A Note From the Governor
Greetings!
Welcome to a new Rotary Year!
First of all, let me say a
hearty thank you to all who have served your clubs at the board or officer
level for the past year. I want to give special thanks, however, to the
past-year Presidents of the clubs, and to our own Chuck Cicchella, outgoing
District Governor, for a job well-done, and for all the time and effort they
have spent in the last year on behalf of Rotary.
Now it's time to welcome the
new directors and officers for the coming year. These newly-minted Presidents,
Secretaries, Treasurers, and Directors have volunteered to carry the leadership
torch for your club for the next year. I am asking that you give these leaders
your full support for the coming year.
How can you do that? There
are a number of ways. They will be looking for your help in doing the
following: -
Recruiting new members for
your club
-
Raising money for The Rotary
Foundation to sustain the good things Rotary and your club does in the world.
- Supporting the community
projects your club implements.
- Supporting Rotary
International's great quest to wipe out the last vestiges of polio through its
Polio Plus program.
- Supporting youth-related
projects like Rotaract, Interact, and RYLA.
- Supporting your club and
district social functions, including attending the District Conference in Nashville, TN.
As your new District
Governor, I am also asking for your help in accomplishing these worthy goals. I
am looking forward to visiting your club in the near future, and to a wonderful
year. Our new Rotary International President Ray Klinginsmith has asked that
our clubs be Bigger, Better, and Bolder. I will try to lend my hand to make
that happen for you.
Yours in Rotary Service, Woody Northup 6710 District Governor |

Rotary and the World Equestrian Games Rotarians, you
have probably already heard
from our club leadership that there is a huge opportunity for your club
in the
near future. The World Equestrian Games is coming to the Horse
Park in Lexington, KY
this fall. Rotarians from our District 6710 and our sister District 6740
in the
eastern part of the Commonwealth have been asked to staff the concession
booths
at the games in return for a large donation to Rotary. This is a chance
for
your club to earn money to satisfy your Polio Plus obligation or your
Rotary
Foundation obligation. In addition, for each shift you work, you will
receive a
day-long pass good for one of the days of the Games. Rotarians from
clubs near
the Horse Park will provide a place to stay for
those who don't live near enough to drive over and back in one day. Go
to
www.rotary-weg.org to sign up,
or see your club president or president-elect for more details. Please
help Rotary
do more good in the world. Remember, we can only build communities and
bridge
continents through the actions of individual Rotarians. Don't hesitate,
act now! |

Rotaract Leadership Training Seminar
Rotaract is one of the great programs of Rotary, and
healthy,
vibrant Rotaract clubs can have yield many
benefits. But, a strong Rotaract club
doesn't just happen by chance. It takes skilled leaders who have an
understanding of how Rotaract and Rotary work.
To
help with this, the Rotaract leadership
of District 6710, along
with several Rotarians, is
planning our second multi-district "Rotaract Leadership Training
Seminar," and we would like
to invite all Rotaractors and Rotarian liaisons from District 6710 to
attend. Last year we had participants from 6 district and 5 states.
When: July 24-25, 2010 Where: On the campus of Bellarmine
University in Louisville, KY Cost: FREE for participants from District
6710 (registration, most meals, and materials) Who: Any Rotaractors, interested
Rotarians, or Rotaract advisors
are
invited to attend.
Registration and details are on our website: www.rotarydistrict6710.org/go/rlts
Louisville
is within easy driving distance from anywhere in the district, and we have arranged
for a discounted rate with a nearby hotel for those coming from out of
town. Be sure to check out the lodging info on the website as the booking deadline is July 8.
Your
Rotaractors may need a bit of financial support to attend to help
with the
cost lodging and transportation. Did you know that Rotary Clubs
are supposed to help pay for their Rotaractors to attend training? As the District is covering the bulk of the
costs, we hope sponsoring Rotary Clubs will be willing to
help
send your Rotaractors to this training. This
would be a
worthwhile expenditure!
Please visit the website at www.rotarydistrict6710.org/go/rltsfor more info. While the Rotaract Clubs in our District have been aware of this event for some
time, please follow up with them to make sure someone will attend. For
those Rotaract
clubs that are university-based, they can certainly still attend even
though they may be out of school for the summer.
Please contact
Mary Kathryn DeLodder at rotaract@rotarydistrict6710.org or (502) 592-0930
if
you have any questions.

Building the Future with Interact Interact is the oldest of activities under the newest Avenue of Service:
New Generations. Our District Interact clubs are the most realistic way to build toward
RYLA and the Speech Contest each year. If Interact helps high schoolers
catch the Rotary spirit, then our Rotaract clubs are waiting for the
18-30 year-olds to continue as the next developmental step in service.
Over the summer months, we have an opportunity to think about how we
want to help support our Interact clubs with both shorter and longer
range vistas in mind. By the onset of the next academic year,
faculty/staff Interact advisors can plan for involvements according to
each of our situations.
If you are a Rotarian who serves as an Interact advisor, either initiate
or join your club's New Generations Committee. If you are an advisor
but not a Rotarian, ask your sponsoring Rotary club(s) how you can stay
in link and in sync with the New Generations Committee(s) related to
your club. There's a future to pursue by bridging this connection.
I will be happy to help you with ideas and information if I can.
-C. Renee Rust-Yarmuth Interact Chair, District 6710 |
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards The dates have changed but the location is the same. District 6710's Rotary Youth Leadership Award
(RYLA) camp will be held September 23-26, 2010 at the Wendell
H. Ford Regional
Training Center
in Greenville, KY. The past two RYLA camps have been held in May
during Memorial Day weekend. We are
moving to September in hopes of getting more Rotarians involved. RYLA 2010 will have a cowboy theme and our slogan is
"Leadership the Cowboy Way." We will be asking clubs to sponsor high school freshmen and
sophomores to attend the three day camp. Cost per student is $175 by September 1 and $200 from September 1 to
September 15. You can find more
information on RYLA on the District 6710 website and on the District 6710 RYLA Facebook page. We would love to come present a program on RYLA for your
club. If interested, contact PDG Kay
Sharon, RYLA District Chair, at 270-723-1899 or ksharon1@comcast.net. |
Henderson Rotaractor Becomes District Rotaract Representative
In Rotaract, activities at the District level are overseen by a Rotarian who serves as the chair and a Rotaractor who holds the title of District Rotaract Representative (DRR). For several years, Mary Kathryn DeLodder has served in this position. As of July 1, Henderson Rotaract member Megan Mortis will be serving in this role. While Mary Kathryn will still be very involved in Rotaract at the District level, Megan will be your primary contact. Megan is a Communications graduate from
University of
Southern Indiana and is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Public
Administration from the same university. She is employed with St.
Anthony's
Hospice as Community Outreach/Volunteer Coordinator. Megan has been a member of the Henderson Rotaract
club for 3
years where she has served as Professional Development chair and currently
serves as
Community Service chair. She was also a GSE team member to Brazil in 2009.
During
this past year, Megan helped organize and plan the Rotaract Leadership
conference and served as Vice-Chair on the District Rotaract Committee.
Recently, she was part of the delegation from District 6710 to attend the Rotary Convention in Montreal, Canada. Megan
is actively involved in many community projects including Habitat for
Humanity,
Jr. Achievement, Henderson Community Theater, and children's ministry at
Crossroads Christian Church which she is a member. She looks forward to serving as the District
Rotaract
Representative and will always keep the Rotary motto of "service above
self" in
mind. You can contact Megan at mmortis@sahky.org.

Rotary Goes to New Orleans! The
next Rotary International Convention will be held in New Orleans, May
21-25, 2011. New Orleans
is steeped is history and mystery. When you walk the French Quarter,
you
can sense the ghosts of people who lived there hundreds of years ago.
The
city holds memories of Native Americans, French, Spanish, African, Irish
and
German settlers. Their stories include gracious living, southern
hospitality,
pirates, voodoo and treasures - still to be found on every street of the
French Quarter. The
past influences have produced a modern city accented with iron work of
the
early artists, foods that reflect a mixture of cultures and glimpses of
exotic
courtyards from another era. The
blending of experiences over those hundreds of years has produced a new
culture
that's unique to New Orleans.
Here,
you will experience a welcome ambiance and an elegance of artfulness in
the
architecture, the food, the music -- and in the people. Come
and experience Rotary in New Orleans! You can register now at www.rotary.org. |

2011 to 3 July 2011 and the German team will come to Kentucky from 14
April

Frankfort respectively. A heartfelt thanks is extended to PDG Hugh McShane, the outgoing GSE chair, for his tremendous service!
