Greetings!
Happy Wednesday.
School's out! It's time for summer fun for you, your children, and especially your school-agers. The recent edition of the Office of Child Care's Partners newsletter reminds us about summer safety. Be sure to check out the important information and resources.
In this edition of the I-Care e-newsletter, we'll share more summer fun ideas. We hope you have already put together those outdoor backpacks we described last week. If not, re-use your school-ager's backpacks - they won't be needing them for awhile!

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time.
~John Lubbock

When you think about your own childhood summers, what do you remember? Was it catching lightening bugs? Swimming in the neighborhood pool? Running through the sprinkler?
This summer, plan for memories that your children will remember as adults. Create new traditions or maintain old ones that are associated with the uniqueness of summer. Some possible ideas include:
- Read a chapter book every day under a shade tree. Invite the children to lay on a blanket and close their eyes as you read the words.
- Start a small garden in the ground or in a container. Water it daily and watch it grow.
- Make homemade popsicles right after breakfast using a purchased form or Dixie cups and posicle sticks filled with juice, or yogurt. Let them freeze for a refreshing daily afternoon treat.
- Have lunch (or breakfast or snack) outside on a regular basis. You can use a picnic table or a blanket on the ground for a "picnic."
- Help children appreciate summer's beauty. Point out flowers, insects and the sounds of summer, such as a neighbor mowing the lawn. Take pictures (or have children draw pictures) of what they see and create a Summer Scrapbook.
Remember to share your traditions with your families so that they can extend them if they wish. Share them with us too at help@applesforchildren.org. |
