| U of M Twin Cities Science Teaching and Student Services Center earns LEED Gold |
The University of Minnesota's Science Teaching and Student Services Center achieved the first LEED Gold Certification on the Twin Cities campus. The building utilized regional materials, a natural air convection system, low-flow fixtures, and a high-efficiency irrigation system. The exterior glass utilized a custom-designed white dot pattern and strategically-placed columns to maximize views of the Mississippi River and downtown, minimize glare, and reduce solar heat gain by 50 percent. Additionally, 94 percent of construction debris was diverted for reuse or recycling. Signage and a tour map were added to raise awareness about sustainability features. Take the online sustainability tour. Read more about this showcase project.

Pilot project continues with measurable success
Xcel Energy's VAR pilot project works to intelligently monitor and control electricity system losses at a distribution level through the use of capacitor banks in the field. By using 2-way communications and an intelligent centralized software, system losses are minimized on the distribution system.
The project's installation will wrap up in June with 220 capacitor RTUs (Remote Terminal Units) in the EIC and surrounding area. Throughout the project engineers have reviewed data that shows energy savings are exceeding projections target. Forecasted annual energy savings are more than three million kWh and 1855 tons of carbon.
This project is already reducing customers' energy bills by reducing fuel and energy purchases needed to meet customer demand. For the average person trying to figure out what this all means - well, it's like checking and properly inflating the tires on a car. And because of the measurable success of this pilot project here in the EIC, there are already plans in the works to utilize this technology throughout Xcel Energy's Upper Midwest system. Bulb Blasters, an iPhone app with a mission
Bulb Blasters is part of an Xcel Energy campaign to increase awareness about the energy efficiency benefits of compact florescent lights (CFLs) and encourage consumers to install them in their homes. Players fire a CFL bulb cannon to blast energy-wasting incandescent light bulbs out of the sky. As players progress to more difficult levels, they receive an efficiency message about saving energy, money and the universe. They also can post their scores and challenge friends. Bulb Blasters is free and can be downloaded at bulbblasters.com and the Apple store.

Save money and energy | |

Water heater replacement saves energy and money
After home heating, hot water is the second largest user of energy in the home - accounting for 15 percent of total energy use. Replacing a water heater when upgrading a heating system or before it leaks will save time and money. With CenterPoint Energy's Water Heater rebates, CenterPoint Energy residential natural gas customers in Minnesota can receive a rebate up to $100 when a qualifying natural gas storage tank water heater is installed. Get more details and complete rebate requirements.
Water Heater Rebates for Minnesota are more comprehensive than ever!
A new natural gas water heater can help you save energy and money. Water heating in the home is typically the second largest energy consumer after heating and cooling. Xcel Energy's 2011 water heater rebate program is designed to help offset your initial costs, and an efficient unit can offer savings throughout the life of the equipment. Xcel Energy offers five tiers of rebates, including tankless water heaters. Please read the full program details.
