Re: BP/DEEP HORIZON GULF OF MEXICO OIL SPILL ASSISTANCE INFORMATION
As you are aware on April 20 there occurred an explosion and oil spill on the British Petroleum Oil Drill Platform Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. The extent of the environmental damage is not yet known, but in anticipation of damage occurring to the coastal areas and the potential for extensive economic damages concerning the diving industry, the information below may be of assistance. Be aware that DEMA has contacted the Governors of Florida, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi requesting federal assistance specifically for diving related businesses being impacted by the misperceptions and misinformation being disseminated in the media and for longer-term assistance due to the actual impact of the oil spill. We request that you keep us informed of any issues that arise which could be helpful to the diving community in these impacted areas. As DEMA learns more and can provide additional information, we will do so.
