Thank you for my mom and dad and my sister and my brother and the whole world. Thank you for Jesus dying on the cross for my sins. And thank you for Jesus coming down for us so we could have a good time. Thank you for the whole atrium and the people who made the school. We hope you bless them. Thank you for bringing our friends. Bless the priest and the altar at church. Thank you for the birds, the cardinals and for the flowers.

OAC Fine Arts Residency: April 30-May 18

GSCM welcomes visual artist Debbie Brod from April 30-May 18 in a three-week arts residency through the Ohio Arts Council's Artist in Education Program.   Debbie will work with our students in the media of 3-D sculpture and also fabric art. The residency will include personal student work as well as a permanent installation in our east stairwell.

Family Art Night: Wednesday, May 9, 7:00 p.m.

Parents, students, siblings, and friends are all invited for a night of creativity with resident OAC artist Debbie Brod. Wear messy clothes and come prepared to create using paint, plaster, and other media. You will have a chance to see the progress of our students' work in our residency, and will actively participate in creating art that will be part of our large installation. All are invited for a fun night of creativity and fellowship!

Help with installation:

For the installation in our entryway/stairway, we need the following:

  • Scaffolding
  • Hammer drill
  • Manpower: a dad to help Debbie with the installation on May 16 or 17 (you set the time!)

Please contact Dan Teller (dteller@gscmontessori.org) if you can help in any way.

Supplies Needed:

            NEWSPAPERS

OLD CARPETS (for use in the residency studio)

Meet Debbie Brod and the OAC Artist in Residence Program

One of the many ways GSCM creates unique learning experiences for our students is through our partnership with Ohio Arts Council (OAC) and the artist in residence program.  GSCM students have studied, music, dance, architecture, poetry, drama and sculpture through this amazing program.  They have created lasting treasures such as original poetry, a CD of original and much loved Atrium music, clay representations of room designs and the sculpture in the west stairwell, as well as put on an original drama and hosted a square dance party to celebrate the knowledge they gained through these residencies.

Beginning on April 30 we will host visual artist Debbie Brod in a three-week residency. Debbie worked with our students in 2005 to create the beautiful 3-D sculpture hanging in the west stairwell of the school.  During this residency, Debbie will work with students to create a 3-D sculpture that will include fabric art.  This piece will be installed in the east (front) stairwell.

Debbie believes that each residency is like a journey and enjoys empowering the students to expand their knowledge of what art is and what each person can do, artistically.  She especially enjoys combining painting with the physicality of three-dimensional media.  She said in her OAC bio, "I like tapping into what is meaningful to people, and offering them materials and techniques with which to express themselves.  Often, all our efforts are combined in a permanent installation to which everyone has contributed, expressing each person's particular energy and yet coherently combining all."  Debbie will be working with all K-8 students though she will have a core group of students from the middle school.

Debbie Brod has a BA in French and Fine Art from Oberlin College, the Sorbonne (Paris, France), and the University of Cincinnati.  She has an MFA in painting from the University of Cincinnati.  Her artwork has been exhibited regionally and nationally.  She has been an adjunct instructor at colleges and universities in the Cincinnati area, and is a member of the Art Academy of Cincinnati's Community Education faculty. We are so glad she will be with us for the next three weeks!

Kroger Rewards Program

Starting May 1, the Kroger Reward program is changing. Parents will enroll their Kroger Plus Card in the Community Rewards Program, indicate GSCM as the charitable organization of choice, and then every time that family's Plus Card is used at a Kroger store, GSCM will receive a percentage of every purchase.

We urge all GSCM families who shop at Kroger to enroll, and to ask extended family and friends to enroll and list GSCM as your donor organization.   We utilize these funds for Staff Development and Financial Aid.

To enroll, go to krogercommunityrewards.com and proceed as follows:

  • If a member does not yet have a Kroger Plus card, please let them know that they are available at the customer service desk at any Kroger.

Office News

Attendance Notification

Please note the following policies from our school handbook. We are tightening our application of these policies, for the safety of our students.

  • Parents must notify the school office by 8:00 a.m. if a child will be absent.
  • If a student arrives after 8:20, the parent must escort the child into the building and sign in at the school office.

Please be sure to contact the office directly (not your child's teacher) when your child will be absent or late. You can call and leave a message, write an email by 8:00 a.m. to ntoon@gscmontessori.org, or call us by phone between 7:45 and 8:00 a.m.

Please note: The Berwick St. doors are not available for parent use for morning drop-off. Parents must enter and leave the building using the upper doors by the office. This is to ensure that the lower doors remain locked at all times for security.

Phys Ed Classes Next Week

Your child should always wear gym shoes (or have them available to change into) for days when he/she has Phys Ed.  Next week in Phys Ed class students will be running the mile and the half mile.  Mrs. Bushman, our Phys Ed teacher, asks that you please make sure that your children wear the appropriate shoes on the day that they have Phys Ed.

Confirmation Announcement

Congratulations to Sara Friemoth who was confirmed this past Sunday April 29 at St. Gertrude Parish in Madeira. Please say a prayer for Sara, that our Lord will continue to shower her with the gifts of the Spirit.

Last Week's IPM Collection

Good Shepherd families contributed 45 helper meals last week for Inter Parish Ministry's food choice pantry. Thank you very much for your contributions.

The next collection, the final one of the school year, will be Thursday, May 24th. Please mark it on your calendars.

Thank you Dr. Sodergren

The PTO thanks GSCM parent and clinical psychologist Dr. Andrew Sodergren for speaking last Thursday on the topic of Secure Attachment. If you missed the talk, check out an interview with Dr. Sodergren posted on The Good Shepherd Catholic Montessori Facebook page. Spirit Wear Next Year

This is the last year for QAMS spirit wear, including QAMS Falconwear. Next school year, only GSCM spirit wear will conform with the Friday dress code. Consider donating your old QAMS attire to Matthew 25: Ministries. Place donations in the box marked Matthew 25 at the entrance of the school.

Fun GSCM photos are needed!

The 2011-12 GSCM yearbook committee is in need of cool photos of your kids at school or school events! We particularly need some photos from recent events (the school play, classroom field trips, etc.) AND we really need some photos from the pre-K classrooms. If you have some digital photos you would like to share, contact Mary Rieke, mrieke@gscmontessori.org.

ATTENTION MIDDLE SCHOOLERS!

The yearbook committee is looking for students to assist in creating the yearbook! If you love photographs, writing, and/or computers, we could use your help! Mrs. Rieke will be working with some students after school on some Wednesdays. Please let her know if you are interested in helping out:

mrieke@gscmontessori.org.
