| Tip of the Week |
We all handle change differently. When you are involved in making the changes, ask the people involved what would make the change more manageable for them. Would more time help? A group with whom they can process their thoughts? Sometimes, just hearing others' approaches to managing change can give us a different perspective that may be more helpful in navigating the change cycle. |

Greetings!
Happy Wednesday.
Does it seem like every time you turn around there is another change to which you need to adjust? Your children are starting kindergarten, or middle school, or high school, or college, and you want them to stay just the way they are. Your spouse wants to move, or stay, or buy a new car and you want the opposite. Why is change so difficult at times? We know we must change to grow, but sometimes, it seems that the amount of change is overwhelming.
Beginning this week, we'll explore change with the goal of helping us better understand how to manage the many changes in our lives. How do you cope with change? Let us know at help@applesforchildren.org |

"Since changes are going on anyway, the great thing is to learn enough about them so that we will be able to lay hold of them and turn them in the direction of our desires. Conditions and events are neither to be fled from nor passively acquiesced in; they are to be utilized and directed."
~ John Dewey
We all know change is constant and is necessary for growth. Still, it is sometimes difficult to see the "opportunities" in changes, especially when they are unexpected.
Charlie Griffin describes how we experience change as a change cycle, which forces us to:
- Generally enter into the phases of anger, resistence, shock, denial, resentment, frustration, and trying to forestall or avoid undesirable change.
- Eventually realize that change may be unavoidable, so we start to "look over the chasm" by bargaining, negotiating, learning what we can and cannot control and where we may have any influence in the outcome.
- Explore our options and accept that change will occur and decide to work with it. We begin to work effectively toward planning and defining the future, with problem-solving, goal-setting, new engergy, strength and leadership.
When you are confronted with unexpected changes, recognize that accepting change is a process. Give yourself time to experience the cycle of change.
