Lighting goes lite on energy use

Taken during the retrofit - you can really see the difference!

RiverCentre
The Saint Paul RiverCentre parking ramp recently went on an energy diet...um, rather... a lifestyle change. By replacing more than 900 fixtures with more energy efficient ones, it has reduced energy use by a whopping 47 percent - representing an annual savings of $60,000!

The whole project cost about $126,000 and with an annual savings of $60,000 - it seems like a no brainer payoff-wise. And, what's even sweeter - thanks to funding from a U. S. Department of Energy grant (about $44,000) and rebates from Xcel Energy (about another $73,000), the RiverCentre had to fund less than $9,000 of the project costs. And, if saving energy and money wasn't enough reason - It also gives the RiverCentre a leg up on the competition

as part of its plan to become a leader in green meetings.

What's next? The incredible success of this project has lead the City of Saint Paul to set its sights on another six to eight ramp lighting projects. Saving money, saving energy, creating jobs - what's not to like? You can also read the BOMA Saint Paul story included in this e-newsletter for details about an upcoming event!

Getting the Grey Out of Green

BOMA Launches Kilowatt Crackdown Challenge

MPLS BOMA Ck

In partnership with Xcel Energy, BOMA Greater Minneapolis and Saint Paul BOMA are implementing a new energy conservation initiative patterned after a successful program developed by BOMA Seattle and Portland. The initiative challenges members in the commercial office real estate community to reduce energy, save costs and position their buildings for the future.

BOMA and Xcel Energy will provide participants with free assistance by helping benchmark buildings through the ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager tool and by helping locate stimulus funding and utility rebates to help offset the cost of improvements.

Top performers will be awarded in the Spring of 2012. Awards are based on three categories: highest performing buildings, most improved performance and most valuable tenant. To register or find out more please visit:

Community Energy Services Available in Prospect Park!

CEE hand full

Learn how to reduce your energy use and save money! The City of Minneapolis has partnered with the Center for Energy and Environment, CenterPoint Energy and Xcel Energy to offer Minneapolis homeowners Community Energy Services (CES), a full service residential energy program.

More than 50 homeowners in the Prospect Park neighborhood have already participated in the program including Pauline and Dick Hendrickson who "were very impressed with the CES program, the expertise of the home visit crew was excellent and the recommendations received were very helpful. CES provided a recommended contractor list for the air sealing and insulation work, which was very re-assuring and made it much easier. We would highly recommend them and the CES program to anyone!"

CES provides: FREE Energy workshops, home energy visits that qualified professionals perform diagnostic tests, including a blower door, and install materials which may include: low flow showerheads, setback thermostat, compact fluorescent light bulbs and more; access to financing, incentives, and rebates for homeowners completing larger projects such as insulation or a furnace replacement. Check out Community Energy Services or call 612-219-7334.

Growing green - J&J's Trillion BTU success

State Sen. Anderson, Sen. Franken, Sen. Klobuchar, Councilman Carter, J&J CEO Hannigan, Saint Paul Mayor Coleman

J&J event

Several dignitaries (see photo to the left) helped J&J Distribution usher in a new era of energy conservation and green growing. J&J is a distributor of fresh produce with a huge 100,000-square-foot facility. Since they're dealing with that much space filled with highly perishable fruits and vegetables - the climate control systems better be good.

But right now, it's an energy hog. As the first loan recipient of the Saint Paul Port Authority's (SPPA) Trillion BTU program they'll be replacing 44 roof-top units with more powerful and energy efficient ones. J&J is perfect example how energy efficiency investments payoff for the business, environment and community.

SPPA's Trillion BTU Energy Efficiency Improvement program is available to any Minnesota Xcel Energy business customer. The program provides loans to businesses for energy conservation projects. To learn more about program details and eligibility requirements check out SPPA.

Electric cars are the wave of the EIC future

iMiEV

Transportation electrification -- it doesn't really roll off the tongue, but it is rolling into more conversations by policy makers and business leaders these days. And recently nearly 20 such leaders took the opportunity to experience first hand the Mitsubishi i MiEV.

There's growing interest in building green fleets, with a good dose of apprehension about electric vehicles (EV) and infrastructure that really work. The i MiEV is a zero-emissions, affordable vehicle that has surprisingly strong acceleration, which has shattered some people's perception of an EV.

The State is in the midst of an RFP process to make EVs and charging stations a reality. And the EIC partners are working with them because EVs are a good clean personal transportation option.

The i MiEV and charging stations were also featured at the Minnesota State Fair as part of the Green Streets exhibit. The i MiEV was sponsored by Mitshibishi, the Minnesota Pollution Contol Agency and Xcel Energy.

Thanks for your continued interest and support of the Energy Innovation Corridor - Minnesota's showcase area - making energy-efficiency, renewable energy, smart technologies and transportation a reality.

Sincerely,

The Energy Innovation Corridor Communications Team
About
Energy Innovation Corridor

Located within one of the most unique urban communities in the country, the Energy Innovation Corridor was formed to create a sustainable energy and transportation showcase. The first-of-its-kind, this clean energy and transportation model extends along the 11-mile Central Corridor light rail transit project route, from downtown Saint Paul to Target Field in downtown Minneapolis, along Washington and University avenues, via the Minnesota State Capitol and entire University of Minnesota-Minneapolis campus.

District Energy St. Paul garners top award

Anders Rydaker accepts award
DE award
The International District Energy Association (IDEA) presented its System of the Year Award to District Energy St. Paul. The annual System of the Year Award is the top honor IDEA can bestow on a public or privately owned district energy system. The award recognizes exemplary system performance and service furthering the goals of the district energy industry. The panel based the selection on numerous company achievements.

District energy systems are an efficient, environmentally responsible method of heating and cooling buildings. These systems produce steam, hot water or chilled water at a central plant and the steam or water is then piped underground to individual buildings within a designated area for heating, cooling or use in industrial processes. Thermal Renewable Energy and Efficiency Act

According to the International District Energy Association, Thermal Renewable Energy and Efficiency Act (TREEA), HR 5805, would offer incentives to increase the use of district energy and combined heat and power systems to heat and cool buildings throughout the country. The bill was introduced by Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) and Rep. Betty McCollum (D-MN).

Changes proposed via TREEA will expand the ability of this program to support larger, more efficient district energy and CHP systems; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; create jobs; increase grid reliability; and enhance energy security.
