Larry Killstrom National CTA Winner
Security Ambassador Recognized For Commitment to Welcoming Visitors
Congratulations to Downtown Security Ambassador Director Larry Killstrom, as he was recently awarded for his exceptional service as the national Certified Tourism Ambassador(CTA) of the Year for 2012! Larry was one of nine finalists out of 8,000 CTAs across the country, and was chosen as CTA of the Year for his dedicated work to make visitors feel safe and welcomed in Downtown Spokane.
Larry, a former U.S. Marine and law enforcement officer, has been leading the Downtown Security Ambassador crew of six since 1996 covering the 80-block Downtown area. On any given day, Larry walks as many as 20 miles to ensure that visitors have a great experience in Downtown Spokane.
Escorting visitors to their destinations. Jumping dead car batteries. Fixing flat tires. Digging cars out of the snow. Finding a lost wallet. Giving directions. Every day, in dozens of ways big and small, the Downtown Security Ambassadors make visitors feel safe and welcomed.
Larry considers customer service his mission. One business owner watched as he picked up a woman's scattered items in the street when her bag broke. "We get calls on security issues," he says, "but the majority of the day is just helping people. The more we help them, the happier they are."
If you or your business is interested in the the CTA program, contact Gina Campbell of Visit Spokane by email or by phone at (509) 744-3340. |

61st National Square Dance Convention
Wednesday - Saturday, June 27-30, an expected 5,500 attendees will be in Spokane for the 61st National Square Dance Convention. While most participants are from Washington, Oregon, California, and Texas, a surprising 600 attendees will come from foreign countries. The estimated economic impact is more than $14 million. Once the dancers dance, they get hungry and have been known to eat local restaurants out of ice cream and pie, among other refreshments.
Wednesday afternoon's ceremony kicked off with Native American dancers on the floating stage right behind the Convention Center. There will be dancing from 10am-10pm on 10 different stages. For those who do not want to dance for 12 hours straight, the event will be hosting education classes regarding square dancing.
Though the event is not open to the public, guest passes are available at the registration desk of the INB Performing Arts Center for $5. If you have any questions about the 61st National Square Dance Convention, please take a look at www.61nsdc.com. |

Hoopfest Weekend is Here!
Hoopfest, the world's largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament is right around around the corner, June 30 - July 1st. With 28,000 players, 225,000 fans and 3,000 volunteers, the streets of Downtown will be buzzing with basketball. This time every year, Hoopfest presents a great economic opportunity for businesses in Downtown. Last year, the community reaped in $38 million dollars directly from Hoopfest weekend.
Though Hoopfest weekend is fun, there are safety concerns with that many people in one area. Therefore, Spokane will increase its police presence Downtown before and during the event. This will ensure that fans and players are safe, and everyone has a grand time.
