A Note From the Governor
Greetings!
On October 6th at the Majestic Steak House in Draffenville, KY our District
will be conducting the third in a series of five Rotary Foundation and
Membership Seminars. Dave Weller, our District Foundation Chairman and Roland
Blahnik, our District Membership Chairman do an outstanding job providing essential information on these two highly important focus areas.
On Membership it is my hope that every club will seek to
have a net gain of at least one member over their membership of last year. I urge our Club
Presidents to keep the need for recruiting new members a high priority and worthy of mention at each club meeting. I just love some of
the responses that came from our recent District Strategic Planning Survey when
Rotarians were asked to complete the sentence, "I am a Rotarian
because ....."
"It makes me feel good about myself" "I want to serve above myself" "I love to make great things
happen for those less fortunate"
.... and
then I really like this last one - "an opportunity to interact with the wisdom of age and the energy of
youth"
Is membership
important? You bet!! ChuckCharles E.

October is Vocational Service Month
Vocational Service, one of Rotary's Avenues of Service, encourages
Rotarians to serve others through their professions and to practice
high ethical standards. Rotarians, as business leaders, share skills
and expertise through their vocations and inspire others in the
process. Observed each October, Vocational Service Month spotlights
Rotary club projects related to this avenue, offering an opportunity
for clubs and districts to use their professional skills in service
projects.
Vocational Service focuses on:- Adherence to and promotion of the highest ethical standards in all occupations, including fair treatment of employers, employees, associates, competitors, and the public.
- The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, not just those that are pursued by Rotarians.
- The contribution of your vocational talents to solving the problems of society and meeting the needs of the community.
During October, Rotarians are encouraged to focus on this important avenue of Rotary service. Discussions on vocational service can lead to projects that not only develop the ethical consciousness and vocational skills of Rotarians but also the talents within their communities. Vocational Service Month is an opportunity to begin year-long vocational service activities, ranging from Rotary discussions to awards to community projects.

Time Running Out to Submit District Simplified Grants
Deadline is October 16, 2009
Now's
the time for Rotary Clubs to seek out worthwhile projects for which District
Simplified Grant (DSG) funds can be sought.
The deadline for submitting DSG applications is Friday October 16, 2009.
Check out these links for more information about DSG Terms & Conditions, District 6710 Application,
and DSG Help and Hints.
How large
are DSG awards? While the past is no
guarantee of future award sizes, recent grant amounts have generally ranged
from several hundred to a couple thousand dollars. In general, Rotary Club contributions have
provided about half of typical project costs, i.e., local Rotary Clubs
(individually or in combination with another organization) tend to contribute roughly
half of a project cost. Sometimes,
project costs have been shared three ways, between a Rotary Club, another second
qualifying entity, and the DSG. The
total 2009-10 allocation for District #6710 is $14,000. Funds are limited, so
submit your application soon.
The Fine Print: All applications must be on an official District 6710 Application form and received by District Grants Committee Chair, Dennis J. Dolan, not
later than Friday October 16th, 2009. The completed DSG application and all
supporting documentation should be sent- preferably by email to: rotarydennis6710@bellsouth.net (Please
make reference to "DSG Application" in the email subject line.) If sent by
regular mail, address to: Dennis J.
Dolan, DSG Application, 2400 Chadford Way, Louisville, KY 40222.

District Strategic Plan Updated
Four years ago, leaders of Rotary District
6710 developed a long range strategic plan.
This plan has been reviewed and modified twice by subsequent committee
groups, with the most recent review taking place on September 19 in Elizabethtown. This recent meeting was attended by 18 district leaders: Terry Shockley, Kay Sharon, Dave Weller, Vickie Elrod, Terry Chambers, Ann Robertson, Woody Northup, Patty Ray, Mary Kathryn DeLodder, Bob Anderson, Hugh McShane, Stan Klausing, Loretta Williams, Tom Diener, Vernon Gantt, Roger Reichmuth, Rick Baumgardner, and Chuck Cicchella.
The purpose
of this plan is to give direction and continuity to the services the District
performs for its clubs. Our hope is that
District 6710 will continuously and incrementally improve each year eventually
becoming one of the premier Districts of Rotary International.

recruiting new members. Be sure to view the article earlier in this newsletter for the dates and locations of remaining seminars. You don't want to miss out.
