Education is not filling a pail but the lighting of a fire.
~William Butler Yeats The past few weeks you've read about Family Communications, Fred Rogers' legacy organization devoted to spreading Mr. Rogers' messages. Family Communications will present three sessions at APPLES for Children's 9th Annual Early Childhood Professional Day on Saturday, September 25th.
Liz Kelley, Director of MSDE's Office of Child Care, will also join us at the conference to share information about MSDE's Quality Rating Improvement System, or QRIS. You may have been hearing about the QRIS and have questions about what it means to you. QRIS programs are currently operating in at least 18 states. QRIS is a voluntary system that encourages child care programs to continually improve their services to children and families. A committee of Maryland early childhood leaders have worked together since 2008 to learn about QRIS programs in other states and draft a plan for Maryland. It will replace the current Tiered Reimbursement system, and will include the Credential for individual child care providers. The plan is expected to be piloted in Spring of 2011. For the new few weeks, we will share information you need to know about this plan. What do you want to know? Let us know at help@applesforchildren.org.
