Rotary District 6710
August 2010
Volume 2, Issue 2
A Note From the Governor

Greetings! DG Woody Northup

By now, you are well into the process of making your club Bigger, Better, and Bolder, as our RI President Ray Klinginsmith has asked us to do. Of course the first word of that message is Bigger. As it happens, August is Membership and Extension month in the Rotary calendar.

Why is it important to make our clubs bigger? Let's count the ways.
  1. The good we do as Rotarians is worth sharing with as many people as possible.
  2. As bigger clubs, we can be more effective in our community.
  3. As we get bigger, we are a more attractive audience for guest speakers.
  4. When we share Rotary with others, we also share our fixed expenses with them.
  5. Clubs lose about 10% of their members every year, so attracting new members is a must.
As I travel around the district, I am struck by the effect each of our clubs has on its community. There are people out there who would love to have a chance to make a difference in their communities and world the way Rotarians do each and every day of the year. Each of you knows at least one of those persons. Do that friend a favor-share Rotary with him or her. Neither one of you will ever regret it. And always remember that people join Rotary for only one reason: they are asked to join by someone already in Rotary. Be that person today.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Woody Northup
District 6710 Governor
August is Membership and Extension Month

Recruiting new members and starting new clubs are important to Rotary.  Membership is always a hot topic at any Rotary gathering.  August is Membership and Extension Month and a perfect time for your club to examine its membership practices.  Are you, as a club leader, encouraging your club members to each take responsibility for recruiting new members?  Do you provide your members with tips, ideas, and tools to recruit new members?  Visit the RI website and browse the membership resources, and be sure to share the resources with your fellow Rotarians.  Consider purchasing Rotary Basics (available from shop.rotary.org) to give out to prospective members.  Create new member packets or implement a new member orientation program.  Organize a recruitment competition among members.  Select several club members to attend the upcoming District Membership and Foundation seminars. There is no end to the ideas for membership recruitment.  The resources are out there, so make sure you are taking advantage of them and putting them to use.

Browse www.rotary.org for resources, or contact the District Membership Chair John Wade at John.Wade@goodwillky.org.

Club extension - chartering of new Rotary Clubs - is also important.  While we have 58 clubs in District 6710, there are still areas in our district where no Rotary clubs have been established.  Take a look at a map of our district to see where we have room to grow.  Do you have acquaintances in a community in our District where no Rotary club yet exists?  Contact District Extension Chair Kevin Mays at kmays@hollandcpas.com to discuss the possibilities.

Rotary and the World Equestrian Games
Rotary WEG

By now you know that Rotary has forged a unique relationship with the public concessionaire for the World Equestrian Games. Rotarians, along their families and friends, will be the primary work force serving food and performing cashier duties at the games' public concession sites. The money we earn will go to the Rotary Foundation, including for Polio Plus. Based on projections, we estimate that our efforts can earn between $300,000 - $400,000 to help us all put "Service Above Self" and "End Polio Now."  And what a great way to raise money for this lifesaving effort!

Time is running out and we need to recruit many more volunteers immediately!

The Games take place September 25 - October 10.  There are two shifts each day: 7:00am - 3:00pm and 11:30am - 7:30pm.

Each club needs to recruit Rotarians, friends, family members, or anyone over the age of 18 to sign up to work one or more shifts.  Non-Rotarians can list the name of the Rotarian who recruited them so that your club gets credit.  Each volunteer will receive an additional free pass for another day at the Games as a spectator.

To sign up, go to www.Rotary-WEG.org and follow the website instructions.

Need a place to stay?
Several Rotarians in Louisville and surrounding areas are willing to host Rotarians in their homes during the games.  This is a perfect opportunity for those clubs located father away from Lexington.  For information on home hosting, or to offer to host Rotarians in your home, contact Mary Kathryn at mk@rotarydistirct6710.org.

Promote WEG at a Rotary Meeting
You have a captive audience of Rotarians each week at your club meeting.  Encourage members to sign up while they are at the meeting!  Download a paper registration form that you can copy and hand out at your club meeting.  Remember to encourage Rotarians to invite family and friends to volunteer as well.

Download a flyer to distribute to employees or other friends.

Recap: Rotaract Leadership Training Seminar

On July 24th and 25th a group of 38 Rotaract members and Rotarians gathered on the campus of Bellarmine University in Louisville, KY for the District 6710 Rotaract Leadership Training Seminar. RLTS is an intensive one-weekend training program for Rotaract leaders hosted by District 6710.  The extensive curriculum was devised by seasoned Rotaract leaders with international experience in conjunction with Rotarian trainers from the Rotary Leadership Institute and Rotary Mid-South PETS.

RLTS Attendees

The training seminar included an address from District Governor Woody Northup. Training sessions included information about Rotary and Rotaract 101, Practical Public Speaking, and the Rotary-Rotaract relationships to name a few.

The training session provided a valuable opportunity for Rotaract members and Rotarians to share thoughts and ideas in order to strengthen club leadership.

Those involved with planning and implementing the seminar are looking forward to a bigger, better, and bolder Rotaract Leadership Training Seminar in 2011.
District Simplified Grant Applications Now Being Sought
Deadline is September 24

Full details are available on the District Website

Now's the time for your Club to plan a worthwhile humanitarian project and apply for a District Simplified Grant.  Humanitarian projects which improve the lives of the less fortunate -- especially projects dealing with hunger, health and literacy-will be given special consideration.  The deadline for receipt of applications is Friday, September 24, 2010

Grant funding now available! How much is available? District Simplified Grants are awarded to a Rotary Club on a $1 for $1 matching basis - to promote humanitarian efforts within the Club's local community, and in special instances, in international projects.  Brisk competition is anticipated for this year's limited funding of $15,000.  Single Club DSG awards will be capped at a maximum of $2,000, and multiple Club project DSG awards capped at a maximum of $3,000 each. That is, a single Club DSG award of $2,000 when matched with the Club's funds on a 50/50 basis, results in a $4,000 DSG project.  Similarly, a multi-Club DSG award of $3,000 matched on a 50/50 basis results in a $6,000 project.

The fine print: Projects must be controlled by and substantially involve the "hands-on" participation of Rotarians.  Clubs must apply for a DSG consideration using onlythe current TRF-approved DSG application form. (Download the form here)  Early submission is advised as sometimes applications must be returned for corrections or modification and only those applications which are fully complete and correct as of the deadline can be considered by the Grants Subcommittee.

For questions: Contact Dennis J. Dolan, District Grants Subcommittee Chair at djdolan2005@bellsouth.net or by phone at (502) 327-6008.

Looking Ahead: September is New Generations Month

We've all heard it said that today's youth and young adults are the future, the next generation, a new generation.  This is true for Rotary as well.  Today's youth and young adults are tomorrow's community and business leaders, parents, and Rotarians.  That's why we underscore the importance of of Rotary involvement in shaping the lives of youth and young adults with September as New Generations Month.

Now that New Generations is the 5th Avenue of Service, Rotary's commitment to youth and young adults has even more emphasis.

The Rotary Manual of Procedure says, "It is the responsibility of each Rotarian to prepare the New Generations - all young people up to the age of 30 - by improving their life skills to ensure a
better future, while recognizing the diversity of their needs. All clubs and districts are encouraged to undertake projects that support the fundamental needs of the New Generations: health, human values, education, and self-development."

In District 6710 we support youth and young adults through programs such as Rotaract for our young professionals and college students, Interact, RYLA, and the Speech Contest for our high school students, District and local scholarships, and the many, many projects of individual clubs.

How does your club support youth and young adults?  How can you highlight New Generations Month?  Check out some of the resources below.
