A Note From the Governor

Greetings! DG Chuck Cicchella

Happy Holidays!

Well, current club presidents, it's that wonderful time of the year where we pay particular attention to friends & family and the true meaning of life's great adventure.

It's also the mid-year point in service to our individual Rotary clubs and time to look at the bigger picture - it's time to  take a hard look as to where you are in advancing towards your annual club goals. Here are some of the questions you should ask yourself:
  • Membership - are you on target for the Presidential Citation? You need a net one new member over your prior year enrollment in this category.
    • Are you conducting a new member orientation?
  • Money - are you fulfilling your pledge to support the Rotary International Foundation?  Is your club on track to meet your EREY objective (an average of $ 100 committed from "every member of your club every year")?   Be sure to check our District Global Award requirements.
    • Does your club have in place a program to raise dollars for the Polio Plus program?
    • Are your fund raising plans in place and on target for your local, regional, and international projects?
  • Is your club organizational structure in place and in reasonably close alignment to the "Rotary Club Leadership Plan?"
    • Are you sending new up and coming members to some of the RLI (Rotary Leadership Institute) programs to better help their understanding of Rotary?
  • Have you sent in your "Mid-Year Chronicle" article and pictures to the Rotary District?
  • Are you seeking input from your members who are planning on attending the District Conference in May as to children and spouses willing to serve as meeting hosts in one capacity or another - and sending this information in to the District?  Are you making your plans to attend?
  • Are your weekly meetings doing the job by providing timely information and exciting programs to club members?
  • Have you given thought and encouraged members of your club to consider attending the Rotary International Conference being held June 20-23, 2010 in Montreal, Canada?
  • Are you fulfilling your long term commitments to programs such as Interact, Rotaract, RYLA and other long term local programs to which your club is committed?
I would venture to say if you are "batting well" in the above categories you are in essence on target toward having a successful year!

God bless you for all that you are doing in Rotary and may you and yours enjoy a wonderful holiday season - Merry Christmas !

Chuck
Charles E. Cicchella
6710 District Governor
December is Family Month
John KenneyFrom RI President John Kenny

My fellow Rotarians:

The idea of the family of Rotary is a simple one, and one that we celebrate every December during Family Month. Every Rotarian is part of the Rotary family - but our family is much larger than just our 1.2 million members. The family of Rotary includes every one of the men, women, and children who are involved in our work: the spouses and children of our members, our Rotary Foundation program participants and alumni, and all of those who are part of our programs, in the tens of thousands of Rotary communities around the world.

The youngest generation of the Rotary family is composed of our Rotaract clubs and Interact clubs, the participants in our Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program, our Ambassadorial Scholars, and our more than 8,000 Rotary Youth Exchange students every year. As in any family, our youth are our brightest promise for the future. Of course, it is my sincere wish that many of these young people go on to become Rotarians in good time. But Rotary is a part of them even today - and they are a part of us.

Rotary Peace Initiative: 2011 Rotary World Peace Fellow ProgramPeace Centers Logo

The Rotary Foundation announces the integration of its peace initiatives:  (1)  Rotary's World Peace Fellowships program for master's degrees and (2) Rotary's professional development certificate program are now folded into one program.  This change allows applicants to apply simultaneously for both options offered at the seven Rotary Centers around the world.

District 6710 has had two Rotary World Peace Fellows--WILLIAM DANIEL STURGEON who completed a master's degree program at International Christian University in Japan and is currently a Rotarian in Washington DC, and RUSSELL VANDENBROUCKE, chair of the Department of Theatre Arts, University of Louisville, who in 2007 completed a professional development program in Thailand.  Superb candidates for superb programs!

This is the call by the Rotary District 6710 World Peace Fellows Committee for applications for these programs for which study takes place in 2011-12.  The deadline for receipt by the committee of complete applications for these programs is May 1, 2010.  A complete application includes a sponsoring Rotary Club endorsement.

Submission of application materials and requests for information should be made to:

Event Generates Funds, Positive PR for Rotary

November 18, 2009 - The Danville and Harrodsburg Rotary Clubs teamed up to raise almost $14,000 for Camp Horsin' Around.  The clubs invited Michael Angelo Caruso to speak on "Giving Remarkable Customer Service."  As a fellow Rotarian, Michael is willing to do this for clubs around the country at no cost other than his travel.  Country music star, Eddie Montgomery, was very generous in allowing Rotary to use his new restaurant, Eddie Montgomery's Steakhouse, as the venue.   Eddie and his wife, Tracy, also donated all of the food for the event!   On the Friday before the event, would-be buyers actually had to be turned away because the restaurant Rotary Fundraiserreached its' maximum seating capacity (277).  Afterwards, the reviews were fabulous!  Attendees loved the speaker, the food and the restaurant.  This was such a positive event - it was great to raise so much money for a worthy cause and it was great PR for Rotary.

The cause, Camp Horsin' Around (CHA), serves children from throughout Kentucky and surrounding states with illnesses including cancer, diabetes, asthma, sickle cell anemia, kidney disease, AIDs, and heart ailments.  CHA will offer a family camping center as well as support services for families.  And, through collaborations with the University of Kentucky's Children's Hospital and Hospice of the Bluegrass, the camp will offer special programs for children with obesity issues, for those who have lost a loved one to terminal illness and for siblings of ill children.

Rotary Foundation Notes
From District Rotary Foundation Chair PDG Dave Weller

NoRotary Fundraiserw is the time to send in all contribution dollars to the Rotary Foundation collected in the first half of 2009.

If you are collecting dollars on behalf of the Foundation through the club dues statement or in direct contributions from members;
you must send the dollars into the Rotary Foundation in December for your club member to receive a tax deduction.

The IRS recognizes The Rotary Foundation as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization which creates the tax credit for contributors.

All contributors should receive credit by the club sending in transmittal forms to The Rotary Foundation for their members donations.  All transmittal forms should include member numbers to make sure your members are properly credited for their donations.  Send contribution dollars and transmittal forms to The Rotary Foundation at the appropriate address listed on the form.

Please check "Annual Programs Fund Share" to contribute to the annual programs and to fund District Simplified Grant and other local programs.

For individual contributions send in this transmittal with the contribution so your member receives appropriate tax credit:
