Greetings!

May is here and that means calm clear ocean waters, spring dolphin fishing and the Bahamas!  There is definitely a lot more boating activity as compared to the last couple of years.  I flew over Peck's Lake area South of St. Lucie inlet last Saturday and we counted over 300 boats anchored on the reef.  The water is crystal clear. A lot of people are gearing up for or have already left for the Bahamas.
For those of you who are not quite ready for this boating season you may want to take advantage of some good deals and rebates from several manufacturers.  KVH has substantially lowered it's prices on a lot of their TracVision products.  Raymarine, Garmin, and Navico have several different rebate options.  WiFi boosters from Wave WiFi have been very popular and affordable.
Come on in and take a look!

Water & LightningTroubleshooting Techniques

Did you know that over 70% of the marine electronics equipment that are brought in to our shop for repair are in perfect working order. I have seen this same pattern since I started in 1985.
Generally the problem is resulting from a power supply issue on the boat itself. You may read proper DC voltage on your distribution panel, but somewhere in between your panel or battery and your suspect device something is robbing or denying power to your electronics.
With some basic tools you may be able to quickly find the problem and avoid a service call or a trip to the shop. The best tool for the job may be a simple test light which you can purchase or easily make yourself. A test light can actually provide better, more reliable information than a digital voltmeter. Here's why:  A test light uses a lot more current than a digital voltmeter. If you have a bad connection the meter may show full system voltage , but the test light may barely glow or not illuminate at all.  Try it yourself it really works!  If your GPS does not turn on probe the power plug and if the bulb does not illuminate the problem is on the boat.
12 Volt test lights are available at most auto parts stores and are a great addition to your boats tool kit.  A simple way to make a test light is to purchase an anchor light socket with a wired pigtail and choose a 12 or 24 volt bulb as your test light.
