A Note From the Governor

Greetings! DG Chuck Cicchella

This past month I began the Governors annual visits to our local clubs - it's great to see the vitality and dedication shown by so many Rotarians.

I'm particularly enjoying meeting with new Rotarians in the board meetings just prior to or after the full club visit. As I talk with them it's important to note that they all appear to have high expectations for their Rotary involvement and that they are eager to become involved in their community.

The key here is that we not let them down - we need to move quickly to give them "their shot," so to speak, at becoming involved and not leave them "on the bench" just because they are "rookies."

I'm asking each of us to ask ourselves two basic questions: (1) What motivated you to join when you first became a Rotarian?  (2) Would you join your club today, if given the opportunity?

As we soul search these answers I believe we'll find that even though one may be a veteran Rotarian, our wishes and expectations of Rotary do not differ to greatly than that of our newest members.

"The Future of Rotary Is In Your Hands."

August is Membership and Extension Month: Reach One, Keep One

The RI Board of Directors adopted a new membership slogan, "Each Rotarian: Reach One, Keep One," at its June meeting.

The slogan emphasizes the need for Rotarians to focus on both recruitment and retention in their membership growth efforts.

"Membership development is each Rotarian's responsibility," said Paul Netzel, a member of RI's Membership Development and Retention Committee and a past RI director.

"'Reach One' reminds us that because Rotary membership is by invitation, it's essential that each Rotarian reaches out and invites someone to join," added Netzel, a member of the Rotary Club of Los Angeles.

"'Keep One' reminds us that it's not sufficient to simply sponsor someone into Rotary; we must also see that new members become active and involved Rotarians. We know this is an essential element in membership retention."

Register for the Rotary Leadership Institute
RLI Logo

Has your club encouraged anyone to participate in the upcoming Rotary Leadership Institute?  Anyone can attend, but RLI is especially helpful for those Rotarians who appear to have the potential for Club Leadership. Clubs are encouraged to sponsor attendees who are in line for leadership, potential future leaders, new members, or even not-so-new members.  Everyone can learn something.

The next RLI sessions in our area will be August 22 in Lexington and November 14 in Metropolis, IL.

District Strategic Plan: Take Our Survey
As our district continues to strive for excellence, we continue to implement activities that help us meet the goals of our strategic plan.  To make sure that our plan stays current and applicable, periodic reviews are conducted.  To aide in this, we are conducting a survey of  Rotarians in our District.  Please take a moment to answer these 14 questions.  The more responses we get, the more useful the results will be.

Please Note: Constant Contact has been experiencing some technical issues with surveys lately and they are working on the issue.  If you are not immediately able to take the survey, please try again later.

UN LogoRotary Day at the UN 2009:
November 7, 2009

Bill Miller, PDG from Frankfort, KY and RI Alternate Representative to the UN, would like to invite you to the 2009 Rotary Day at the UN.  Rotary and the United Nations have a long history of working together and sharing similar visions for a more peaceful world.

Each year at Rotary UN Day, more than 1600 Rotarians including many Rotary International Directors, Foundation Trustees, past Senior Leaders, and guests come together at UN Headquarters in New York.  The program is designed to inspire and educate all participants as well as provide insight into the relationship between Rotary and the United Nations.  In the past, the day has been very successful and has sold out.

Speakers will include the Secretary General of the United Nations, the President of Rotary International, John Kenny from Scotland, the Chairman of the Rotary Foundation, Glen Estes PRIP from USA, and the President-elect of Rotary International, Ray Klingensmith from USA.  There will also be panel discussions on Health, Water, Hunger and Literacy.
