Baby Bottle Fundraiser - May 8-22, 2012

Last week, our Middle School students completed a week-long class on chastity provided by two Pregnancy Center East (PCE) educators and a guest speaker. For many years now, PCE has come to our school to assist our families in this wonderful work and they do it at no cost to our school.
As a way of showing our appreciation and support of their work, I am inviting all families to contribute change to the Baby Bottle drive called the "Change" a Life program. Whatever we raise will be given to Pregnancy Center East to go towards their efforts to help pregnant women and their families and to promote the virtue of chastity among teens. This fund raiser will be from May 8 to May 22, 2012. Please return all bottles (filled or not) to your child's teacher by Tuesday, May 22.

Please read the letter that will accompany the baby bottle from PCE for further details. I thank you in advance for your generosity. God bless, Annette Lustenberger, Middle School Catechist

Neighborhood Flowers/Thank You, Jane Babbit - Koenig

This week our students are delivering Easter/Mother Day flowers to our neighbors in the neighborhood. Many thanks to Jane Babbit - Koenig for coordinating our annual Neighborhood Flowers service project. This is a project that is appropriate to students of all ages, and one that brings great pleasure to our neighbors. By class, our students go out into the neighborhood and deliver a potted flower with a "Happy Easter/Happy Mother's Day" message.

It is always striking how many thank you notes we receive from neighborhood residents. In today's culture, such a simple gesture of friendship is rare among strangers. This annual tradition truly brings the warmth and joy of Christ out from our school to the world!

Jane organizes this project so that our students can pot the flowers in lovely decorative containers. She also donates the supplies! Thank you, Koenig family, for your energy and generosity!

Office News

Staffing: After-School Care Position

GSCM is hiring an after-school care provider for the 2012-13 school year. This person joins Mary Ann Ziemer as a member of our two-person after-care staff to run the after-school care program. Hours are 2:45 p.m. until the last child is picked up, which is no later than 6:00 p.m. To apply, contact Dan Teller, dteller@gscmontessori.org.

Phys Ed Classes

Due to the rain (and the sidewalks being flooded) the students will not be running the mile and half mile this week.  Instead, they will be (weather permitting) running it next week.  Your child should always wear gym shoes (or have them available to change into) for days when he/she has Phys Ed.   Mrs. Bushman, our Phys Ed teacher, asks that you please make sure that your children wear the appropriate shoes on the day that they have Phys Ed.

Last Meeting of the Year

Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, May 15, 9:15 a.m. for the PTO Business Meeting.  This will be our wrap up for the school year.

Spirit Wear Next Year

This is the last year for QAMS spirit wear, including QAMS Falconwear. Next school year, only GSCM spirit wear will conform with the Friday dress code. Consider donating your old QAMS attire to Matthew 25: Ministries. Place donations in the box marked Matthew 25 at the entrance of the school.

Order Your Yearbook
Don't wait until the last minute to order your 2011-12 GSCM yearbook.  The GSCM PTO and Yearbook Club will be taking PREORDERS ONLY for this year's book.  No extra books will be ordered and resold.  Yearbooks cost $25 for one, $44 for two and $60 for three.  Make check payable to GSCM PTO.  Yearbooks will be delivered to students in the fall of the following school year.  Non returning families may pick up their books in the fall or pay to have the yearbooks mailed. Enrichment Opportunities

We are continuing to develop after-school enrichment and extra-curricular activities for our students.

Destination ImagiNation: Coordinator Needed

We are planning to bring back our Destination ImagiNation (DI) program next year, and are seeking a person to serve as DI Coordinator (stipend provided).

DI was a very popular activity at our school several years ago. For those unfamiliar with it, here is a description taken from the Destination ImagiNation website:

Destination ImagiNation (DI) is an educational program in which student teams solve open-ended challenges and present their solutions at Tournaments. Teams are tested to think on their feet, work together and devise original solutions that satisfy the requirements of the Challenges. Participants gain more than just basic knowledge and skills-they learn to unleash their imaginations and take unique approaches to problem solving.

Destination ImagiNation is a program that builds participants' creativity, teamwork and problem solving in enjoyable and meaningful ways. The goals of Destination ImagiNation are for participants to:

  • Foster creative and critical thinking.
  • Learn and apply creative problem solving tools and method.
  • Develop teamwork, collaboration and leadership skills.
  • Nurture research and inquiry skills, involving both creative exploration and attention to detail.
  • Apply and enhance written and verbal communication and presentation skills (both impromptu and sustained).
  • Promote the recognition, use and development of many and varied strengths and talents.
  • Encourage competence in, enthusiasm for and commitment to real-life problem solving.

We plan to offer mixed-age DI teams for students in K/1, 2/3, 4/5 and 6/7/8. We are seeking a DI Coordinator to oversee the program. The DI Coordinator position will have a paid stipend. This person will arrange for coaches, coordinate schedules, order materials, and otherwise plan and implement the school-wide program. Please see Dan Teller if interested in this position.

Drama

Next year Rhonda Hamall, who helped guide our production of the Wizard of Oz, will offer an after-school drama program for students in grades 1-8. There will be two productions, one for younger and one for older children. In addition, Rhonda will offer a 30-minute weekly drama class to our kindergarten students. We are pleased to continue to develop the drama program at our school.

Choir

Barb Blasch, our upper elementary and middle school music teacher, will continue to direct the GSCM Children's Choir. This group will continue to meet after school next year.

Sports

Dan Teller has been working with a corp group of parents to further develop athletic opportunities for our students in the following sports: soccer, basketball, volleyball, and track. Please see below for information on girls' basketball. Fall soccer information will be coming out before the end of school.

Girls Basketball (Fall, 2012)

Grades 3 - 8 of all skills level are invited to come out and play. If interested, please contact

Bridget_Kaufman@yahoo.com. We are also looking for a parent volunteer for a few positions- as a coach, asst coach, or as a CYO basketball coordinator (no coaching required) for our school.
