Lands and Recreation Crew

It's 5:00 am on Saturday morning. While most of us are looking forward to a couple more hours of sleep, the Lands and Recreation Crew are pulling on their hip waders and getting ready to collect bugs.

Crew members collect and transport beetles to Grant PUD shoreline areas as part of the vegetation management program. These beetles assist in the control of purple loosestrife; an aquatic weed that grows along the shorelines of the Columbia River and other area waterways.

Assisting with the Grant PUD's vegetation management is just one of the crew's many duties. They are here to help. If you see Lands & Recreation Crew members or other Grant PUD staff while you are out enjoying Grant County's sunshine, please stop by and say 'hello.' They're on the Project Friday through Monday during the recreation season.

Wanapum Dam Overlook

The Wanapum Dam Overlook, a small day use site, showcases one of Grant County's most prized gems: Wanapum Dam.

Originally built in the late 1950s, this site offers bird's eye views of the powerful Wanaum Dam and the surrounding desert landscape, including Sentinel Gap.

Renovations to this area will be complete in August and include new interpretive signage that shows how lava flows and mega floods shaped the area.

Make plans to visit the Wanapum Dam Overlook this fall to see the improvements.

Reduce Your Impact with Xeriscape Landscaping

'Xeriscape' is a method of landscaping that requires less water and lower maintenance than traditional methods. If you're considering making a switch to reduce your impact, these tips may help:

  • Research and purchase plants that will thrive in your sunny, shady and/or sloped areas.
  • Improve your soil by adding compost. Start your own compost pile or bin and recycle your yard waste.
  • Re-think lawn: Turf requires a lot of water and maintenance. Try Fescue or buffalograss as a low-water alternative, or shrink your turf footprint.
  • Water smarter and set sprinklers on a timer. Make sure the spray only waters your plants, not the sidewalk.
  • Add mulch to help plants conserve moisture, control weeds and add visual contrast to the plants.

Sounds good, doesn't it? More information
