| Greetings! | |
PJ Library makes the summer last!
August is a time to enjoy the hot and happy days of summer. We've got: a Pool Party to cool you off, a morning at Santana Row's Mommy and Me for enjoying Park Valencia and other families with young children; a special morning with grandparents in our community; and the last two sessions of our enjoyable "Summertime Shabbat" with Rabbi Yoshi Fenton.
Take advantage of these opportunities to make the good times last, creating memories to recall when the sun isn't shining.
We're so happy to be sharing fun times with you this season! We look forward to welcoming you at our events.
B'Shalom . . .

| "Summer" in Hebrew |
Let's learn some new words for summer fun. . .
A Teaching Moment from Rabbi Alexander
Yeladim, are you having kef on your chofesh enjoying the chof hayam?
Huh?
Here are some Hebrew words for summer experiences. Try them out on your friends. And whatever ways in which you are enjoying summer, take a PJ Library book along for a special sharing moment.
Have fun in the sun in August!

| Last Two Summertime Shabbat Sessions! | |
Friday, August 6, 2010 and
Friday, August 13, 2010
Lobby of the APJCC
We've been enjoying weekly informal get-togethers in the lobby of the Levy Family campus this summer, as
Rabbi Joshua Fenton, director of the Center for Jewish Life and Learning at the Addison-Penzak JCC, leads a mini-Shabbat celebration for preschoolers. A volunteer from the PJ Library Steering committee reads a book or two from The PJ Library® Program, and the event concludes with candle-lighting and challah-eating.
No need to register in advance; just stop by with your little one, join the circle, and smile!
|
| Join us at "Mommy and Me" at Santana Row | |
Tuesday, August 10, 2010, 10:00am
If you're planning to go to Santana Row, Tuesday, August 10th at 10 am to enjoy their "Mommy and Me" program, please stop by our table and say hello.
We'll be doing outreach to the general community to see if we can discover any new families to whom we can introduce our wonderful PJ Library® program.
Held at Park Valencia, the program will also feature a visiting fire truck to climb upon!
Hope to see you there.
|
| PJ Library Poolside at the JCC |
Wednesday, August 18, 2010
3:00-4:30pm
We'll be having a PJ Library Pool Party in August on the Addison-Penzak JCC Campus. Kids will splash, parents can chat, and a good time will be had by all.
We'll be joining with "Shalom Baby" families from the past five years.
Come along for some fun in the sun. Snacks will be available, and if you want to listen to a story, we can do that, too!
Thanks to the JCC for hosting this enjoyable opportunity.

| Sharing Summer with Grandma and Grandpa |
Sunday, August 29, 2010 - 10 am to 12 noon
Chai House, 214 St. Elizabeth Drive, San Jose
The PJ Library® program will visit Chai House to bring grandparents and grandchildren together to share favorite memories of summertime, and to enjoy doing craft activities with each other.
What happy memories of summers gone by are the same today? What were the most enjoyable experiences you might have shared with your grandparents? Join us and discover the special pleasure of transmitting these memories and experiences between generations.
If your little ones have grandparents in the area, please bring them with you to this delightful event. And, even if you don't have grandparents in the area, it's an equally good reason to bring your kids to Chai House to meet some grandparents who miss their own grandchildren who might not live close by.
Our thanks to Doris Katz, Aurianne Dorsay, and Dorothy Dorsay for creating this special opportunity for intergenerational connection.
Hope to see you there!

| Animals of the Bible at the MLK, Jr. Library in San Jose |
A Unique Exhibition by Artist Tamar Assaf
Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, 150 E. San Fernando St., San Jose August 1 through August 31
On the heels of our very successful "Summer Safari" at Temple Emanu-El recently, another opportunity to look at animals from the Torah is happening in our community.
Camels, ostriches, owls, antelopes, snakes, locust, crocodiles, spiders, and ants, are all part of a unique exhibition exploring the roles that animals played in the stories of the Torah. Tamar Assaf's work will be on display at the Library during August. The exhibit is free.

| Help us welcome our newest "readers"! | |
Do you know anyone in our Jewish community who is ready to welcome a new baby? We would like to make sure that, when their baby arrives, they receive the gift of a "Shalom Baby" bag, sponsored by Women's Philanthropy of the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley.
Shalom Baby bags include a handmade blanket, created by the Knitzvah Program of Jewish Family Services Silicon Valley, a "Build-a-Bear" stuffed animal, a beautiful Shabbat blessing for the new child, and a photo album, as well as several other gifts. Also included is useful information about the resources of our local Jewish community.
The Shalom Baby bag is hand-delivered either to the hospital or to the home by volunteers.
Please call Arielle Hendel at (408) 357-7501 with information about the new baby and family so that we can arrange a Shalom Baby visit.
