Missouri House of Representatives

Attention: Pastors, Clergy, Pastoral Administrators

On Sept. 12, the Missouri General Assembly will vote on whether to override Gov. Nixon's veto of SB 749. This legislation ensures that no one is forced to pay for abortions, contraceptives or sterilizations in their health plan when this violates their religious or moral beliefs. Overriding the governor's veto will mean that SB 749 becomes new state law.

An override of the governor's veto is doable, but it will require a strong outpouring of support from Missouri citizens. State representatives and senators need to know that most Missourians want SB 749 to be enacted as state law. Your parish can play a critical role in this effort.

MCC PRE-COMPOSED MESSAGE

The MCC has developed a quick and easy way for Catholics to contact their state representative and senator. People don't even have to know who their state legislators are. At the MCC website people can send the pre-composed message. They simply put in their own contact information, including their email address, and click "send message." It takes no more than two minutes.

After sending the pre-composed message, the person receives two reply emails. The first confirms the message was sent and gives the name of the state representative and state senator who received the message. The second email reminds the sender to report back to the MCC when they get a response from their legislator.

It is easier to do than to explain. Go do it yourself now at MoCatholic.org. Wouldn't it be great if we could get more Catholics to send this message? Here is how you can help.

WHAT YOUR PARISH CAN DO

Below find two actions your parish can take. All parishes should be able to complete the first action (the pulpit announcement/bulletin insert); parishes with wireless Internet access are asked to take the second action and host a Virtual Veto Override Sunday.

1.  Pulpit Announcement and Bulletin Insert

Every Sunday between now and September 12 please use the pulpit announcement and bulletin insert below.

Pulpit Announcement

On Sept. 12 state lawmakers will consider whether to override Gov. Nixon's veto of SB 749 - the religious liberty bill. This legislation ensures that no one is forced to pay for abortions, contraceptives or sterilizations in their health plans when this violates their religious or moral beliefs. You can send a pre-composed message to your legislators by visiting the Missouri Catholic Conference website at MoCatholic.org.

If you prefer to compose and send your own message, the bulletin provides the contact information for the state representative and state senator that represent the districts in which this parish is located. If you don't think these legislators represent you, contact the Missouri Catholic Conference at (800) 456-1679 for assistance.

2. Sponsor a SB 749 Virtual Veto Override Sunday

If your parish or parish school has wireless access to the Internet, on a weekend no later than August 25-26, sponsor a SB 749 Virtual Veto Override event where parishioners can send the MCC pre-composed message from laptop computers made available after Mass. This event can be held in conjunction with coffee and donuts gatherings or other after-Mass events or at various parish organization meetings during the week. Here is what you need:

  • A space with wireless Internet access;
  • Laptop computers (# based on size on parish);
  • Volunteers to help people send the MCC message.
