A Note From the Governor

Greetings! DG Chuck Cicchella

June spells the end of the 2009-2010 Rotary year. A time for wrapping things up and passing things forward as your Governor proudly becomes what they call a PDG and our Club Presidents become a PCP (it almost sounds like a plumbing issue).

District activity wise, the year concluded with our District Conference held in Santa Claus, Indiana, the site of Holiday World and Santa's Lodge. Our conference highlighted our youth and our commitment to them as the Rotary Council on Legislation has now established that New Generations has become our fifth avenue of service joining as you know Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service, and International Service.

I know myself and every Club President who served during this year hopes that their leadership was a benefit to  Rotary , our communities, our clubs, and our district - the hoped for result is that whatever the endeavor we were able to make a difference and move things to the next level of success.

My hat is off to the Rotary Club of Murray and to Roger Reichmuth,
Murray President Roger Reichmuth, PE Jayne Crisp, and DG Chuck.
Murray Club receives Best in District
the Club President, on being recognized at the conference with the "Best In District  Award " and receiving  the Centennial Bell for this year.

Many other clubs were also recognized for their outstanding commitments to service and I truly wish to extend to them our deepest gratitude for a job well done.

June is Rotary Fellowships Month
Rotary Fellowships Logo Rotary was founded on fellowship, a concept that has been expanded internationally through the Rotary Fellowships, groups that bring together
members from different countries and cultures to enjoy a shared interest. In addition to fostering lifelong friendships, Rotary Fellowships keep members active in Rotary, sustaining their interest and further inspiring commitment.

The nearly one hundred Rotary Fellowships encompass a variety of vocations and avocations, ranging from sports and hobbies to professional interests - all of which serve as a way to extend international fellowship, friendship, and service. In addition to offering
members an opportunity to share their passion for a particular interest with like-minded Rotarians, many individual fellowship groups enable members to use their hobbies or skills to serve others. For example, the Fellowship of Canoeing Rotarians has organized cleanups of polluted rivers, and members of the International Computer Users Fellowship of Rotarians conduct training sessions for Rotarians and other people in their community on how to use electronic media. Members of the International Fellowship of Rotarians with Repaired Hearts - or the "Zipper Club," as they call themselves - have provided life-saving surgeries to disadvantaged children with severe heart defects.

Do your club members know about Rotary Fellowships?  Would some of them enjoy membership in one of these groups?  Consider a program in June that showcases Rotary Fellowships.

District Conference Makes Contribution to Feeding America, Kentucky's Heartland

Rotarians never miss an opportunity for service, and the recent District Conference was no exception.  Attendees were invited to bring canned goods or make a cash donation, and all proceeds, which totaled $350 and 288 lbs of food, were donated to Feeding America, Kentucky's Heartland.  Below is a note received from the organization:

Food collected"On behalf of Feeding America, Kentucky's Heartland, I would like to thank you and all parties involved in supporting this food bank at the recent Rotary [District] Conference.  I commend the Rotary Clubs across Kentucky that support us in alleviating hunger in Kentucky.

Each year, Feeding America, Kentucky's Heartland continues to advance its mission of serving those in need.  Through our programs such as Donated Food/Grocery Distribution, Senior Commodities, BackPack, Kids Cafe, etc., we have seen many lives changed for the better, not only in Hardin County, but surrounding central and south central counties.

The goal of our food bank is to prevent anyone from going to bed hungry in our 42-county service area.  With the help of food and monetary donations from supporters like Rotary, we continue to see improvements in hunger relief.

Thanks again for your generous support of our efforts.  We look forward to working with you in the future.

Best wishes,
Tami Delaney, Development Director"

District6710 Meet-up In Montreal

Canadian FlagAttention traveling Rotarians!  Are you headed to the RI Convention in Montreal in just a few days?  If so, please e-mail Mary Kathryn at mk@rotarydistrict6710.org and let her know.  We'd like to try and arrange a meet-up during the convention. See you there!
Rotary and the World Equestrian Games
Rotary WEG

Rotarians, you have probably already heard from our club leadership that there is a huge opportunity for your club in the near future. The World Equestrian Games is coming to the Horse Park in Lexington, KY this fall.

Rotarians from our District 6710 and our sister District 6740 in the eastern part of the Commonwealth have been asked to staff the concession booths at the games in return for a large donation to Rotary. This is a chance for your club to earn money to satisfy your Polio Plus obligation or your Rotary Foundation obligation. In addition, for each shift you work, you will receive a day-long pass good for one of the days of the Games.

Rotarians from clubs near the Horse Park will provide a place to stay for those who don't live near enough to drive over and back in one day.

Go to www.rotary-weg.org to sign up, or see your club president or president-elect for more details. Please help Rotary do more good in the world. Remember, we can only build communities and bridge continents through the actions of individual Rotarians. Don't hesitate, act now!

Council approves fifth Avenue of Service
By Ryan Hyland - Rotary International News

Representatives at the 2010 Council on Legislation approved an enactment 28 April to add a fifth Avenue of Service: New Generations.

After adopting an amendment to change the name from Youth Service, as originally proposed, to New Generations, the Council narrowly supported the addition to article 5 of the Standard Rotary Club Constitution. The 263-250 vote was received by surprised gasps and applause after a short debate.

New Generations joins Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service, and International Service as the foundation of club activity. Before starting a project, Rotarians are asked to think broadly about how their club and its members could contribute within each avenue.

"It's a significant change - a historic day in Rotary," said Council Chair Mark Daniel Maloney. "Rotarians have always strongly supported youth activities even though they were never part of the four Avenues of Service. I think this strengthens our commitment."

The Avenue of New Generations recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults involved in leadership development activities, community and international service projects, and exchange programs that enrich and foster world peace and cultural understanding.  Read more...
Rotaract Leadership Training Seminar

Rotaract is one of the great programs of Rotaract LogoRotary, and healthy, vibrant Rotaract clubs can have yield many benefits.  But, a strong Rotaract club doesn't just happen by chance.  It takes skilled leaders who have an understanding of how Rotaract and Rotary work.

To help with this, the Rotaract leadership of District 6710, along with several Rotarians, is planning our second multi-district "Rotaract Leadership Training Seminar," and we would like to invite all Rotaractors and Rotarian liaisons from District 6710 to attend.  Last year we had participants from 6 district and 5 states.

When: July 24-25, 2010
Where: On the campus of Bellarmine University in Louisville, KY
Cost: FREE for participants from District 6710 (registration, most meals, and materials)
Who: Any Rotaractors, interested Rotarians, or Rotaract advisors are invited to attend.

Registration and details are on our website: www.rotarydistrict6710.org/go/rlts

Louisville is within easy driving distance from anywhere in the district, and we have arranged for a discounted rate with a nearby hotel for those coming from out of town.  Be sure to check out the lodging info on the website as the booking deadline is July 8.

Your Rotaractors may need a bit of financial support to attend to help with the cost lodging and transportation. Did you know that Rotary Clubs are supposed to help pay for their Rotaractors to attend training?  As the District is covering the bulk of the costs, we hope sponsoring Rotary Clubs will be willing to help send your Rotaractors to this training. This would be a worthwhile expenditure!

Please visit the website at www.rotarydistrict6710.org/go/rltsfor more info.  While the Rotaract Clubs in our District have been aware of this event for some time, please follow up with them to make sure someone will attend.  For those Rotaract clubs that are university-based, they can certainly still attend even though they may be out of school for the summer.

Please contact Mary Kathryn DeLodder at rotaract@rotarydistrict6710.orgor (502) 592-0930 if you have any questions.
The Final Hour

Fred and Marge HahnWhile we recognize "The Final Inch" as the emphasis in Polio Eradication, we are closing in on the final hour of opportunity to contribute to the 2009-2010 Annual Giving (EREY) and Endowment (Permanent Fund) Giving to the Rotary Foundation.

In the coming month, Annual Giving is critical. The annual return on giving will be used for three year for RI Administrative needs. At that juncture, the Future Vision Plan will be fully employed for all Rotary Districts and Clubs for the first time.

Some of us in the world are in the midst of significant "reversals" and most are concerned about the economic volatility. However, the needs in our global community continue. We as Rotarians uniformly respect these needs. Even more important than the amount we give is the challenge for everyone to contribute something.

"Anyone who thinks they are too small to make a difference has never been bitten by a mosquito." Hundreds of millions of people are surviving in this world on a dollar or two a day. How many can you help? Don't miss this opportunity to make a difference.

Frederick W. Hahn, Jr.
RI Director 2009-2011
Rotary Day at the UN 2010: Advance Notice
UN Logo

The next Rotary Day at the UN will be held on Saturday, November 6, at United Nations Headquarters in New York. This is a unique program for Rotary and UN leaders to meet, discuss current programs where we are collaborating, such as with adult illiteracy and Polio Plus, and identify potential areas of future cooperation. Also, it is a great opportunity to spend a weekend in one of the world's greatest cities: New York. Registration information will be forthcoming in the next newsletter. Don't miss it.

RI Board Lowers Interact AgeInteract Logo
By Ryan Hyland - Rotary International News

To help promote the growth of Interact , the RI Board has agreed to lower the age of eligibility for Interactors from 14 to 12.

"This is another opportunity to expand the family of Rotary," says J.R. Thompson, a member of the RI Interact Committee and the Rotary Club of Rocky Ford, Colorado, USA. "In my personal experience working with young people, they will put out the effort to reach a reasonable level of expectations. I found this is just as true of a 12-year-old as it is of a 14-year-old."

Each year, Interact clubs are asked to complete at least two community service projects, one of which should further international understanding and goodwill. Through these efforts, Interactors develop a network of friendships with local and overseas clubs.

The Board's policy for Interact states that the sponsor Rotary club must cooperate with school authorities in supervising the Interact club, and that the Interact club is subject to all the regulations that apply to other student organizations and extracurricular activities at the school.

If the school where an Interact club is based includes students younger than age 12 or older than 18, they may also be members, the policy states. So, if a school serves students ages 10-13, 10-year-olds could also be members.  Read more...
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards

RYLA LogoThe dates have changed but the location is the same.  District 6710's Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) camp will be held September 23-26, 2010 at the Wendell H. Ford Regional Training Center in Greenville, KY.  The past two RYLA camps have been held in May during Memorial Day weekend.  We are moving to September in hopes of getting more Rotarians involved.

RYLA 2010 will have a cowboy theme and our slogan is "Leadership the Cowboy Way."  We will be asking clubs to sponsor high school freshmen and sophomores to attend the three day camp. Cost per student is $175 by September 1 and $200 from September 1 to September 15.  You can find more information on RYLA on the District 6710 website and on the District 6710 RYLA Facebook page.
