Note From Sonya

Dear ,

This week, after 10+ years of employment, I gave notice to leave my job. It's been something I've thought about and visualized for a few years now.

While I thought I would feel a huge sigh of relief, or a burst of excitement or a rush of freedom, I felt none of those things.

Instead, I felt like it was just the next logical step, something I needed to do. A prudent transition into my next expression.

Sometimes that major leap into the future that we've been looking for doesn't happen all at once. Sometimes it starts with  small incremental change until one day we arrive at the place we've been waiting for.

This week's memo: On The Next Logical Step

Memo of the Week

"All serious daring starts from within"  ~ Eudora Welty

Our desires always create motion. They cannot NOT create motion. We are energetic beings. Thought becomes form.

Think about it. Anything that you see created - inventions, products, business ideas, buildings - existed in someone's mind before it became a tangible reality. We are powerful beings. When we have a desire that we emit, out loud or in silence, that energetic begins to take form.

So, the first thing I want to say about wanting to create change, of any kind, is that it is possible. Not only that it is possible, but that it can happen in an easy, graceful, logical manner.

But first we have to be where we are. And make the mental preparations.

Abraham-Hicks says that the best stance or attitude for creating is "Happy with what is, and eager for more."

I think one of the reasons things don't happen more quickly for a lot of us, is that instead of talking about what we want in our lives, we talk about what we don't want -  how we don't like our jobs, our relationships, our bodies or our current realities.

And this is good information to know, because from this, we can get clear about what we do want.

But what we think about expands, so we have to be careful.

In other words, we get more of what we think about.

If you are wanting to make change in your life - leave your job, get into a relationship, have a different experience - while the outcome may be out of your control, there are steps you can take to pave the way.

They are simple adjustments, really.

Instead of looking at what you want to move away from, look at what you want to move towards.

For those people who want to quit their jobs, have you defined what you would rather be doing? Do you know what a typical day would look like in the life of your desired future? Have you decided what kind of income you would need to sustain your creative life?

In other words, how much thought have you put into what you want, over what you don't want?

Act as if it's on it's way to you.

You don't have to know when it's going to happen or how it's going to happen, but you don't have to wait for "it" to happen in order to assume the position. When I was employed, I always had another side income going. I was always honing my entrepreneurial skills. Whether it was teaching yoga or selling artwork or writing ezines or producing teleseminars, or creating and manufacturing my yoga bags, I was always asserting myself in some form, as an entrepreneur.

Life doesn't begin "when. . ." It is happening now. So, utilize your time directing your energy toward the life you want to be living. It may not have entirely taken form yet, but you can sculpt, and shape, and ponder it now. It will take shape soon enough.

Trust in your own timing and follow the next logical step.

I don't believe in throwing caution to the wind and making radical changes before we are ready. And the reason I don't believe in this has to do with "Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. At the very bottom of the pyramid is our need for survival and comfort and when these two areas are challenged or compromised, we have a very hard time being creative problem solvers because we are in survival mode.

More, I believe in creating the kinds of structures that will support our transition and establish our relationship with our new identity. If you want to be an entrepreneur, begin while you are employed. Start soliciting your services, maybe garner your first client. If you want to be an author, sign up for a writing class. Immerse yourself in your own words. If you want to take off for 6 months and back-pack across Europe, create a budget, see how much you would need to live on.

There is always something we can put into place now, to begin moving toward our dream life.

What begins to happen when we immerse ourselves in our new identity is that new life begins to take form. Pretty soon we not only have one client, but now a referred client, or more than just an essay, we now have a whole body of work. Or we find once we focused on saving for the trip to Europe, we are able to leave sooner than we thought.

In other words, while we are creating change toward our said desires, those said desires begin to take on a life of their own.

And yet, we were just following the next logical step.

When I started working at my job over 10 years ago, my schedule was 4 days a week. And then I went to three days a week. And then I moved a little further away and because of the commute went down to two days a week. And then due to financial constraints at the company and scheduling, I became an independent contractor, no longer employed by the company but still responsible for the work. Until what had me occupied my extra 3 days a week took precedence and I could no longer do both.

When the new life we are living begins to out picture the old life we are shedding, leaving the old is the next logical step.

That's how change happens.

And we want it to happen gradually. Otherwise we wouldn't be able to recognize ourselves. To go from structure to no structure, or regular income to irregular income, or employee to self-employed, takes some getting used to.

Even though I may have talked about wanting to leave my job 5 years ago, I can look at myself now, and look at myself 5 years ago and know that now is a better time.

I wouldn't have thought that, then. But it wasn't the next logical step, then.

Which is how we can trust the timing of our life.

Take Inspired Action.

I don't believe in taking action for the sake of action. But I do believe in taking inspired action, which means to act that when we are inspired to act.

Last week I was talking to my brother in law who was telling me about this amazing business opportunity he just got himself into. Everything had been lined up for him - existing clients, location, renovations made, lease to buy options, etc - and all he had to do was walk into it. He was telling me how it was the weirdest thing. He was negotiating different terms with the man and something inspired him to throw out an outrageous offer to buy the business outright. With no fanfare, his offer was excepted and within a relatively short period of time, the paperwork was taken care of.

He told me, "I don't know what made me do it, but I knew I would be crazy not to, and I had nothing to lose".

When I talked to my sister she told me that he was always telling her "I don't know what it is, but it's coming. I don't know what it is, but it's going to be big. I don't know what it is, but I'll know it when it gets here."

This is what he's been saying for years. And then it came upon him. And he knew. And he acted.

But more than that. He knew TO act. It was an inspired action based on everything he had been waiting for.

We are always on the precipice of change. But we don't need to wait for the change to occur before we get ready for it. We can get ready for it now in expectation of its arrival.

Sometimes we forget that we take dominion over our lives. And even though we may still be an "employee" or "single" or "unemployed" or any such condition that we are identifying with, we have to also remember that we are Creators, first and foremost, and that life is creative. That just by the fact that thought becomes form, we have more power than we think.

I've always kept a journal and a few years ago, I wrote about the way my life would occur from the moment I woke up until the moment I went to bed. I wasn't living any of it at the time, but I knew the feeling of it. My income would be project based, so that I would have time off in between for creative endeavors.  I would have multiple collaborations. I would be writing on a regular basis. My income would be plenty. I would live in a beautiful area. I would be walking distance to shops and restaurants. I would have an accountant and a business adviser, a writing group and a walking partner. My days would be filled with multiple exchanges with different people and my creative expression would be rich.

Acting on the inspiration that came to me over the years, without realizing it, I've compiled a life not far from what I put down on paper.

But at the time, I never knew how it would happen. Or when. And you don't have to either.

The point is to lean into your life. Lean toward what you are wanting. Don't be at the "effect" of any condition in your life, but instead, let the condition inspire you toward articulating something new.

And then step into it.

It doesn't have to be momentous, or life changing, or risky. It doesn't have to be something you talk about with others. A matter of fact, I encourage you to let it be your own private missive.

It doesn't even have to be big.

It just needs to be the next logical step.

Sooner than you realize you will arrive at the place you've been waiting for.

And then, there will be something else.
