A Note From the Governor
Greetings!
Well, September has arrived, for all of our youngsters
school has begun, and we in Rotary will
be concluding the first quarter of our
2009-10 Rotary year.
This year in my
visit to Rotary Clubs throughout our District, I've been emphasizing the
"M&M's" of Rotary - "Membership
& Money," "Methods &
Mechanics," and "Magnitude & Miracles." Our clubs perform so many wonderful community projects and services, and I'm
anxious for everyone in our Rotary families in Kentucky
to know about them - thus cometh the
"hard copy" newspaper I'm calling the "Mid-Year Chronicle." I've asked all our
Club Presidents to have their Club PR person send to George Skellie, our
District Marketing Chairperson, a short article
along with pictures showing some of the neat things our clubs are doing in the
community. If
your club has not already submitted something, I ask as a reminder that you do so during
this month of September so that we may
get the information to the printer. Remember - "The Future Of Rotary Is In
Your Hands" ChuckCharles E.

September is New Generations Month
We've all heard it said that today's youth and young adults are the future, the next generation, a new generation. This is true for Rotary as well. Today's youth and young adults are tomorrow's community and business leaders, parents, and Rotarians. That's why we underscore the importance of of Rotary involvement in shaping the lives of youth and young adults with September as New Generations Month.
The Rotary Manual of Procedure says, "It is the responsibility of each Rotarian to prepare the New Generations - all young people up to the age of 30 - by improving their life skills to ensure a better future, while recognizing the diversity of their needs. All clubs and districts are encouraged to undertake projects that support the fundamental needs of the New Generations: health, human values, education, and self-development."
In District 6710 we support youth and young adults through programs such as Rotaract for our young professionals and college students, Interact, RYLA, and the Speech Contest for our high school students, District and local scholarships, and the many, many projects of individual clubs.
How does your club support youth and young adults? How can you highlight New Generations Month? Check out some of the resources below.

Time to Submit District Simplified Grants
Deadline is October 16, 2009
Now's
the time for Rotary Clubs to seek out worthwhile projects for which District
Simplified Grant (DSG) funds can be sought.
The deadline for submitting DSG applications is Friday October 16, 2009.
Check out these links for more information about DSG Terms & Conditions, District 6710 Application,
and DSG Help and Hints.
How large
are DSG awards? While the past is no
guarantee of future award sizes, recent grant amounts have generally ranged
from several hundred to a couple thousand dollars. In general, Rotary Club contributions have
provided about half of typical project costs, i.e., local Rotary Clubs
(individually or in combination with another organization) tend to contribute roughly
half of a project cost. Sometimes,
project costs have been shared three ways, between a Rotary Club, another second
qualifying entity, and the DSG. The
total 2009-10 allocation for District #6710 is $14,000. Funds are limited, so
submit your application soon.
The Fine Print: All applications must be on an official District 6710 Application form and received by District Grants Committee Chair, Dennis J. Dolan, not
later than Friday October 16th, 2009. The completed DSG application and all
supporting documentation should be sent- preferably by email to: rotarydennis6710@bellsouth.net (Please
make reference to "DSG Application" in the email subject line.) If sent by
regular mail, address to: Dennis J.
Dolan, DSG Application, 2400 Chadford Way, Louisville, KY 40222.

Interact Updates
Now that
the 2009-2010 school year has gotten off the ground, Interact Clubs are also taking off with high hopes for the culture of service
which Interact forms. For the newly forming clubs at Trigg County High
School (sponsoring club: Cadiz) and Russellville
(sponsoring
club: Russellville) it means taking off for the first time. For the rest of us, it means
taking off again.
Did you know that RI is sponsoring an Interact Video Contest? Find out more and download Interact resources for clubs and advisors at the RI website.

Membership Corner
Rotary's Membership and Extension Month has come to a close
but it is always the perfect time to share your passion for Rotary. The August Membership Minute Email (RI's Membership Newsletter) arrived
recently with some very good suggestions. You probably know some business
associates or family members who would make great Rotarians, but you never
considered them as Rotarians because they don't live near you. Take the time
this month to call them, tell them why you think they'd make great Rotarians,
and submit membership referrals online. The prospective members' contact
information will be sent to district leaders in their geographic area, and then
forwarded to individual clubs.
You don't need to wait for the training session to get
started on improving your ability to recruit new members. You can go to Rotary Basics Online. You might want to start with
Club Assessment Tools or How to Propose A New Member. I look
forward to meeting many of you at one of the upcoming
training sessions.
Roland R. Blahnik
Chairperson,
District Membership Committee

The

Rotary Day at the UN 2009: November 7, 2009
Bill Miller, PDG from Frankfort, KY and RI Alternate Representative to the UN, would like to invite you to the 2009 Rotary Day at the UN. Rotary and the United Nations have a long history of working together and sharing similar visions for a more peaceful world.
Each
year at Rotary UN Day, more than 1600 Rotarians including many Rotary
International Directors, Foundation Trustees, past Senior Leaders, and guests
come together at UN Headquarters in New
York. The
program is designed to inspire and educate all participants as well as provide
insight into the relationship between Rotary and the United Nations. In the past, the day has been very successful
and has sold out.

Rotarians Never Stop!
Rotarians never stop! Past President of the Rotary Club of
Louisville, Wayne Perkey (2004-2005), has a new passion - Early Childhood
Education.
Perkey, the Louisville Club's Rotarian of the Year in 2002,
is speaking on behalf of "Strong Start Kentucky", an initiative of the Prichard
Committee for Academic Excellence and its partners, who hope to convince the
next session of the legislature to increase funding for quality early childhood
education and care.
Perkey says it is choice of 'pay me now or pay me
later!' For every dollar invested in
pre-k we will see a return of between $2 and $16, according to 40 years of
study by organizations such the Federal Reserve Bank.
Perkey has spoken to several Rotary Clubs across Kentucky, and is eager
to speak to Rotarians. Perkey says, "Rotarians are the leaders of their
communities, and make things happen. I
want to enlist their enthusiasm."
You may contact Wayne at 502-426-9093, or

First Rotaract Leadership Training S eminar is a Success
We all know how valuable
leadership training can be to the success of a club, from PETS to Rotary
Leadership Institutes, to the Zone Institute.
However, a sometimes overlooked group is our Rotaractors. While the Manual of Procedure tells us that
each district should provide training for its Rotaract leadership, it is
oftentimes much more easily said than done.
To help fill this Rotaract
training void, District 6710 Rotaractors and Rotarians banded together to plan
their first "Rotaract Leadership Training Seminar" (RLTS) which took place
August 1-2 in Louisville, KY on the campus of Bellarmine University. In order to maximize the benefit, they opened
up the seminar to anyone willing to make the drive to Louisville. Spearheaded by PDG Dave Weller and Rotaractor
Mary Kathryn DeLodder, the event ended up with nearly 40 Rotarians,
Rotaractors, and Rotaract advisors from 5 states and 6 districts representing
both young professional/community as well as collegiate clubs. The diversity of clubs present added to the
richness of the experience and allowed the participants to learn and garner new
and innovative ideas from each other.
The participants found that other clubs face the same challenges.
The day and a half seminar
included workshops and presentations from both Rotaractors and Rotarians on
topics such as Rotaract and Rotary 101, The Rotary Foundation, Rotaract officer
duties, leadership characteristics, public relations, membership, finances, and
much more. It was an intensive yet
thorough agenda.
With the success of the first
RLTS, District 6710 hopes to make this into an annual event and continue to
invite other districts to join in the effort.
