HAPPY BIRTHDAY

OLD TOM MORRIS
(June 16, 1821 - May 24, 1908)
189 years ago today Thomas Mitchell Morris, Sr., otherwise known as Old
Old Tom Morris and son Tommy (ca. 1870-1875)
morris
Tom Morris, was born in St Andrews, Fife, Scotland.

Old Tom Morris is rightly called the father of modern golf and his status is legendary. Not only did he win 4 Open Championships himself; he fathered a son who was the Tiger Woods of the day, winning 4 straight Open Championships; he popularized the game; he was one of the first true golf course designers; a great trainer of others including Donald Ross; and was an innovator of equipment design.

The great man's career was centered around St. Andrews of which he was 'Custodian of the Links' for much of his life.

morris bookAs a tribute on his 87th birthday, W.W. Tulloch, a resident at St. Andrews and golfing partner of Old Tom, presented his finished book "The Life of Tom Morris: With Glimpses of St Andrews and its Golfing Celebrities" to the old man after he had gone out for his daily two holes on the Old Course - up the 1st and back on the 18th.

The inscription (included in the Classics of Golf reprint) from the original 1908 version states:

"Dear Old Tom,

Will you accept for your 87th birthday this account of your long and honourable life, and the many great matches in which you have taken part and been interested?  I trust it may recall to you many happy days and many memorable triumphs in a game with which your name and that of your distinguished son will always be associated.

It will also, I hope, help to preserve to new generations of golfers the charm of your personality and the memory of the 'brave days of old'."

                                           With all good wishes,
                                                 ever yours,
                                                         W.W. TULLOCH"

As Robert S. Macdonald points out in his Foreword, W.W. Tulloch's work is, as nearly all biographies were in those days, a flattering portrait of a great man, meant to be flattering.

Just as Old Tom is an important figure in golf's history, this book is part of golf's literary history and gives first person insight to life at St Andrews during this influential period.
