| Greetings! | |
When days are gray and cold, folks generally like to stay home, and "cocoon" with family. At this time when we feel the strength and warmth of family, we can still encourage ourselves to look beyond our own homes to think about others. We can bring others, at least symbolically, into our own "family circle" by doing mitzvot, fulfilling responsibilities of loving kindness.
We have lots of holidays for observing Jewish traditions, history, and family life cycles. Doing mitzvot should happen all year round -- and while an obligation, can also make us feel good by helping others. Many of our PJ Library books, including some of those coming to your mailbox this month, share the importance and delight of doing mitzvot for others.
Our upcoming events will be focusing on helping others and healing the world. We will be donating handmade gifts to families in need, and will be anticipating the coming of spring by considering the pleasure as well as the obligation of keeping our community strong.
We look forward to joining with you in doing outreach and creating a wider circle of "neighbors".
Warmest good wishes for a healthy, happy, and rewarding 2012.
B'Shalom, Rabbi Leslie and Eleanor |

Warm Fuzzies in February: Knitzvah a Mitzvah!
Tuesday, January 31, 2012 - 3:45pm to 4:45pm
In Collaboration with Jewish Family Services
Levy Family Campus - 14855 Oka Road, Los Gatos
PJ Library participants have a chance to learn about a wonderful volunteer group sponsored by Jewish Family Services: Knitzvah, which provides knitted projects to help newborns, children and seniors.
This project is designed for children 4 to 7 years old (siblings welcome, of course). Each child will make two yarn crafts, one to take home and one to donate to Knitzvah to be given to children in our community. There will, of course, be our usual story time, songs, and snack.
It's an opportunity to have fun and do a good deed at the same time. Please also consider bringing a new or gently used child's backpack to donate to a Children's Center. Thank you.
RSVP to www.jvalley.org/pjlibrary by January 26.

Tu B'Shvat: An Ecology Holiday
The wider community is beginning to discover the Tu B'shvat holiday, Judaism's new year of the trees, existent since post biblical times. We will partner with Our City Forest to create a hands-on tree planting and nature experience geared toward our young PJ Library participants. Our City Forest is actively reaching out to Jewish organizations because they realize how exceptional it is for a community to have a holiday dedicated to the thing they love and value so much -- the tree! We will publicize the event date very soon!
South County PJ Library children and parents, we're planning a very exciting way to commemorate Tu B'shvat, our spring ecological holiday. Recology, a local waste removal company will bring a garbage truck for children to be able to learn about how trash collection and recycling work. Though this program will occur in the Morgan Hill area, all PJ Library families will be notified and are encouraged to attend.
Stay tuned for details. |

Presenting tables with a variety of craft activities and holiday taste treats were representatives from The Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley, which provides the PJ Library Program, Congregation Beth David, Congregation Sinai, Temple Emanu-El, Yavneh Day Schyool, South Peninsula Hebrew Day School, The Addison Penzak Jewish Community Center, Sharone Hadassah, Alef Bet Judaica, Pars Kosher Market, and Jerusalem Grill and Bar. The on-stage part of the program was emceed by The Retro Dome, featuring the delightful Shannon Miner Guggenheim. Community Rabbis, San Jose City Council members and organization leaders helped light the tall wooden hannukiah and sang holiday songs.
All images of the event were recorded by our outstanding, creative and warm local photographer Kamran Zohoori (Picture 2000). To reach Kamran for your own family or event photography
