PFCD-NJ OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES!

The Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease (PFCD-NJ) officially launched Tuesday with events keynoted by Richard H. Carmona, M.D., former U.S. Surgeon General and chairperson of the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease. Former Governor Jim Florio and David Knowlton, President and CEO of the NJ Health Care Quality Institute, were named chairs of the PFCD-NJ effort.

PFCD-NJ was rolled out in two press conferences - one in East Brusnwick and the second at Cooper Medical Center in Camden.

To date, over 75 patient assistance groups and organizations have signed on as partners of PFCD-NJ.

In July, Ross DeVol, director of health economics at the Milken Institute, presented the findings of the Milken Study, which details the economic impact of chronic disease - nationally and in NJ.

How Will the Presidential Candidates' Health Care Plans Impact our Industry?
Senior Health Care Aides to Obama and McCain Explain

In July, HINJ co-sponsored a program at the Rutgers Business School featuring David Cutler, PhD., senior health care advisor to Sen. Barrack Obama and Gail Wilensky, PhD., senior health care advisor to Sen. John McCain. The two advisors presented their candidate's  health care plans at the 4th Annual Lerner Center Symposium. The program was moderated by
Susan Dentzer, of PBS' The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.

Here's what they said:

David Cutler:
"I think that any kind of health reform like what Sen. Obama has proposed would actually be very good for the pharmaceutical industry.  And here's the reason why.  The basic fact about preventive care and chronic care management is that people don't get enough of it. Well, an enormous part of the management of that is pharmaceuticals.  And so just to give you a sense how bad it is, roughly one-third of people with high cholesterol have it successfully treated.  And one-third of people with high blood pressure have it successfully treated.  And one-third of people with depression have it successfully treated.  So basically what we're looking at is markets that are at least two-thirds underdeveloped.
And so if you have a medical system that stresses prevention, that stresses care management, that stresses caring for people before they get very sick that has got to be a huge windfall to everyone in that space. I don't worry for a minute that anything in there would be that bad for the pharmaceutical industry."

Susan Dentzer:
"Let's remember the whole point of drug importation is in essence to piggy back on other countries price control regimes or price reduction regimes and lower the price."

Gail Wilensky (responding to Dentzer):
"No it's not.  No, no.  It's to go to a single price.  Anybody who thinks that's the only outcome ought to follow some of what happened when Medicaid best price came into effect.  Some of the prices went down and the lowest prices were driven up."
