March was a Slam Dunk for Spokane!
NCAA bballSpokane was the first city to host all four rounds of the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament, with the 1st and 2nd rounds hosted by Gonzaga University and the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 Regional Championships hosted by WSU at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. Spokane even has its very own NCAA site! Congrats to the Gonzaga Women's Basketball team, who made their first trip to the Elite 8 Championships! Estimated visitor economic impact for these NCAA events was $2-3 million, in addition to the overlapping PNQ Volleyball tournament with an estimated $4.1 million impact--not to mention the national media exposure--making this month "nothing but net" for Spokane!
Promote Peace March This Sunday 
Hands EarthSpokane Mayor Mary Verner  is encouraging citizens to join her at the NAACP's "Demand Justice and Promote Peace March" on Sunday, April 3, starting at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena at 3 p.m.

"The Spokane I know is a loving, accepting place that believes in equality," says Mayor Verner. "As a community, we must continue to visibly stand up against racism and hatred. I am encouraging our citizens to show our support of this event and the critical work of the NAACP."

The event will commemorate the 43rd anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and follows the placement of an explosive device along the route of Spokane's annual Unity March on MLK Day this January. The featured speaker is Benjamin Todd Jealous, president and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The event is sponsored by the NAACP Alaska, Oregon, and Washington State-Area Conference and the Spokane chapter.

BID Ratepayer Advisory Board Opening

Business Improvement District (BID) Ratepayers in good-standing with more than 25,000 square feet of retail space are encouraged to submit a Board nomination application for the open Large Retail seat on the BID Ratepayer Advisory Board for a two-year term beginning May 2011 and ending by February 2013.
