Greetings!

Some exciting holidays are coming soon: Purim on Adar 14 (Thursday, March 8), and Passover on Nisan 14 (Friday, April 6).

From the colorful holiday of Purim, when Queen Esther and Mordechai exemplified personal strength and bravery that saved our people in Persia, to Passover, when an entire Israelite nation moved from slavery to freedom under the leadership of the Moses -- we celebrate our persistence as a people, our miraculous partnership with G-d, and the delight of sharing heritage and happiness with family.

Warmest good wishes to you all for health and joy in the coming days.

B'Shalom,

Rabbi Leslie and Eleanor

Be Happy, It's Adar

A Teaching Moment from Rabbi Leslie Alexander

 Be Happy!

The Sages of the Talmud taught that in the month of Adar, when the holiday of Purim is celebrated, one should experience the happiness of the holiday all the way through the month.

Happiness can be defined in a lot of ways. Sometimes, both adults and children have mistaken what happiness is meant to be. Sometimes, happiness has been represented by what "goodies" we can acquire, sometimes we mistake the quest for personal pleasure as happiness, sometimes we think that being free of responsibility would be the quintessential definition of happiness.

While there is nothing wrong with the above concepts in moderation, the holiday of Purim and the month of Adar contribute a different idea of happiness.

Esther and Mordecai, who fought back against the prejudice and the evil of Haman and his followers, saved their people and reestablished peace and stability in their society. From that came great celebrating and immeasurable happiness.

The happiness of the month of Adar emerges from personal strength and dignity, is created by the care and concern of people for their neighbors, and is solidified through positive action and dedication to something greater than just the fulfillment of desire.

The lesson of "Be Happy, Its Adar" is a wonderful lesson to teach our children. Now is the time that we can begin to convey the feeling of pure joy that comes when we do something nice for someone else, when we appreciate the things we have, when we take the time to really smell sweet smells and taste yummy food, and see the beauty all around us.

So, this Purim, create some real happiness for your children, yourself, your extended family and community. Bake Hamantashen together and savor them, go to hear a Megillah reading and appreciate the joy of being in the midst of community celebrating with noise and music, deliver several Shelach Manot (goodie) baskets filled with those hamentashen, fruits, hand made cards and good wishes to friends. (For ideas on how to celebrate Purim and for explanations of the holiday see the resource links in this E news.)

Teach the lesson of appreciation this Adar. It's fun, it's real, it's meaningful and it makes for happiness.

For a wonderful essay on happiness, read Dennis Prager's
column called "Happiness is a Moral Obligation."

Be Happy, It's A New PJ Library Book!

 Noah Katz

Noah Katz recently received his very first PJ Library book in an envelope addressed specifically to him. Look how happy that makes him! If you have a photo of your child enjoying a PJ Library book, do send it along, perhaps with a sentence or two about the reasons for your child's delight with the PJ Library Program. We'd like to share your pleasure!

Knitzvah a Mitzvah  with Jewish Family Services

What a lovely intergenerational event with Jewish Family Services' lively "Knitzvah" volunteers! These women get together to knit and chat, creating blankets, hats, sweaters, and other delights for babies and homebound elderly. They shared their skills with our PJL boys and girls, who created lovely gifts for needy children, as well as a memento for themselves.

Celebrating "The Birthday of the Trees" with Our City Forest

We had a fabulous experience with "Our City Forest," the nonprofit organization which plants trees all over San Jose. This event was part of our celebrations for the month of Shevat, during which we celebrate "Tu B'Shevat," the Birthday of the Trees, so we went to a Nursery where trees are "born."

We learned about trees and sang "Leaves, Branches, Trunks and Roots" (to the tune of "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes), met "Treena," the group's mascot, and repotted trees which will some day be planted around San Jose like the 160,000 other trees Our City Forest has planted since its beginnings.

OCF Tree Planting

Warmest appreciation to four terrific Steering Committee Volunteers -- Joan Abrams, Robin Feinman-Marino, Nancy Goldsmith, and Pnina Rothenberg. They were lively, engaging, creative, and helpful. Todah Rabah, ladies!

In her carseat on the way home, Sofie, Robin's daughter, announced, "You always have a friend in a tree!"
