen to do this? It is an explicit recognition of the contributions to Rotary
goals and objectives that are already being made by young people in our many
youth programs, and the potential youth have for making them in the future. It
also emphasizes the fact that we must plan for our future as well as take care
of the present. One of my District goals this
year is that every club participate in one of our New Generation programs. In
order to become a Club of Distinction, a club must adhere to this goal. So if
your club is not already sponsoring an Interact club, a Rotaract Club, a
student or students for RYLA, or nominating a student for an Ambassadorial
Scholarship, now would be a good time to look into that possibility. With New
Generations, the future is now. Don't let it pass you by. I also want to emphasize the
importance of recruiting volunteers to work the concession stands at the World
Equestrian Games. At the time of this writing, we are only a little more than
half way to our goal, and there are only 3 weeks left before the start of the
games. This is a project everyone can
and should participate in, with great dividends for our quest to End Polio Now.
Your spouse, adult children, fellow workers, fellow church-goers, athletic
teammates, and good friends can also lend a hand in this great cause. Each
volunteer will also earn a free general admission ticket to the games on
another day. Rotarians, we need your help now. Don't delay. Sign up now at
Rotary-WEG.org.
Yours in Rotary Service, Woody Northup District 6710 Governor |
September is New Generations Month
We've all heard it said that
today's youth and young adults are the future, the next generation, a new generation. This is true for
Rotary as well. Today's youth and young adults are tomorrow's community
and business leaders, parents, and Rotarians. That's why we underscore
the importance of of Rotary involvement in shaping the lives of youth
and young adults with September as New
Generations Month.
Now that New Generations is the 5th Avenue of Service, Rotary's commitment to youth and young adults has even more emphasis.
The Rotary Manual of Procedure says, "It is
the responsibility of each Rotarian to prepare the New Generations - all
young people up to the age of 30 - by improving their life skills to
ensure a better future, while recognizing the diversity of their
needs. All clubs and districts are encouraged to undertake projects that
support the fundamental needs of the New Generations: health, human
values, education, and self-development."
In District 6710 we
support youth and young adults through programs such as Rotaract for our
young professionals and college students, Interact, RYLA, and the
Speech Contest for our high school students, District and local
scholarships, and the many, many projects of individual clubs.
How
does your club support youth and young adults? How can you highlight
New Generations Month? Check out some of the resources below.

Rotary and the World Equestrian Games By now you know that Rotary
has forged a unique relationship with the public concessionaire for the
World Equestrian Games. Rotarians, along their families and friends, will be
the primary work force serving food and performing cashier duties at the
games' public concession sites. The money we earn will go to the Rotary
Foundation, including for Polio Plus. Based on projections, we estimate
that our efforts can earn between $300,000 - $400,000 to help us all
put "Service Above Self" and "End Polio Now." And what a great
way to raise money for this lifesaving effort! Time is running out and we need to recruit many more volunteers immediately! The Games take place September
25 - October 10. There are two shifts each day: 7:00am
- 3:00pm and 11:30am - 7:30pm. Each club needs
to recruit Rotarians, friends, family members, or anyone over the age of
18 to sign up to work one or more shifts. Non-Rotarians can list the
name of the Rotarian who recruited them so that your club gets credit. Each
volunteer will receive an additional
free pass for another day at the Games as a spectator. To sign up, go to www.Rotary-WEG.org and follow the
website instructions. Need a place to stay?Several
Rotarians in Louisville and surrounding areas are willing to host
Rotarians in their homes during the games. This is a perfect
opportunity for those clubs located father away from Lexington. For
information on home hosting, or to offer to host Rotarians in your home,
contact Mary Kathryn at mk@rotarydistirct6710.org. Promote WEG at a
Rotary MeetingYou have a captive audience of
Rotarians each week at your club meeting. Encourage members to sign up

RYLA 2010 is Just Around the Corner The 2010 RYLA is just around the corner. "Leadership the Cowboy Way" is the theme for this year's
RYLA and the training will be designed around Cowboy Ethics and the Code of the
West. We are planning a great weekend
for the students coming this year and hope that all clubs will be able to
participate. RYLA is scheduled for
September 23-26, 2010 at the Wendell H Ford Regional Training
Center in Greenville. Email Cathy Williamson at cwilliamson@bbbkyin.comtoday with information about your clubs plans. We need to know now if you plan to sponsor a student(s). You can send us information on your students
and a check by September 15.
Highlights of the weekend include a visit to the Owensboro Science Museum
and a demonstration of cowboy skills by members of the Kentucky High School
Rodeo Association. We will again have
our talent show and Rotary Amazing Race. Our service project this year is packaging school supplies to send to
Maj. Fred Bates in Afghanistan. Fred will distribute the supplies to the
schools in the area he serves. Send us school supplies or money for us to
buy school supplies. We also need clubs
to sponsor postage to mail the boxes. A
donation of $25 will mail a box and we will note on the outside that it is
sponsored by your Rotary Club. We also need adult volunteers, especially women. Come on, Cowgirls, pony up for a great
weekend in Greenville
and make a difference in the lives of some special young ladies. We could use more guys, too, so get in touch
with Chuck Cicchella ( geriandchuck@earthlink.net)

Saturday morning, September 18 in Elizabethtown. Yee Haw! Note: Sponsorship of a RYLA candidate will fulfill a requirement of the Governor's Club of Distinction Award. |

Membership Corner
I was once told that there are as
many ideas about membership as there are members of Rotary. If there is such an abundance of ideas, then w hy
are some clubs experiencing a dwindling of membership? The answer is, we probably just don't do a
good enough job asking people to visit our clubs or explain to potential
members what Rotary is all about. In some cases, I think some members may feel
that they don't have enough understanding of Rotary to answer a potential member's
questions so they avoid approaching them. I have a three fold business size card that I
would be glad to send to you which explains what Rotary is all about. Just send me an email at john.wade@goodwillky.org and let me
know how many cards you need. Anything you would like to know
about a Rotary membership or other information concerning the Rotary can be
found at www.rotary.org with the most frequently asked questions. -John Wade, District Membership Chair

District Simplified Grant Applications Now Being Sought Deadline is September 24
Full details are available on the District Website
Now's the time for
your Club to plan a worthwhile humanitarian project and apply for a
District
Simplified Grant. Humanitarian
projects
which improve the lives of the less fortunate -- especially
projects dealing with hunger, health and literacy-will
be given special consideration. The
deadline for receipt of applications
is Friday, September 24, 2010.
How much is available? District
Simplified Grants are awarded to a Rotary Club on a $1 for $1 matching
basis -
to promote humanitarian efforts within the Club's local community, and
in
special instances, in international projects. Brisk
competition is anticipated for this year's limited funding of $15,000. Single Club DSG awards will be capped at a
maximum of $2,000, and multiple Club project DSG
awards capped at a maximum of $3,000 each. That is, a single Club DSG award of $2,000 when
matched with the Club's funds on a 50/50 basis, results in a $4,000 DSG project. Similarly, a multi-Club DSG award of $3,000 matched
on a 50/50 basis results in a $6,000 project.
The fine print: Projects
must be controlled by and substantially involve the "hands-on" participation
of Rotarians. Clubs must apply for a DSG consideration using onlythe current TRF-approved DSG application form. (Download the form here) Early
submission is advised as sometimes applications must be returned for corrections
or modification and only those applications which are fully complete and
correct as of the deadline can be considered by the Grants Subcommittee.
For questions: Contact Dennis J. Dolan,
District Grants Subcommittee Chair at djdolan2005@bellsouth.net or by phone at (502) 327-6008.

Add Weekly Rotary Foundation Thoughts to Your Club Meeting

The new list of Weekly Rotary Foundation Thoughts is now available. This collection of
brief,
thematic commentaries is an effective tool to help Rotarians learn how
the Foundation is Doing Good in the World and to broaden participation
in the
EREY effort. Club presidents are encouraged
to open each meeting with a Foundation thought, ideally rotating the
reading among club members. Here is a sample: "When you hear the number 963 million, it's difficult
to get your head around it. But for the 963 million people who live with
chronic hunger, it is not something they try to imagine but something
they
must try to survive. Malnutrition is the largest single contributor to
disease; it imposes crushing economic burdens on the developing world.
The
Rotary Foundation is working to alleviate hunger and malnutrition. Many
of the Matching Grants that the Foundation funds are for projects
working
toward the end of world hunger. Make your annual gift today." |
World Polio Day: October 24
World Polio Day is an ideal time for your club or district to
raise awareness about polio and garner support for
eradication efforts. To share Rotary's commitment to a polio-free world with local media, use
the PolioPlus Headliner Kit, which
contains a sample opinion piece, letter to the editor, and several
press releases, all of which can be customized to
reflect your involvement in the PolioPlus program. Find additional
resources at www.rotary.org. |
October is Vocational Service Month During
October, Rotarians are encouraged to initiate yearlong vocational
service activities, ranging from Rotary club presentations to awards to
community projects.
