"Golf in Florida
 (1886-1950)"

Florida's "Golden Age" from 1886 to 1950 was marked by the popularity and access for America's newly defined middle-class to enjoy the game of golf.

In 1930, Florida had over 230 golf courses.  72 of these "Golden Age" courses remain today -- 37 are private and 35 are resort/public courses.  Since 1940, another 1,200 courses have followed suit as a result of these early trailblazers.

Richard Moorhead and Nick Wynne's book "Golf Incol gillespie Florida (1886-1950)" is about the men who pioneered golf course design in Florida, such as Col. John Hamilton Gillespie (pictured to the right), the Scottish immigrant who designed the first golf courses in Sarasota, Belleair, Tampa, Kissimmee, Winter Haven, and even Havana, Cuba.

Using more than 2,000 historical photographs and entertaining stories, "Golf In Florida" also tells the story about how personalities, such as Britain's Harry Vardon along with Americans like Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones, Johnny Farrell, Ky Laffoon, Patty Berg and others, popularized golf in Florida by playing the courses, promoting real estate deals and bringing droves of people to the Sunshine State to enjoy the game.
