 School Oral Health Screening Program

The Montana AHEC/Office of Rural Health with the Gallatin County Dental Alliance initiated the school oral health screening program in 2001 when 116 elementary children in 5 schools were screened in Gallatin County. This year, 3,577 children from 31 schools in three counties (Gallatin, Park, Madison) were screened. Screening results were as follows: 2,930 (82%) of children had no dental needs, 559 (15%) had early dental needs and 51 (1.4%) had urgent dental needs. Also, 255 Healthy Montana Kids dental insurance applications were distributed to families who requested this information via the parent consent forms for screening.

School screenings can only take place with a large volunteer corps. This year, 177 volunteer positions were filled by area dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, MSU students, and parents. Coordination with the school secretaries, nurses, and teachers was also essential to effectively screen 3,577 children. The 2012 screening program was a tremendous success because of great volunteers and concerned and caring school personnel.

The objectives for the school screening program have remained the same since 2001:

   - Identify children with urgent dental needs

   - Refer children with urgent needs into dental

     treatment

   - Provide oral health care education

   - Promote oral health care careers

Although the objectives are clear, the challenges of ensuring children receive follow-up care still exists. The goals for 2013 are to increase the number of children who receive follow-up care, and expand the school screening program statewide.

Breanna and Mikayla submitted their winning PSA entitled "Healthy Living," which outlines the behaviors and actions of young adults in their communities and the choices they can make regarding healthy lifestyles.

The objective of this contest was to encourage students to look at public health careers as careers of interest by working with local, county health departments to identify and expose the student's interest in healthcare careers, helping to minimize the impending healthcare professions shortage.   Citizen Soldier Conference in Great Falls

The North Central and Western MT AHEC offices teamed up to provide a "Citizen Soldier- The Invisible Wounds of War" conference in Great Falls, on March 9, 2012 at Benefis Health Systems. Over a hundred and fifty healthcare professionals from across the state took part in the one-day workshop. While most of the participants were able to attend the conference on-site, nearly forty more attended via distance education sites, throughout the North Central region. The conference also held exhibitors, in which the conference participants could interact and learn from those experienced in delivering care to rural veterans. The speakers were largely representative of the North Central region, but others were also included from across the country, who each gave outstanding presentations and were on hand to be able to lend their expertise to all conference goers. This conference was interdisciplinary, offering continuing education credits for all healthcare professionals, and 6 contact hours of CME was approved for attending physicians and nurses. The topics of main interest included: veteran specific issues and care; Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Military Sexual Trauma (MST) and the impact on individuals and their families.

Certified Outpatient Coding Class

WMT-AHEC partnered with Missoula's Lifelong Learning Center to bring their Outpatient Medical Coding course to rural Montanans through distance-learning technology in a course that began in January. This course was led by Lisa Ray Roper, MHA, and reviewed the cardiovascular thoracic coding take-home test. With the help of Vidyo technology and UM IT assistant Austin Smith, students from as far away as Big Timber, Browning, and Choteau were able to participate. Class concluded March 24th.

Coordinating Rural Behavioral Health Primary Care Collaborative

The problem: Many masters prepared social workers and post-doc psychology graduates at The University of Montana have a desire to practice in rural areas. However, because of the lack of licensed mental health practitioners in most of Montana's frontier counties, there is little opportunity for these graduates to receive the supervision hours required to obtain their licenses; a classic catch-22.  Further, critical access hospitals with rural health clinics would like to develop the Patient Centered Medical Home model, but have great difficulty recruiting behavioral health professionals.

The solution: Western Montana AHEC and UM faculty in Social Work and Psychology developed a distance supervision process, in order to place a pre-licensed social worker and post-doc psychological resident with St. John's Lutheran Hospital, in Libby, MT. These professionals are hired as permanent employees. The Libby team has been in place since September 2011 and already has a waiting list. WMT-AHEC is currently recruiting two candidates to work at Madison Valley Medical Center in Ennis, MT.

 Family Medicine Accreditation Visit Complete

The Family Medicine Residency of Western Montana Accreditation visit took place on February 16, and we await notification in late May. In the meantime, Dr. Ned Vasquez is making preparations to communicate with prospective students this summer for fall interviews. A PR firm has been hired, and interviews are being conducted for a Program Coordinator. The faculty is busy developing curriculum for the first class scheduled for July, 2013.
