Greetings!
Spring is here I think, although a few nights ago it was in the 50's.
There is some definite activity again on the waterfront. The Ft. Pierce inlet this weekend was as crowded as a 4th of July weekend 3 years ago.
Fishing is also good with several large dolphin and even a blue marlin off of Ft. Pierce caught by Chuck and Heather Foster aboard the "Miss Prissy". Yellowfins are showing up on the corner for those adventurous enough to make the crossing.
Now is the time to gear up! We have seen a definite upswing in boating activity. All of the marine vendors and contractors are quite busy. Now may be the time to gear up or have your vessel serviced. Don't wait until the last minute! Get on someone's schedule now to avoid the last minute disappointment when your mechanic, detailer, electronics tech, fiberglass guy, etc. tells you it will be a month before they can get to you.
Plan ahead if you can.

New Generation of GARMIN is Here!
The new generation GARMIN 6000 and 7000 series multifunction displays are shipping now and we have them in the showroom for a demo. The 15" touchscreen display is spectacular. Garmin has lead the way for the past 4 years with reliable touchscreens. The touchscreens have experienced a near zero failure rate, we have not had one failure. (Keypads Fail! Touchscreens do not!)

Also available and in stock is the new Garmin 700 series.
Big boat features in a 7" superbright touchscreen display. All 700 series units accept Garmin HD radars, and offer full NMEA 2000 connectivity and Xm Satellite Weather and Radio. The 720 and 740 combination units feature an internal 1000 watt depth sounder ( No black box required!).

Come See Simrad's Structure Scan
I had the opportunity to test & evaluate Simrad's new Structure Scan side scan sonar technology in the waters off Palm Beach during the Palm Beach boat show. "A picture is worth a thousand words". The image to the right is an actual screen shot taken on the "Rybovich Reef" in 23' of water in the ICW. If you look closely you can see a 55 gallon drum complete with the 2 rings around the circumference of the drum. Click on the image for a larger view then look in the lower right corner. We have a 5 minute demo loop of our troll around the reef. It is almost like you have a camera trolling with you and displaing a video on your chartplotter.
We have the Simrad NSE systems with the Structure scan demo on display in our showroom. |
| EPIRB SELF TEST
You do the right thing and you have your EPIRB serviced every 5 years. How do you know it will actually work if you need it in an emergency?
I found an interesting company called SAFELIFE.
Specifically they are able to determine and provide the following information:
- Confirmation of whether or not, your beacon would be detected by the satellites used by the International Search and Rescue network
- The encoded beacon information (15 HEX ID, Country Code, Beacon Type and Programmed Identity) for your verification / records.
If you have a GPS Beacon that can perform a GPS Self Test then they can also provide the encoded location transmitted as a part of the Beacon message and an email and/or SMS* acknowledgement that the Self Test message was received.
SafeLife Systems Through Satellite Self Test advantages:
- Confidence that your beacon can transmit a signal that can be picked up by the satellites
- Confidence that your beacon transmits a signal that can be recognized and decoded by the ground stations
- Confidence that the details programmed into your beacon are correct, thus helping to speed up any rescue should one be necessary at some point in the future
- Overall confidence in the complete system from end to end in case of an emergency
- If your Beacon is fitted with a GPS Self Test then confidence that the GPS Receiver is working correctly and that the beacon correctly encodes your location into the transmitted message and that it is received and decoded correctly

Northstar Flat Rate Repair
Attention Northstar fans! It is old news that Navico has purchased the Northstar brand. In their infinite wisdom they have dropped the Northstar brand and are no longer making Northstar products. They are however offering flat rate repairs on Northstar 6000i and 6100i's if and when you have a problem.
Here is how it works: If we cannot repair your Northstar in house we must send it to a freight forwarder in California, and from there it is sent to the Navico repair facility in Mexico. Expect a 4 to 6 week turn around time.
Flat Rate Repair rates:
$799 6" Units
$899 8" Units
$999 10" Units
$1,299 12" Units
$1,599 15" Units
We are all very upset with this new procedure and policy. I recently repaired a 12" 6100i in house and needed a $10 case gasket to complete the repair. Navico considered this gasket an obsolete part and did not have them available for dealers. The gaskets are available in Mexico and are used with the Flat Rate Repair program. I would have to send the unit to Mexico and pay $1,299 for a $10 gasket! |
Palm Beach Show from 400'
 | Palm Beach Boat Show Did you go?
Saturday I flew down the coast from Fort Pierce to Palm Beach and took some aerial photographs of the boat show and some surrounding sights.

Customs Offshore Palm Beach from 200'
 |
This Customs vessel was northbound at 50 Knots off the coast of Palm Beach.
I felt good that we got so close and they did not shoot at us. |
 SHARKS CIRCLING CLOSE To SWIMMERS!
We hovered here for a couple of minutes. The swimmers and snorklers were oblivious to the sharks swimming within ten feet of them. This was just to the north of the Jupiter inlet.
These are not the best photos but the subject matter is good.
