Dear ,
Last weekend, I experienced more variety in a 24 hour period than I had experienced in a long time. Being open minded and saying yes can take you in a lot of different directions, have you ever noticed? And is that such a bad thing?
When was the last time you said yes to trying something new and different? And what did you learn? Anything?
Today's memo: On trying something new.

It
started with the doctor that traveled from India.
In producing The Wellness Revolution Summit, I've had the pleasure of checking out a number of different speakers. We
were looking for someone renowned in Ayurveda and found Dr. Naram, a leading
expert in pulse readings, Siddha Veda and the ancient texts, who also happened to be the pulse reader for the Dalai Lama and the late Mother Teresa.
It turned out he
was going to be appearing in Northern California
as part of his US Tour. I scheduled an appointment to meet him and have my pulse read
and drove the 2 hours to meet him on a Saturday night. I
appear at the hotel without any expectations but an open curiosity. I am one of
2 Caucasians in a room full of extended families of Indian descent. This is
their doctor. They are bringing their children and parents to see him. These
are Dr. Naram's patients. Running
an hour behind, I finally get in for my meeting. He is a small man in a white
suit and I want to hug him. He is adorable. We talk a bit about his speaking
engagement with the Summit
and then he settles down to read my pulse. In less than a minute, 30 seconds
really, holding onto my wrist, he tells me every thing that is operating less
than perfect in my body, down to which joints are hurting, pointing to them, and
why. He
is incredible. I now know why there is a wait to see him. After 5 hours and
some time with his staff going over herbal remedies (and the wait), I get home
at 1am for some sleep.
My
next outing, only 9 hours later is a totally different venue. This is not
how I would normally spend my Sunday morning, but my neighbor tells me the day before, that
he has two free tickets to Nascar, do I want to go? I've
never been to a Nascar Race, never really felt compelled. But there is a track
in Sonoma County and the tickets are free. What
the hell? I love a new adventure. So on a Sunday afternoon, I find myself in a
crowd full of people watching souped up cars traveling north of 130 miles per
hour. I
actually enjoy myself. I learn a little about racing from my neighbor, get a
good dose of people watching, and after a $9.00 lemonade, get the whole
experience of what big business Nascar really is. There is a lot of money being
made at these races. What
I find surprising though, is how well organized the event is and how subdued the people
in the stands. I would have thought it would be a more rowdy crowd but it's the all American family, a father's day outing - American flags, cameras, hot dogs and beer. My
neighbor was kind enough not to make me stay for the whole race. After 50 laps
around the same track, how much more can you watch, really? The only thing
people are waiting for (they don't admit it) is the big crash
around the bend at one of these corners. After we left we found out there were a few spin outs
and hoods flying off cars, crowd going wild, etc. so I missed the excitement. But
I had to get back for the final outing of my 24 hour adventure which is my massage at
Hotel Healdsburg, a different vibe altogether and a good way to end my day.
Hotel Healdsburg is a boutique hotel in the heart of Healdsburg which is around
30 miles north of Santa Rosa
and in the heart of the wine country. A friend of mine who knows I love the
area got me a gift certificate at the hotel. And even though it is not enough
to cover the $350 - $500 night stay, it does afford me enough to get a hot
stone, reflexology, combination massage. Which
I thoroughly enjoy. And
this concludes my 24 hours which began at the same time the day before heading out to see Dr. Naram. So, what is the dang point of this memo, anyway? This
memo is about opening yourself up to something new and stepping out of
your comfort
zone to try a new experience.
It
doesn't matter what it is. If
there is something you've wanted to try and no one is willing to go with
you,
would it be so bad if you went alone?
The
point is, the only thing we have control over in this world is ourselves, our
decisions and how we implement them. In other words, how we choose to live our
lives. And
many people make very safe choices in their day to day lives because maybe up
until now fear or insecurity or discomfort has been allowed to dominate. What
I am saying is, why wait for your life to change? Why wait for anything to change? Why not change it yourself,
now? If you are content with your life, then pay no attention.
But if you are on the fence, bored or afraid, maybe it's time to try on
something new. Consider an alternative. Take up a new hobby. Check out your options. Why?
Because only you can. And
why not?
A subscriber sent me this saying he found on a greeting card. It says:
"Ever notice how 'what the hell' is always the right decision?" What
the hell. Live a little.
