Tip of the Week
Ask your older school-age children to help you plan summer activities. Invite them to think about what they remember most about summer fun. Make a list and give them responsibilities for leading some of the activities.

Help
Greetings!

Happy Wednesday.

June 21st may be the official beginning of summer, but in many ways summer begins much sooner. As the school year ends, you may be participating in graduations from preschool, elementary, middle or high school; welcoming school-agers into your program; or modifying your daily schedule for a slower summer pace.

We thought this would be a good opportunity to share some summer fun ideas and resources. How do you welcome summer in your program? Let us know at help@applesforchildren.org

Summer is the time when one sheds one's tensions with one's clothes, and the right kind of day is jeweled balm for the battered spirit.  A few of those days and you can become drunk with the belief that all's right with the world.

It's a beautiful summer day. The sky is deep blue, the birds are singing, and the smell of honeysuckle fills the air. What are you doing inside?

Virtually everything you and your children do inside you can do outside (with the possible exception of diapering and toileting). Take your daily activities outside by stuffing several backpacks with various supplies:

  • books and puppets
  • paper and crayons
  • paper, paints and paintbrushes
  • Legos or other building blocks
  • block people, cars and trucks
  • play food and dishes
  • magnifying glasses and containers for examining bugs

Keep the backpacks light enough for your oldest children to carry outside. Then create "centers" by positioning each backpack in a different area of your outdoor space. Be sure to have cool water, sunscreen and some shade available, and you are ready to take advantage of the summer weather - and play the day away!
