Mythbusting the Primera Way: LED Lighting By: Lindsey Fimek, LC, LEED AP & Deborah Steimel, PE, LC
Alright, we may not have gone as far as the Mythbusters would have to test LED
myths. We did not set anything on fire
or blow anything up. However, we did do our research and have tested LED
products in real applications. The myths
covered in this article include advertised claims and documented studies about
LED lighting products. We intend to
separate the LED lighting fact from myth. We want to back LED products as much as the next person, but first we
need to be skeptics!

It makes sense/cents to LEED certify your existing building By: Lourdes Gonzalez, AIA, LEED AP

The
design and construction of new, flashy buildings containing the latest in
energy efficient and earth-friendly technologies is becoming a sort
of status symbol. These new projects,
aside from being aesthetically new and interesting, generate a lot of press and
allow companies and organizations to proclaim how they are doing their part to
help the environment. This is a helpful
trend, as the more earth-friendly buildings to be constructed the better. However, just building new green buildings is
not really enough. The operation of existing
buildings has an enormous impact on the environment. Buildings consume up to 30% of the all the
energy produced and up to 60% of the electricity used across the globe. The amount of solid waste
created each day in typical office buildings throughout the world also is
growing exponentially every year. To reduce or eliminate these
impacts on the environment we need to look at how we design, construct and
operate our businesses.

ACE Mentor Program to
honor corporate and civic leaders
The ACE Mentor Program is a community service organization near and dear to Primera's
heart. Senior Vice President Ken Panucci
serves as a member of the board and is chairman of the organization's education
committee, while several engineers at Primera are mentors in the program. The value of supporting and guiding future engineers
is undeniable. Primera would like to
invite members of the AEC community to attend the ACE Mentor Program's Fifth
Annual Luncheon to join in congratulating organizations and individuals who
have demonstrated their commitment to Chicago's youth. By attending, you are also showing your
commitment, as proceeds from the luncheon benefit the ACE Mentor Program and
its scholarship fund.
